Chapter 16

1048 Words
As Marley navigated the familiar streets toward her house, she couldn’t help but glance back at her parents seated comfortably in the backseat. It had been a long day filled with hospital visits, doctor's appointments, and more than a few worries, but now, seeing them together, she felt a wave of relief wash over her. “Mom, how are you feeling now?” Marley asked, glancing in the rearview mirror. Her mother smiled softly, her face still a bit pale but brightening at the question. “I’m doing much better, sweetheart. Just glad to be out of that hospital bed!” her mom replied, the warmth in her voice easing Marley's lingering anxiety. “That’s great to hear! I made your favorite dinner for us tonight,” Marley said, her heart skipping happily further. She could already imagine the smell of roasted chicken and fresh herbs filling the kitchen. “Yum! What is it? Are we having those mashed potatoes?” her dad chimed in, his enthusiasm evident even after everything they had just been through. “Of course! And I also picked up some fresh green beans from the market,” Marley added, smiling at the thought of the meal. Cooking was one of her ways of expressing love, and she wanted to make this evening special. As they pulled into the driveway, Marley turned off the engine and got out to help her parents. She watched as they carefully maneuvered out of the car, her mom leaning on her dad for support. “I’m so proud of you both for being so strong,” she said as they walked toward the front door. Once inside, the cozy atmosphere of her home enveloped them, contrasting sharply with the sterile environment of the hospital. Marley quickly set about preparing dinner, while her parents settled into the living room, grateful to be in a space that felt like home. “You know, Marley, you’ve always been our rock,” her dad said, his voice warm yet tinged with emotion. “We wouldn’t have gotten through this without you.” “I just did what anyone would do,” Marley replied, trying to brush off the compliment while secretly reveling in it. “You two have always been there for me. It’s my turn to take care of you now.” As she stirred the pot on the stove, a sense of normalcy washed over her. Laughter echoed in the kitchen as her parents reminisced about old family dinners, their voices blending harmoniously with the sound of sizzling pans. After dinner, they sat around the table, sharing stories and enjoying each other’s company. The earlier tension of the hospital visits faded away, replaced by warmth and connection. Later that evening, as Marley helped her parents get settled in and prepared for bed, she felt a sense of gratitude. Life had thrown its challenges, but moments like these reminded her of the strength of family bonds. As she kissed them goodnight, she whispered, “Love you guys. Tomorrow will be even better,” she said as she walked out of their room and down the hall to her own As Marley settled into bed, the soft glow of her bedside lamp wrapped the room in a warm embrace, contrasting with the chill creeping up from the message that suddenly lit up her phone screen. She picked it up, expecting a casual text from Jonathan, perhaps something about their plans for the weekend. Instead, her heart plummeted as she read the ominous words:*“I see you and Jonathan. Do you think you’re safe? You have no idea what I’m capable of.”* Marley’s breath caught in her throat. The familiar comfort of her room faded, replaced by a suffocating sense of dread. Who could have sent this? Her thoughts raced back to the gala had someone been watching her? The idea made her skin crawl. Not wasting a second she quickly went through her messages and found Jonathan's contact, her hands shook with fear and her heart raced. She sent him a few texts hurrying to get a response from him. She quickly shot a text to Jonathan, her fingers trembling as she typed, *“Did you get my text? We need to talk. Something’s not right.”* She stared at the ceiling, her mind whirling. Should she tell her parents? No, they had enough to worry about right now. But what if they were in danger too? Anxiety twisted in her stomach. Within moments, Jonathan’s reply buzzed in. *“Hey, what’s wrong?.”* She couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. Marley slid out of bed and locked her bedroom door, her heart racing as she paced the floor. The silence of the house felt deafening, every creak echoing like a warning. When she heard knocking on the front door, she rushed downstairs to meet Jonathan, without a second thought she threw the door open. She jumped in his arms, slight concern etched across his face, Marley knew she had to tell him everything. She stayed in his arms for a moment before taking a breath and looking up at him. “Jonathan, I got this weird text...threatening us,” she said, showing him the message. His eyes widened a bit as he read it, anger replacing the initial look of confusion from before. “Who would do this?” he asked, his voice low and serious. “Have you told anyone else?” “Not yet. I didn’t want to freak my parents out, especially after everything…” Marley trailed off, biting her lip. “Let’s not jump to conclusions. I'll find out who sent this,” he suggested, pulling her close as if trying to shield her from the unknown. Marley nodded, but the feeling of unease lingered, settling heavily in her chest. She’d never experienced anything like this before, and the thought of someone threatening them set off alarm bells in her mind. She invited him in and then shut the door behind them and led Jonathan into the living room. As they sat down together on the couch, Marley realized one thing: whatever was happening, she and Jonathan would face it together. They had each other, and that was a start.
