*Jay*
Next door? What does fate mean to keep peppering this man throughout my new life?
She hadn’t heard a car when he surprised her earlier, but she didn’t think that much about it. How could she? His smell and heat so close to her had fried her brain today. She hadn’t had these reactions with other men before. Even with Chris she hadn’t felt so reckless. Drinking with a man she barely knew was also new to her. Day full of firsts.
Jay didn’t drink, and when Greg asked her if she liked light or dark she really had no idea which she preferred, so she just picked one.
It has been a long day, she thought. Surely with this nightcap she would sleep good tonight, even though she was on an air mattress until her furniture arrived. The kitchen in the home was staged for the sale so thankfully she at least had a little table and two chairs to sit on, and a few other essentials.
Jay setup her mattress, then proceeded to ready herself for a nice hot shower. The hot water cascaded down her body, releasing the tension from the day. She felt like a new person afterward.
She stuttered a bit when it came to choosing what to put on. Was this a date? After their rough start things had panned out well. He had lightened and was even joking around with her. She settled on comfort over looking sexy.
Just as she was putting together a light snack for them she heard his knock. Greg poured them two shots of the brown liquid.
“Shots?”
“Yea, you gonna be ok?” Jay considered his question, probably not but she raised her shot and said, “To new beginnings and new friends!” With that she downed all the contents of her glass. Greg immediately refilled her glass, “Oh no, I shouldn’t.”
“What you got to do tomorrow?” She looked straight at him then for a long time… “Nothing, but go to the notary with you.” He smiled, and she suddenly noticed he hadn’t done that all day, because she would have remembered that smile. He then raised his glass, “To another round!” They both tossed back their shots and dropped their glasses. Greg refilled them once more.
Jay was feeling the shots. She had gotten comfortable and told Greg things she usually wouldn’t to someone she had only met that day.
After awhile, she got up to use the bathroom, and when she returned Greg was gone. Had she imagined him before? No, the liquor bottle and two glasses were here as she remembered.
She found him lying face down on her air mattress. He sounded like he was snoring, but Jay also thought she heard him say something. Too tired to worry she crawled on to the mattress and fell effortlessly to sleep.
