Chapter One: THE GIRL WHO BELIEVED IN FOREVER AND HER HEART THAT REFUSED TO LISTEN.

The rain had just stopped when Amara Williams stepped through the gates of Crown Heights University. The morning breeze carried the scent of wet grass, while students hurried across campus with backpacks slung over their shoulders. Some laughed loudly, others argued over assignments, and a few rushed to avoid being marked late for lectures. For Amara, today was more than the beginning of another academic session. It was the beginning of a life she had dreamed about since childhood.

She tightened her grip on the admission file pressed against her chest and smiled to herself."One day, I'll make Mum proud." That promise had carried her through sleepless nights, endless examinations, and years of watching her widowed mother sew clothes until dawn just to pay school fees.Failure had never been an option.Neither had love.At least...That was what she believed.Three years later...Amara was one of the brightest students in the Department of Mass Communication. Lecturers admired her intelligence. Friends envied her discipline. Junior students looked up to her as though success followed wherever she walked.Yet behind every smile was a quiet loneliness. While others spent weekends at parties or on dates, Amara buried herself in books."You're wasting your youth," her best friend, Lara, often teased.Amara laughed every time."I'm here for a degree, not heartbreak."Lara rolled her eyes."Everyone says that until they meet the right person.""The right person doesn't exist.""You'll remember those words.""I won't."Neither of them knew fate was listening. It happened on a Thursday afternoon. The campus was unusually busy because final-year students were defending their projects. Amara hurried toward the library, balancing three textbooks and her laptop.Someone turned the corner at the same moment.

Bang! Books scattered across the floor.Sheets of paper danced in the wind."Oh my goodness!" Amara gasped."I'm so sorry."A deep voice replied with a calm laugh."I should be apologizing."She looked up.For a moment...Everything around her seemed to disappear. He wasn't the most handsome man on campus, nor was he dressed in designer clothes. He wore a simple navy-blue shirt with rolled-up sleeves and carried an old leather backpack that had clearly seen better days. But his eyes...They held a quiet warmth that made strangers feel strangely safe.He bent down, gathered her books carefully, and handed them back one after another."I believe these belong to you."Amara accepted them."Thank you."He noticed the title of one of the books."Media Ethics.""You like journalism?""I love telling stories."He smiled."Then maybe one day you'll tell mine."She chuckled politely."Only if it's worth telling.""It will be."There was something about the certainty in his voice that lingered in her mind long after they walked away in opposite directions. She didn't know his name.He didn't ask for hers.Yet both of them looked back once.Just once. And somehow...That single glance would become the beginning of a story neither of them could escape. That evening, while Amara sat in the hostel reading for the next day's lecture, Lara burst into the room without knocking."You'll never guess what happened today!""What?""Daniel Cole is back on campus."Amara frowned."Who's Daniel Cole?"Lara stared at her in disbelief."The Daniel Cole? The former Student Union President? The guy everyone still talks about? First Class graduate. Started his own media company before graduation. He came back today as one of the guest speakers for the entrepreneurship summit."Amara's heart skipped. For some reason...The stranger from the library flashed through her mind."No way..." she whispered."What?""Nothing."She looked out of the hostel window as the evening sky slowly surrendered to darkness.Somewhere on campus...A man whose name she had only just heard was thinking about the girl who had smiled while picking up scattered books.Neither of them knew that destiny had quietly crossed their paths.Neither of them knew that two small decisions...Would one day destroy everything they were about to build.

University life had a strange way of bringing people together.

Sometimes by choice.

Sometimes by fate.

Sometimes...

By a collision neither person saw coming.

After the incident at the library, Amara convinced herself it was nothing more than an ordinary encounter between two strangers. She returned to her routine—lectures, assignments, presentations, and long evenings in the library.

Yet every now and then, she caught herself wondering if she would ever see him again.

She didn't know why.

She barely knew his face.

Still...

Something about him had quietly settled in a corner of her heart.

Two weeks later...

