CHAPTER FOUR
THE OVERDUE LETTER
Andorra’s POV
About to leave Mrs. Nibs' house, I tidied up my hair, tucked in my shirt properly, put on a little make-up on my face, slowly regaining consciousness of what happened that night in the library. I realized It was Zula who took advantage while I was under the influence. I wasn’t wrong about my perception. Shame overtook me as I remembered every single act, but totally glad he didn’t go too far. Stepping out of her apartment, not quite sure of what she meant, I headed home. I could have walked because the distance was quite short, but the anxiety and fear that crept up made me jump into the cab I came across the street. My stomach rumbled so loudly in the cab, that I pressed my bag against my body so tightly. The person sitting beside shot me a questioning look. I acted like it wasn’t me and understood why my stomach rumbled, I was so caught up in my situation I forgot to eat something. Now, I only hope my dad doesn’t find out the letter is for him. I hissed, if I had resisted the urge to take the alcohol, I’d have been in my right senses and done what was required. I walked towards the door, counting each step I took, hoping the letter wasn’t from the Alpha. Because a rumor like that wouldn’t flare up if the twin that spread it wasn’t in contact with me. It dawned on me that Zula had delivered the letter while I was intoxicated. A kind of feeling struck me as I confirmed the rumor about me was true. I brazed myself as I walked into my dad’s room. He wasn’t in, as he never lets his curtain down except when he’s in the poultry. I sprinted to the poultry, there he was, his back turned to me as he lifted a pig onto the barrow. I could see he was worn out and stressed. I tried convincing him several times to leave the poultry for me, but he wouldn’t adhere. I watched as he placed yet another we struggled to keep alive, in his old worn-out work clothes. The poultry was built behind our small apartment, with woods. Due to lack of funds, we didn’t get it to standard. “Hey dad, I’ve asked you to leave the poultry, it’s stressing you out” I said, watching him turn towards me at the sound of my voice. “My dear, you’re welcome, he said patting me a little with his elbow due to his gloved protected hands. Tilting his head backwards, “you look worried, what’s the matter?” he asked. “Dad, there’s something I must tell you” I said, my voice a bit shaky. He became more concerned, as he drew his brows together. “What is it that bothers you so much? He asked as he stopped struggling with the wheelbarrow. He slowly removed his gloves and came closer, grabbing my arm gently as he motioned me towards the house without uttering another word. My heart kept pounding in my heart, hoping the letter wasn’t from the Alpha. At the same time, it would be unreal if it wasn’t. Dad hasn’t received letters for the past two years now, and the last letter was from the Alpha. As we walked into the room, he took a seat while I sank into the bed. “Tell me” he said with all concentration. “Zula, one of the Alpha twins, dropped a letter for you the previous night, but I forgot to hand it over to you.” I said, watching his face carefully as the expression changed to that of confusion. “You’re saying I got a letter yesterday” he said to be clear, I nodded vigorously as I handed the letter over to him. My father was a dedicated employee, always the first to arrive and the last to leave. The thought of him being fired because of my Mom’s decision to leave sent a surge of adrenaline through my veins. “Dora, what’s going on?” I put the letter into his hands, gasping for breath. “You need to read it. Now” I said, cutting off all delays. His face paled as he read the letter. He looked up, eyes wide with a mix of shock and determination. “Why didn’t you tell me earlier?” he said, “I’m so sorry, Dad, I choked out, my heart ripping at the look on his face. “I didn’t know it was for you.” I said holding back the tears as it escaped from my eyes uncontrollably. “I watched you slip it into your pocket in the morning, you should have just given it to me at the point” “I’m so sorry, Dad” That was all I said, as everything happened so fast, and I was unconscious about the activity. “It’s from the Alpha” he said scratching his head like it’s on fire. “What does the letter say?” I asked his, curious to know what was written on the paper. Since mom left the house, he reduced his punctuality, drinking liquor. I just hoped he’d not been fired. “It’s a twenty-four-hour warning” he said, weakly folding the letter. “Dad, please make it clear” I was becoming impatient with his few words, then it clicked in my head that he was warned to resume in twenty-four hours, or he’d be fired. Clearly catching a grip on what the letter said, I became more worried. “It’s over time Dora, how do we fix this?” He asked, staring at me sadly. I caused this, blaming myself as I looked up at his gloomy face. If he’d read the letter in the morning, the situation would probably not have been this far. “We’ll fix this” I said, reassuring him. “You know Dora, before now, that they kept insisting I quit my job as a gardener due to my age?” he said. I totally thought it was a good idea, “They are right Dad, you’re getting old, I always tell you that” I said, as he stared at me blankly like I was a stature, wondering why he would come up with quitting his job. Then he continued, like I didn’t speak, “It’s worse than you think, Dora. They suggested I quit, in exchange for you, as their maiden.” He said. The words echoed in my head, each one striking with a force I hadn’t expected. I felt all the color drain from my face. I felt my heartbeat quicken, my breathing becoming dull and shallow. I began feeling a dull ache, spreading slowly until it felt like a vice gripping my head.
I closed my eyes, trying to steady myself. The room seemed to fade away as I was consumed by a wave of anxiety at the thought of living with those pathetic, trouble-making twins. A good and bad feeling was replaced with anxiety at that moment. I noticed I was being steadied as dad held me tightly. “Be calm, Dora,” he said firmly. “Is that what the letter says?” I asked as I grabbed the letter from him, reading through it at a glance. “Refusal to resume in twenty-four hours will cause the action of picking up Andorra Finch.” I read the letter out loud with shaky hands. I looked up at my Dad with fear and panic, and noticed his eyes were filled with tears. Come morning, I will be held captive by the Alpha. I looked over at the clock on the table, it was already ticking towards 12:00am. I stood up from the bed and walked over to my room, giving my dad his privacy. That night was the most terrible night as I rolled restlessly in bed thinking about the next day.
