CHAPTER 4: UNRAVELING

1300 Words
With her heart racing, Lily bolted from the house and ran across the dimly lit streets. She just knew she had to get away to get safety and assistance—she had no idea where she was headed. It seemed as though every sound and every shadow carried a threat. She had to keep going even though she couldn't trust anyone. Her mind raced with everything Martinez had told her as she ran. Everything about Victor Turner, the deceit, and the threat seemed like a bizarre nightmare. However, Martinez's genuine voice and the grief in his eyes were genuine. She needed to trust him. She was forced to. Breathing heavily, she paused to catch her breath and gather her thoughts, she darted into a short alleyway. A plan was what she needed. She couldn't just run without thinking. She jumped as she heard her phone vibrate in her pocket. She pulled it out, with her hands shaking, and saw another message from an unknown number. "Your hiding won't last forever. We’re going to find you”. Lily's heart felt icy. How did they manage to track her? She looked around wildly, trying to find any indication that someone was watching her. She needed to figure out how to gain the upper hand, to turn the tables. And it also had to be done quickly. Something clicked in her head. She only had one option: to go to one person, whom she might be able to trust. Her old college friend Sarah, was employed by a software business. Sarah was the best person to help her figure out how they were tracking her and how to stop it. Lily took a few deep breaths before calling Sarah. Before Sarah answered, it rang twice. Hey, Lily? "Is everything alright?" With concern in her voice., Sarah spoke. Lily spoke trembling "No, it's not." "I need your help. Please can I visit your home?” Lily, of course.” I will email my address to you. Go quickly.” Lily headed for Sarah's apartment, with a fresh feeling of purpose. Though it was a bold move, she was out of options. Sarah was the one she could trust the most Fifteen minutes later, Lily arrived at Sarah's building, a modern high-rise in a tranquil area of the city. The door to Sarah's apartment snapped open when she rushed it. Her heart pounding, she ran inside. A worried-looking Sarah greeted her at the door. "What's going on, Lily? You appear frightened. As she entered, Lily said, "It's a long story." But I need your assistance. I'm being followed by someone, but I have no idea how. Can you figure this out? With a solemn look, Sarah nodded. "Leave that to me, let's go to my computer," They ran to Sarah's living room, where one corner was dominated by a modern computer setup. Sarah began typing furiously and beckoned for Lily to sit. Sarah took Lily's phone and connected it to her computer, saying, "First, let's see if there's any malware on your phone." Lily tried to slow her racing mind as Sarah worked. She was in no position to fail at this point. For Martinez's sake and her own, she had to be strong. Sarah finally looked up, her mood gloomy after what seemed like an age. "Your phone had an installed tracking app. You must not have known about it when it was done. They might be able to locate you in other ways, but I've erased it. Lily felt her heart sink. "Now what do we do?" With determination in her voice, Sarah replied, "We need to stay ahead of them." “I have a friend who works in the cybersecurity field. He could be able to help us in formulating an off-grid plan. The two women jumped when there was a loud bang on the door as Sarah was ready to answer it. Lily felt her blood freeze. "Open up, Sarah!" A deep, threatening voice screamed out into the hallway. Sarah's eyes grew wider, filled with fear. “That’s them, isn't it?” Lily nodded, her thoughts whirling. "We must leave this place. Right now.” Reaching behind her desk, Sarah took out a tiny bag and stuffed a few necessities inside. "follow me." There is an exit through the basement. They ran around the flat, feeling as though time stood still at every turn. They heard someone kicking in the front door as they got to the basement door. "Move, move!" Sarah pushed Lily forward. Their footsteps echo off the concrete walls as they run into the poorly lit basement. Lily looked back, expecting to see their pursuers at any second. Her heart was pounding in her chest. They suddenly emerged into a cool alleyway behind the building, feeling a sudden shock from the cool night air. Sarah showed her where her car was parked on a secret side street. Sarah started the engine as they dove in, and they moved out from the alleyway in time to see some men appear from the basement exit. "Where are we going?" Lily questioned, her voice wavering. Sarah answered, keeping her eyes on the road ahead, "Somewhere they won't find us." "Outside the city, I have a secure residence. There, we'll be safe. Lily's thoughts were racing with all that had happened that night as they drove. She had a persistent sense that things were about to become even more complicated. And she was right. Sarah's phone rang as they were about to enter the city. Her expression hardened even more as she took a quick peek at the screen. "This is my cybersecurity friend." He possesses the information we need.” Sarah put the phone on speaker, and the car was filled with a deep voice. Sarah, there's something you should know. You may not realize how deep this goes. There's more to Victor Turner than meets the eye. He's not just chasing Martinez; he's chasing something that has the power to alter everything. Lily felt her heart skip a beat. “What do you mean?” The person on the other end paused. “Victor has been trying to obtain a document related to a top-secret project. We refer to it as Project Phoenix And if he succeeds, it might grant him unheard-of power. Lily's thoughts were spinning. An unannounced project? Superb authority? This was much more than she could have imagined. Sarah said, "We need to stop him," with a determined tone in her voice. “However, we can't do it alone." The voice answered, "You're right." "I'll email you all of the Project Phoenix information I have. However, be careful. Victor will do everything it takes to achieve his goals. Lily and Sarah exchanged a determined look as the call ended. There was no going back now that they were in this together. But just when they believed they had a plan worked out, Sarah's car suddenly skidded and stopped. There was a black SUV in front of them, blocking the traffic. And Victor Turner himself came down from it, a chilly smile on his face. Lily felt her blood freeze. They found themselves imprisoned. As the realization of their situation set in, they realized that facing Victor head-on was the only way out. Stepping forward, Victor's eyes were fixed on Lily. Lily, you should have stayed out from interfering. Now, it is already too late. As Victor got closer, Lily's heart raced. Despite knowing they were in danger, she refused to allow fear to overcome her. She needed to think and figure out how to get out of this mess. Victor Turner posed a threat not only to Martinez and her but also to something much greater. Lily knew that the real battle was just getting started.