The Faculty of Arts organized an entrepreneurship conference. Every student was expected to attend.

The auditorium overflowed with excitement. Hundreds of students filled every seat while lecturers occupied the front row.

WRONG DECISION WRONG RESULTS
CHAPTER TWO THE BEGINNING OF PAINFUL MISTAKE The stage was decorated with blue and white drapes, and a large banner read: "Building Your Future Beyond the Classroom." Lara nudged Amara. "You're lucky we came early." "I'm only here because attendance is compulsory." "You'll thank me later." The lights dimmed. The Dean stepped onto the stage. "Ladies and gentlemen, our first guest speaker needs no introduction. He's one of our finest alumni. Today he owns one of the fastest-growing digital media companies in Lagos." The hall erupted into applause. "Ladies and gentlemen..." "Please welcome..." "Mr. Daniel Cole." Amara froze. Her heartbeat quickened. The confident man walking onto the stage was the same stranger who had helped her gather her books outside the library. He looked different today. Dressed in a charcoal suit with a simple wristwatch and polished shoes, Daniel carried himself with quiet confidence. There was no unnecessary showmanship. No arrogance. Just calm authority. He smiled at the audience before adjusting the microphone. "I won't stand here and tell you success is easy." Silence filled the auditorium. "Because it isn't." "I failed twice before I succeeded." Some students exchanged surprised glances. "I lost investors." "I was mocked." "I slept in my office because I couldn't afford rent." "But every setback taught me something." He paused. "Never let temporary hardship convince you to abandon permanent purpose." The hall became unusually quiet. Amara listened without blinking. His words weren't rehearsed. They came from experience. From pain. From survival. For the first time in years... Someone's voice reached places inside her heart that no lecture ever had. After the conference ended, students rushed toward Daniel for photographs and business advice. Lara grabbed Amara's wrist. "Come on!" "For what?" "To greet him." "I don't know him." "You'll never know him if you keep standing there." Before Amara could protest, Lara dragged her through the crowd. Daniel was answering questions when he suddenly looked up. Their eyes met. Recognition flashed across his face. "The library." Amara smiled shyly. "You remember?" "I've always had a good memory." Lara looked from one to the other. "You two know each other?" Daniel chuckled. "We've met before." "Well..." Lara grinned mischievously. "I'll leave you two to continue your conversation." Before Amara could stop her... She disappeared into the crowd. Traitor. Daniel laughed softly. "I don't think she plans on coming back." "I noticed." For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. Then Daniel broke the silence. "There's a café just outside the campus gate." Amara looked at him cautiously. "I'm not asking you on a date." She raised an eyebrow. "I'm asking if we can have coffee and continue the conversation we never started." She hesitated. Every lesson her mother had taught her echoed in her mind. "Never follow strange men." "Don't trust people easily." "Focus on your education." Reason told her to decline politely. But curiosity... Curiosity whispered louder. "Just coffee?" she asked. Daniel smiled. "Just coffee." She nodded. "Okay." Neither of them knew that the simple word "okay" would become the first decision that quietly altered the course of two lives. As they walked out of the university gate side by side, several students watched them. Among them was a young woman dressed in a fitted red gown. She removed her sunglasses slowly. A bitter smile spread across her lips. "So..." She folded her arms. "He's finally interested in someone else." Her eyes remained fixed on Amara until they disappeared beyond the gate. Then she whispered to herself, "If I can't have Daniel... neither will she." The wind carried her words away. But fate... Fate had already begun writing a story no one could erase. The café was surprisingly quiet. Soft instrumental music floated through the air while the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wrapped itself around every table. Amara hesitated before taking her seat opposite Daniel. She glanced around. "Is this where you usually bring strangers?" Daniel smiled. "No." "So... I'm special?" He laughed softly. "I wouldn't say special." Her smile faded. "I'd say... you're interesting." She rolled her eyes playfully. "That's not