Jenny was having a hard time concentrating as she sat at her desk on Monday morning. Even though Robert had been acting professional towards her since their passionate encounter on Friday night, she couldn't stop thinking about every little detail. Jenny worked as an assistant for the CEO of Sterling Industries, Robert Sterling, and she knew that getting involved romantically with her boss was a risky move. The only sign that there was something more between them was the way Robert looked at her when they worked late together. Jenny got startled when her phone rang, and her heart was still racing from the memories.
"Hey, are we still going for happy hour?" Jenny's best friend Samantha asked on the phone. "Definitely, I really need a drink," Jenny replied with a sigh. Going out with Samantha would help take her mind off things. After finishing work, Jenny met Samantha at their favorite wine bar near the office. They found a cozy booth and ordered some Chardonnay. Jenny couldn't hold back her mixed emotions and started pouring her heart out. "Wait, hold on! You hooked up with Robert late at night in the office?!" Samantha whispered in disbelief. Jenny nodded, feeling both excited and ashamed. "I know it was a dumb and risky thing to do. But in that moment, it felt like we both lost control. We had been working so closely together, and all that tension just exploded." Samantha looked at her friend with concern. "I get that the heart wants what it wants, but this could get really messy."
Jenny totally got what Samantha was saying. She promised herself that she wouldn't spend any more alone time with Robert that could get too close. But deep down, she kind of wished Samantha hadn't been so sensible. Being with Robert had awakened something exciting in Jenny. Now that they had crossed that line, she could not resist the temptation.
In the following weeks, Jenny and Robert fell into a secret routine. During the day, they acted all professional and serious. But at night, they couldn't help stealing glances and touching each other in a way that made Jenny's skin tingle. These risky encounters left Jenny feeling both satisfied and guilty. She knew that their secret meetings could ruin their careers, but she couldn't resist the thrill of having the CEO's undivided attention behind closed doors. Jenny wondered how Robert managed to balance their affair with his normal life as a family man. Even though they never talked about it, she could tell that being with her was an escape for him too.
Jenny finally gathered the courage to ask Robert a question that had been bothering her for a while. She wanted to know if he had ever thought about leaving his wife for real. As soon as she asked, Robert's face went from vulnerable to cold and distant in an instant. The tension in the room became unbearable. Jenny held her breath, waiting for his answer. But instead of giving her a straight answer, Robert turned away and got back to work, straightening his tie and organizing his papers. He told Jenny that what they had was just a way to escape reality, a fantasy. He had responsibilities that he couldn't just abandon.
Jenny felt like she had been slapped. She stood there, trembling, trying her best to hold back the tears. But what about her? What about their relationship? she asked, her voice filled with desperation. Robert turned back to her and held her hands, his expression softening. "You're really special to me, Jenny. But you deserve someone who can give you their whole heart, not just stolen moments here and there." He gently kissed her forehead and then stepped away, his face emotionless once again. "Go home and get some rest," he said firmly. It was clear that the conversation was over. Jenny gathered her things, feeling small and foolish. She had broken the unspoken rules of their arrangement by asking for more than Robert was willing to give. The excitement of their secret meetings was undeniable, but could she really continue being the other woman?
As Jenny stepped outside, she couldn't but shiver. It wasn't because of the cold, though. The excitement she had felt just a few moments ago had disappeared, leaving her feeling drained. She started to wonder if she had imagined the way Robert looked at her with kindness on those nights, making something simple seem more meaningful. Jenny knew she should stop this reckless behavior before it took over her life. But the thought of never feeling Robert's touch again, his passionate kisses, made her heart ache with emptiness. Even though their relationship was strange, it was still the closest she had ever felt to someone. Jenny couldn't sleep, tossing and turning all night, unable to calm her racing thoughts. As much as she wanted to break things off with Robert, the strong attraction between them still held her tightly.
The next day, Jenny stayed away from Robert’s office, but when he emailed her to ask her to work late that night, she couldn’t say no. That evening, as they worked together on documents, tension simmered until Robert swept her into his arms and kissed her, and she kissed him back. “We shouldn’t be doing this,” she said weakly between wild sweeps of his mouth along her jawline. Robert drew back, and his eyes were dark with lust. “I know I shouldn’t do this,” he said, “but I can’t help it. I need you.” His raw admission wiped away her reservations, and they desperately shed their clothes, and lay on his office couch together. Jenny knew that she was prolonging the inevitable pain, but at that moment she didn’t care; all she cared about was feeling him against her.
Afterward, Robert held Jenny close, her head tucked under his chin. She decided to try one more time. "Robert, do you see a future for us? Not just stolen moments at the office?" she asked softly. He tensed and withdrew his arms. "Jenny, we've talked about this." Jenny sat up. "I know. But I need more. I can't keep pretending I'm okay with the status quo between us." Robert turned away, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "You know my family obligations. I just can't upend everything. Jenny felt tears forming but forced them back. "Then I guess this is over. It's gone too far." Robert looked stricken. "Jenny, be reasonable...". But Jenny was already gathering her things, unable to meet his eyes. At the doorway, she steeled herself and turned back. "Goodbye, Robert." Robert started to respond, but seemed to think better of it. He watched silently as she walked out of his office and possibly out of his life. Jenny managed to hold back her tears until she got home and collapsed in bed. She knew ending things was the right choice, but it still left her shattered.
Work the next day was difficult feeling Robert's eyes on her as she avoided him. When she clocked out that evening, Robert tried to approach her. "Jenny, can we talk?" he asked gently. "I think it's best we don't just yet," Jenny replied, slipping past him and away from temptation. She decided then to request a transfer to a different department - it was the only way she could fully move on.
