Chapter 17

(Jonathan POV) The days dragged on, each one an echo of the last, but with an undercurrent of tension that made everything feel heavier. I stood in the hallway, glancing out the window at the two security guards stationed by the front door. They were ever-present, like shadows that had attached themselves to Marley, their watchful eyes scanning the surroundings with grim determination. A couple of days had passed since the threatening message landed in her inbox words that bothered me that they were bothering her now: “I see you.” Marley moved through her daily routine with a mixture of grace and resignation. I was already dressed in my tailored black and gray suit and waiting by her bedroom door, As she got ready for work at Blackwell Enterprises, the sleek black shirt she pulled over her head, followed by a white skirt with black leggings. I stood in the doorway of her bedroom, my arms crossed tightly over my chest, trying to mask my worry with my usual dull Look. “Are you sure you want to go in today?” I asked the question hanging in the air like an unsolved problem. She paused, brushing her hair long curly back from her face, and shot me a sidelong glance. “I’m not going to let some coward shake me. I need to keep living my life, Jonathan. But honestly, it feels ridiculous with them following me everywhere.” I understood her frustration; I felt it too. The absurdity of our situation irritated me. The vivacious woman who'd become a part of me now had to don a protective cloak just to step outside. “I get it, but you know why we’re doing this,” I pressed, trying to pull her focus back to the reason behind all these precautions. “Because of a stupid message?” she shot back, her tone sharper than I’d anticipated. “This isn’t how I want to live, Jonathan.” Her words echoed painfully, slicing through my resolve. In the past few days, I’d watched her navigate her life with a fragile determination, her laughter strained, her smiles forced. She deserved to feel safe, to walk confidently through her world without the shadow of fear looming over her shoulder. “Look, I just want you to be safe,” I said, my tone, more blunt and cold, trying to hold in my anger and stepping closer to her. “You work for me so I am obligated to protect you; I’d do anything to keep you safe.” Marley sighed and ran her fingers through her hair, spilling thoughts from her mouth quicker than I could catch them. “What if they think it’s too much? What if the team thinking they’re saving me just puts a target on my back?” she said “That’s not how it works,” I reassured her. “If anything happens, it would be because we didn’t take it seriously enough.” Our back-and-forth was punctuated by silence, a moment of reflection as she stared at her reflection in the mirror. The confidence we both knew was still there flickered behind her worry. I wanted to reach through and help untwist the mess of emotions coiling within her. As she turned to face me again, the softness in her eyes reminded me of how I met her as I stared into those green hues. Now, the stakes had escalated, and the world outside the door felt foreign. “How long is this going to last?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly. “I don’t know,” I admitted. “Until we figure out who sent that message, I’ll keep the security detail. We can reassess when it feels safer.” She nodded, though the tension remained etched on her brow. “Fine, but I swear, if this keeps up too long, I might just lose my mind.” A small laugh escaped my lips despite the heaviness hanging in the air, caught between amusement and hope. With a weary sigh, she finished tying her hair back, finally meeting my gaze with a quiet resolve. “Okay, let’s get this over with.” We stepped out of her house, the chill of the morning air hitting us like a reality check. The two guards fell in line behind us as we walked towards her car, and I could feel Marley’s posture stiffen, her mind racing with thoughts I couldn’t quite I didn't know of. “Hey, you’ve got this,” I said, placing a hand on her shoulder as we reached her vehicle. “Just another day at the office, right?” She smiled just a little, the corners of her mouth lifting, even though the light didn’t fully return to her eyes. As I slid into the driver’s seat, she settled into the passenger side, acutely aware of the two men hovering near us like unseen ghosts. They were vigilant, and while I appreciated their presence, it was a stark reminder of how much Marley’s world had shifted. The drive to Blackwell Enterprises felt longer than usual. The city outside the window blurred into a medley of muted colors. -Short Timeskip- As I stepped off the elevator on the 22nd floor of Blackwell Enterprises, I took a moment to gather myself. The fluorescent lights flickered slightly overhead, casting a sterile glow over the expansive floor filled with bustling employees. I looked ahead blankly as I approached my office, a sleek glass box nestled against the wall, offering just a glimpse of the world beyond. I could see Tom and Lisa, the ever-vigilant security guards, stationed outside like sentinels, their expressions neutral but watchful.