Prologue: Alpha Carter
ALPHA CARTER POV
“Lydia, you know you can’t come with me this time. The boys have a few days left of school and you know that they always talk your mother into letting them stay up late and eat candy. So we can’t both leave at the same time.” I chuckle to myself thinking about my troublesome triplet sons. They could talk anyone into anything, except me. Their mother is a different story, though. She can’t resist their little squishy faces. “ The teachers cannot handle their future alphas when they’re overtired and coming down from a sugar buzz.”
“I know, Carter, we just miss you when you’re gone. Why don’t the boys and I just come with you?” My wife sighs and tips her head to the side, giving me her best puppy dog face. She hates when I go on trips without her, Jackson, Jesse, and Jeremy.
“Honey, don’t make that face at me. I’ll only be gone for two days. Besides, no one makes those little heart shaped sandwiches for their lunches like you do. They love those too much. How about when I return, we take the boys on a short beach trip?” I have to give her something or she’ll keep making that face and I’ll give in. I can’t take the boys out of school their last week. Not very Alpha-like behavior. We cannot have our future Alpha’s thinking it’s okay to shirk their responsibilities just because they have the power to do so.
“OK, fine. That does sound really nice actually.” She smiled that dimpled, megawatt smile that I love so much. Thank the goddess that she is so sweet and easy going. It’s already hard enough leaving them, I don’t know if I could handle it if she put up much more of a fight.
“Perfect! I’ll just get the rest of these trade contracts settled and signed with Alpha Brian and I’ll be back as quick as possible.”
“UGH! I can’t believe I have to miss out on seeing Melanie! You know we always take the boys out and do some shopping!”
“I know, maybe next. . .” Just then, I’m interrupted by our three boys barreling into the room. They all jump on me and cling to me like baby koalas, nearly knocking me over.
“Daddy!” They scream in unison.
“Hey there, boys! You three be good for your mother and your teachers while I’m gone. Do you hear me?”
“Yes, Dad.” They all groan out together. They’re really getting good at doing things in tandem.
“I’m going to miss you too much Daddy! Can’t we just come with?” Jackson whines, always wanting things to go his way. I don’t get a chance to respond before Jesse is chiming in.
“Just make sure you drive safe, daddy. Don’t let Uncle Leo drive crazy again!” Jesse is always so careful.
“If you’re going to the White Moon Pack without us, then I think you should bring us some of that taffy we like. You do still love us enough, don’t you?” Jeremy blinks his eyes innocently. Lydia and I both burst out laughing at this. Jeremy is such a playful boy and he knows just the right buttons to push.
“OK, OK! You guys win! I’ll bring the taffy. And of course, I love you guys! Now, I really have to get going or we will be late. I’ll call you after the meeting, Lyd.” I give everyone a hug and a kiss goodbye and linger a little longer on my wife’s kiss. “ I love you!”
“I love you, too!” Even Lydia is joining in on saying things at the same time as the boys. They’re going to have their own circus act by the time I get back.
. . . . . . . . . . .
The drive over to the White Moon Pack is always the worst. Especially when it’s just my Beta Leo and I. He’s my best friend but he is not the most talkative guy, which makes for one boring as.s road trip.
i sit in the passenger seat watching the scenery pass by. Farm land, farm land, and more farm land! “UGH!” I groan aloud. Whoever decided to put all of these farms between the packs needs to be punished! There’s pretty much nothing around for miles. Just corn and cows.
I cannot wait to finish up this deal with Alpha Brian and be done with it. They’re struggling financially right now, so I’m giving Alpha Brian a ten percent stake in our logging company in exchange for twenty- five percent of his pack lands and his first born daughter. Now, i know how that sounds but I’m not taking his daughter. It’ll be her hand for my sons, to solidify the alliance of our packs for generations to come. I’ll also be able to ensure that my sons end up with a strong Luna from a good family.
I stare lost in thought, until I hear Leo shout. “What the f***k is this guy doing?!”
I don’t even have a moment to react when I see a black SUV heading straight for us. It hits us head on like they were aiming for us. Our SUV slams to a stop and our air bags deploy. I feel disoriented and my head is pounding, but I immediately start trying to deflate my air bag by releasing my claws and tearing through it.
Before I can even finish unwinding this da.mn thing off of me, I hear tires screeching all around us. I look out the window to see that four more SUV’s have joined the party. What the Hell?
Next thing I know, there are a dozen men jumping out and descending upon us. My window got smashed in the impact so there is no barrier whatsoever. My eyes widen as a gun is thrust into my face. I chance a glance at Leo and he’s got a gun in his face, too.
“Alpha Carter. . . “ The guy holding the gun is a big, burly man with a bald head and a goatee. I don’t immediately recognize him, but he looks vaguely familiar.
He’s not as big as I am, but he is at least as big as Leo. I have no advantage from inside the car. He has a gun and eleven of his closest friends with him. We’re fu.cked.
“Yes, that’s me. What the f***k is the meaning of this?!”
“Alpha Brian knows you know. Sorry about this, but she must be protected at all costs. . .”
“What. . .”
BANG!
BANG!
