Martinez moved in closer, staring at Lily. His voice was begging, "You need to trust me." "I can give you an explanation for everything."
Lily stepped backward, holding tight to her purse. Fear and confusion were racing through her head. Why should I believe you? Everything points to your involvement in something dangerous.
Martinez responded in an agitated tone, "I know how it looks." However, you must trust me when I say that I only have your best interests in mind. The video is taken out of context. There are some certain things you don't understand”.
Lily's look grew strained. “Then give me an explanation. Please explain to me”.
Martinez waved a hand through his hair, obviously frustrated. It's not that easy. This is not just what you saw; there are levels to it. Victor Turner is not the person you think he is. You're being manipulated by him”.
A twinge of doubt stabbed Lily. Martinez might be speaking the truth. Was Victor the master manipulator? She wanted to believe Martinez, but she held back out of fear of being deceived again.
With a trembling voice, she said, "Give me one reason to believe you."
Martinez inhaled deeply. "Because, Lily, I care about you. More than you realize. I would also make sure that nothing bad happened to you.
His words hung in the atmosphere, thick with truth. Lily looked into his eyes for any hint of dishonesty, but she saw none. The need to believe that he was the man she had begun to see beneath the stern veneer made her heart hurt.
They both turned in response to a noise coming from the street before she could reply. With serious and frightening attitudes, two men dressed in dark suits approached. These were the same men Lily had seen observing Victor and her at the café.
Martinez grabbed her arm and growled, "Go." "We should leave this place now."
Martinez led Lily down the alley, and she hesitated for a while before following him. As they dashed through the tight spaces, they could hear the footsteps of those chasing after them. Lily's head was full of questions, but just now she had no time to find the answers. All that was important was their survival.
They came out on a crowded street and blended in with the crowds of people walking. Martinez guided her toward a parked car while maintaining a firm hold on her hand. Before he could even step inside, he almost forced her in through the open door.
"Drive!” he yelled to the driver, a stern-looking man who took off quickly.
While navigating through traffic, Lily's heart raced in her chest. She looked at Martinez, who had his mouth tightly clenched and was staring straight ahead.
She asked, with her voice barely heard above the sound of the roar of the engine motor. "Where are we going?"
Martinez answered, "Somewhere safe," without turning to face her. "Until I can figure out our next move, we need to lay low."
Reluctantly, Lily nodded, her faith in Martinez growing. Now, all she could do was follow him. She needed answers now more than ever because the events of the previous night had gotten out of hand.
The car finally arrived at a remote home on the outskirts of the city after what seemed like a lifetime. Martinez led Lily inside while making sure no one was following them.
With a gesture toward the living room couch, he said, "Sit down." "We need to talk."
Lily sat with strained nerves. Martinez sat down across from her, his demeanor somehow softening.
He said, "I know you have questions." And I'll try my hardest to respond to them. However, you must understand that this is a greater issue than the two of us.
Lily gave a nod, fixing her eyes on his. "Please tell me everything."
Martinez exhaled. "As you are aware, Victor Turner was formerly my business partner. You are unaware, however, that he was engaged in criminal activity, including embezzlement and money laundering. I cut ties with him the moment I learned. He didn't, however, take it well. Since then, he has been planning his revenge.
"What prevented you from calling the police?" Lily questioned, her voice shaking.
Martinez answered, “Because he had dirt on me too." "As a child, I did certain things that I regret doing. He made threats to ruin all I've worked so hard to build and expose me.”
Lily felt her heart sink. The man she had begun to care for had his problems. But could she hold him responsible? Everyone had secrets from their pasts that they hoped to keep hidden.
Martinez went on, "Victor is using you to get to me." He's trying to undermine my credibility and turn you against me. However, Lily, I promise that I will never harm you. That's something you have to believe.
Lily's eyes filled with tears. She was terrified and uncertain, even though she wanted to believe him.
"Why didn't you tell me of this earlier?" She murmured.
Martinez answered in a broken voice, "Because I wanted to protect you." "I believed you would be safe if you knew nothing about it. But I realize now that I was mistaken. You are merely put in greater danger by keeping you in the dark.
Lily wiped her tears, determination setting in. "Now what do we do?"
Martinez took hold of her hand, his hold solid and comforting. We fight back. Together. We clear my name and reveal Victor for what he truly is. It will be risky, though. Are you with me?
Looking into his eyes, Lily saw the honesty and determination there. She nodded, drawing a deep breath. “Sure. You have my support”.
Martinez smiled, a genuine smile from the bottom of his heart. Alright. We'll require every bit of assistance.
The sound of breaking glass broke the moment just as they were ready to come up with a solution. Lily and Martinez turned to see a stream of dark-suited men entering the room with their rifles drawn.
"Get down!" Martinez screamed and dragged Lily to the ground.
Shouts and flying gunshots exploded into a chaotic scene that filled the room. Lily gripped Martinez, her mind screaming with panic as her heart raced.
Lily looked up as the shooting stopped and the dust settled, only to see Martinez lying next to her with blood dripping from a gash in his side.
She shouted out, "Martinez!" while trying to stop the bleeding with shaking hands.
Martinez said in a tremulous murmur, "Run." "You must leave." Right now.”
Lily's heart broke seeing the man who had become so important to her. She realized he was correct, even if she didn't want to part from him. She needed to leave that place to receive aid.
She said, "I'll come back for you," her eyes welling with tears.
Martinez nodded determination and pain in his eyes. “Go. And be careful he said.”
Lily gave Martinez one last look before scurrying to her feet and running towards the door. She had to live even if she had no idea what was waiting for her outside. For Martinez. For the truth. For what lies ahead for them.