“Morning, Jonathan,” Tom greeted me as I walked past, his voice warm but edged with professionalism. Lisa nodded, her eyes scanning the corridor for anything unusual. They were my security, and though I didn’t show it, their presence gave me a sense of safety amidst the chaos. I pushed open the door to my office and stepped inside. The space was immaculately arranged: a modern desk with sleek lines, a few carefully selected pieces of art hanging on the walls, and a small plant that added a touch of life to the otherwise austere environment. But today, the room felt stifling. The reality of my position hung like a weight on my chest. As soon as I sat down, I began to sort through the piles of emails that had accumulated overnight. Each one was a message demanding my attention, updates from project managers, requests for approvals, and increasingly persistent inquiries from clients. Just as I began to find my rhythm, a knock interrupted my focus. I glanced up to see my security standing in my doorway. They stood tall and stepped inside with ease and grace. They held themselves with a confidence that bordered on arrogance to some, and I couldn’t help but chuckle at them and their presence. “May I come in?” Tom asked, his voice smooth yet commanding. It wasn’t a question; it was a statement. I raised a brow, gave a small nod, and gestured for him and Lisa to enter. “Of course. What can I do for you both?” I said my tone was steady. He stepped into my office and closed the door behind him, shutting out the rest of the world. “I wanted to check on the situation to see if everything is okay,” he said coolly, leaning against the door frame. His gaze on me, seemed to analyze everything about me, as if he were trying to see through my carefully constructed facade. I sat back in my chair and looked at them with a small smirk. “We’re on track. I’m finalizing some proposals today, and I should have them ready for review by tomorrow morning other than that everything is fine.” My hands moved deftly over the keyboard, pulling up the document I’d been working on. “I’ve incorporated the feedback from the last presentation.” I continue They stepped closer. I could feel Tom's stare which I was unfazed by, but still made it hard to concentrate. “That's Good to hear but is there anything else?” His words were calm but laced with an undertone of caution “No,” I replied, forcing a smile even as my irritation grew. “I’ll call for you if there is.” Tom studied me for a moment, and I wondered what thoughts ran through his mind. Was he assessing my capabilities? Judging my worth? The thought made me chuckle to myself a bit. I stared at him down unfazed as he looked back. “Alright,” he finally said, his tone shifting slightly as if we had reached some unspoken agreement. “Just remember,” he continued, his tone becoming more serious, “if you ever need anything or have any info to help us to protect you and Miss brown let us know” His gaze bore into me, and I nodded a bit. “Yes, of course,” I replied smoothly leaving my mouth I watched them nod back and turn to leave before disappearing out the door to my office. I shook my head and thought maybe they were trying to intimidate me, but it didn't work. I've seen more scary bugs than them. I went back to typing and getting some work done. As time went on I thought about Jake who had sent me a message before, I wondered if Jake was the one who threatened Marley from that unknown number. I finished approving some projects and setting up some Market deals for company growth. I looked up for a moment the more I thought about it, I stood up, grabbed my phone, and looked at the unknown number. My feet carried me out of my office and passed the security without a second thought, I moved down the halls and made it to Marley's office. I opened the door without knocking stepped in and shut the door behind me. She looked up at me. I got lost in her green eyes for a moment. I walked closer as she offered me a smile and held out my hand. “Let me see your phone for a moment,” I said bluntly and without hesitation as she without a second thought handed her phone to me “What's wrong?” She asked me as I looked through her messages and found the unknown number I pulled up my phone and looked between them both and saw they were the same. I raised an eyebrow and felt a slight pride at finding a connection. This meant Jake was probably the one who sent these messages but I couldn't confirm this yet. “I believe who sent you these messages and I think that they are the same person, I may know who it is but I can't firm it, I will look deeper into this,” I said looking at her and handing her phone back as she nodded and took it “Mind telling me who it could be?” she asked me as I rubbed my chin in thought and looked down at the ground for a moment “I don't mean to alarm you but it could be Jake,” I said with disgust and slight anger as I looked at her my gray eyes narrowed She looked in shock for a moment and just sat back in disbelief and shock. A few moments passed and we remained silent, as I thought about how things just got more interesting.
