Chapter 3: The Midnight Meeting
Lexi arrived at the old warehouse on 5th and Main, her heart racing with anticipation. She had told Ethan and Jack about the meeting, but Raven had insisted she come alone. Lexi hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should have ignored Raven's instructions and brought backup. But her curiosity got the better of her, and she stepped out of her car and into the darkness.
The warehouse loomed before her, its windows broken and its doors hanging off their hinges. Lexi shivered, despite the warmth of the summer night. She approached the entrance, her eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of Raven.
"Raven?" she called out, her voice barely above a whisper.
A figure emerged from the darkness, their features obscured by a hoodie.
"Lexi," Raven said, their voice low and gravelly. "Thanks for coming."
Lexi nodded, her eyes locked on Raven's face. "What do you have for me?"
Raven hesitated, glancing around nervously. "I have proof of Senator Parker's wrongdoings. But we need to be quick. I'm not sure how long we have before his people find out I'm talking to you."
Lexi's heart raced as Raven handed her a folder filled with documents and photographs. She scanned them quickly, her eyes widening as she realized the extent of Senator Parker's corruption.
"This is huge," Lexi breathed. "But we need more. Can you get me access to his financial records?"
Raven nodded. "I can try. But it's risky. If Senator Parker finds out, he'll stop at nothing to silence me."
Lexi's mind raced with the implications. She knew that she had to protect Raven's identity at all costs.
"I'll make sure you're protected," Lexi promised. "But we need to move fast. Can you meet me at the Daily Times tomorrow, at noon?"
Raven nodded, their eyes locked on Lexi's face. "I'll be there. But be careful, Lexi. Senator Parker has a lot of power, and he won't hesitate to use it."
As Lexi drove back to her apartment, her mind raced with the possibilities. She knew that she had a long and dangerous road ahead of her, but she was determined to expose Senator Parker's corruption, no matter the cost.
The next morning, Lexi arrived at the Daily Times, her heart racing with excitement. She had barely slept, her mind replaying the events of the previous night over and over. Ethan and Jack were already at their desks, their eyes locked on her as she approached.
"Well?" Ethan asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "What did Raven give you?"
Lexi smiled, her eyes gleaming with excitement. "Proof of Senator Parker's corruption. And a promise to get us more evidence, if we can keep him safe."
Jack's eyes narrowed. "We need to be careful. Senator Parker has a lot of influence, and he won't hesitate to use it."
Lexi nodded, her mind racing with the possibilities. She knew that she, Ethan, and Jack were in this together, and they wouldn't rest until they brought Senator Parker to justice.
