As she opened her phone and saw the message, her hands trembled a little. "Meet me by 7:00 PM in the corner cafe. There's something you should know about Martinez. —Victor Turner. Lily felt her heart skip a beat. Victor Turner. She recognized Victor Turner's name all too well. He was one of Martinez's former business associates who had mysteriously quit the organization. How could he possibly tell her anything about Martinez? She cast a quick look around the lobby, half expecting to see someone observing her, but everyone was too busy living their own lives to pay attention to her. She took a deep breath, slid out the door, and emerged into Manhattan's crisp evening air, her head buzzing with possibilities. A warm scent of freshly brewed coffee and pastries filled the dimly lit, corner café. Lily saw Victor right away. He was sitting at a lonely table in the rear, his nervous eyes darting over the space. His face was creased with stress and a trace of desperation, making him appear older than she had remembered. He gave her a tight smile and said, "Lily," as she walked up. "Thank you for coming." She replied, "Victor," and sat down across from him. “What's happening? Why did you wish to have a meeting?” Victor bent forward, his voice reduced to a whisper of conspiracy. "It's about Martinez. There's something you need to know, something that's been kept from you—and everyone else." Lily’s heart started to beat faster. "What are you talking about?" Victor looked around once again to make sure nobody was there. "Martinez is not the person you think he is. He has a darker side to him that he prefers to hide. I quit the company because I found something that seemed risky. I now worry about anyone who comes too close to him." Lily's thoughts raced, her past doubts about Martinez coming back to haunt her. "What did you discover?" With a frighteningly serious expression, Victor's eyes met hers. “Illegal activities, associations with dangerous individuals, and matters that could destroy lives if discovered at any point. Martinez would stop at nothing to protect the secrets and falsehoods on which he has built his empire." Lily experienced a chill down her spine. Is that possible to believe? Could such dark secrets also be hidden by the man who had given her a glimmer of compassion and understanding? Victor said, "You need to be careful, Lily," in an urgent tone. Martinez will put you in danger if he believes you know anything. You must determine if you are prepared to take any risks to find out the truth." Lily's mind was a whirlwind of uncertainty, terror, and an odd sense of resolve. She had arrived prepared to quit her work and pursue a new career. That route looked more dangerous and unpredictable now than she could have ever imagined. Her voice hardly audible above a whisper, "I don't know what to do," she said. In a show of support, Victor reached across the table and covered hers with his hand. "Just promise me that you'll be careful. Nobody is trustworthy, and Martinez in particular. Find the truth, but do so carefully." Lily made up her decision and nodded. No matter the cost, she had to know the truth. A spark of determination burned beneath the weight of her decision, which was pressing hard on her shoulders as she left the café. With the lovely glow of the city lights coming through the window, Lily was sitting at her kitchen table back in her tiny apartment. She laid out her notes and papers, trying to put the disparate bits of knowledge she had gathered over the last few months together. It all seemed even more confusing now, Martinez's surprise candor earlier that day. Was Victor trying to deceive her, or was he hiding something evil? Once more, her phone buzzed, and this time, an unknown number had left a message: "You don't realize how far you've gone. Never put your trust in anyone." Lily's heart thumped hard inside her. Her search for the truth became even more pressing as the warning confirmed what Victor had said. Knowing that everyone was watching her and analyzing every action made her feel more and more anxious. Suddenly, she heard someone knock on her door. She became motionless, gasping for air. At this hour, who could it be? She was uncomfortable with the knock's urgency. Silently, she approached the door and peered through the spyhole. A delivery man stood outside with a small item in his hands. She opened the door a little, cautiously but with relief. "Miss Morgan? "the man asked, confirming her identity "Yes," she nervously answered. "This is for you," he said as he gave her the item and hurried off. Curious, Lily shut the door and locked it behind her. When she opened the parcel, there was a tiny, blank envelope inside. There was just one USB drive inside. Questions flew across her mind: Who sent this? What contents might be on it? And why did it arrive in such an enigmatic manner? With shaky fingers, she plugged the USB drive into her laptop. There was just one video file visible on the screen. She inhaled deeply before pressing play. The video showed Martinez talking quietly with a group of men in a poorly lit room, according to the tape. Their communication was evident, even though their faces were hidden. Martinez said, "We can't let this get out," in a firm yet icy tone. "If anyone finds out, it will be the end of us all." Lily felt her blood freeze. Now it seems that Victor was not just being paranoid. She had discovered something dangerous, capable of unraveling what Martinez had built. Her phone buzzed again as the video came to a finish. One more message from the unidentified number: "You now understand. Exercise caution." Lily's entire world was dizzy. She needed to make a decision immediately. But it was obvious that she couldn't put her trust in anyone—not even in Martinez. She was surprised once more by the knock on her door. It was louder and more insistent this time. She was afraid to open it. Rather, she took hold of her bag, packed her notes and the USB drive inside, and crept out of the fire escape. Her heart raced in her chest as she went down the metal stairs. With danger around every turn, she found herself in a race against time. Staying ahead of whosoever was after her and discovering the truth before it was too late was her only chance of survival. The dark figure loomed above her, blocking her path as she approached the alleyway. The moment Lily recognized the form, her breath seized in her throat. “It was Martinez.” He said, "Lily," in a tone that was both worried and irritated at the same time. "We need to talk." Lily stood back, mind racing, caught between fear and an intense need for answers. And then, what would she do? Martinez stepped forward, staring at Lily. With a pleading tone, he replied, "You need to trust me." "I can explain everything." However, Lily was uncertain of whom to believe anymore. Despite the overwhelming evidence against Martinez, she hesitated because of something she saw in his eyes. Is he truly holding such evil secrets?