much better." "It wasn't meant to be." For the first time that day... She laughed. A genuine laugh. Daniel noticed. She looked even more beautiful when she forgot to hide behind seriousness. "So..." Daniel began. "What course are you studying?" "English and Literary Studies." He nodded. "I should have guessed." "Why?" "You choose your words carefully." She raised an eyebrow. "And you?" "Business Management." "You don't sound like one." "What do business people sound like?" She shrugged. "Too serious." He leaned back. "I can be serious." "I doubt it." "Oh really?" "Really." Their conversation flowed effortlessly. They talked about childhood dreams. Favorite books. Music. University stress. Family. Failures. Dream careers. Hours passed unnoticed. Neither of them wanted to be the first to stand up. Outside the café... Rain suddenly began to fall. Heavy drops hit the pavement. People rushed for shelter. Daniel removed his jacket. "You'll catch a cold." He gently placed it over Amara's shoulders. She looked at him. "You'll be cold." "I'll survive." "But—" "I insist." She smiled. "Thank you." For reasons she couldn't explain... His kindness frightened her. People were rarely this kind without expecting something in return. As they walked back toward the university gate... Daniel finally asked, "Can I see you again?" Amara stopped walking. Every warning from her mother returned. "You're in school to study." "Don't let love distract you." "The wrong person can destroy the right future." She took a deep breath. "I don't think that's a good idea." Daniel looked disappointed. "I understand." "No..." She quickly corrected herself. "It's not because of you." "It's because of me." He nodded slowly. "I won't pressure you." "If fate wants us to meet again..." He smiled gently. "...it will happen." Then he turned and walked away. Amara watched until he disappeared into the crowd. She expected to feel relieved. Instead... She felt empty. That evening... Lara burst into their hostel room without knocking. "Where have you been?" "The library." "Liar." Amara froze. "You weren't in the library." "Who told you?" "I saw you." Amara looked away. "It wasn't what you think." "Oh really?" "You just happened to be drinking coffee with the most handsome alumnus this university has ever produced?" Amara laughed. "It wasn't like that." "So what was it like?" She couldn't answer. Because she didn't know. Across campus... Another pair of eyes had been watching. Vanessa. The lady in the red dress. She sat inside her car, gripping the steering wheel tightly. "So..." She whispered. "You've already started smiling because of her." Her nails dug into her palm. "I warned you never to replace me." Her phone vibrated. She answered immediately. "Did you find out who the girl is?" A voice replied from the other end. "Yes." "Her name is Amara Okafor." "First-year student." "Department of English and Literary Studies." Vanessa smiled. A dangerous smile. "Good." "I like knowing my enemies." She ended the call. Then opened Amara's social media profile. Every picture. Every caption. Every friend. She examined them one after another. Slowly. Patiently. She wasn't looking for admiration. She was looking for weakness. Meanwhile... Daniel arrived home exhausted. He placed his car keys on the table. His older sister, Deborah, looked up from the kitchen. "You look happier than usual." "Do I?" "You've been smiling since you entered." "I have?" She folded her arms. "Who's she?" Daniel laughed. "There isn't anyone." Deborah narrowed her eyes. "I've known you for thirty years." "You only smile like this when someone has entered your heart." Daniel became quiet. He remembered Amara's shy smile. The way she laughed. The way she looked at the rain. The way she refused to rush into anything. Finally, he admitted softly, "I met someone." Deborah smiled. "Be careful." "Not everyone who enters your life comes to stay." Her words lingered in the room long after the conversation ended. Back at the hostel, Amara lay awake. She stared at the ceiling, unable to sleep. She had known Daniel for only one afternoon. Yet it felt as though she had known him for years. She reached for her phone. Opened her contacts. There was no message from him. No missed call. No notification. She sighed. "Good," she whispered to herself. "This is better." But her heart quietly disagreed. Far away, under the dim light of her apartment, Vanessa closed her laptop and picked up a framed photograph of herself and Daniel. She traced his face with her finger. Then she whispered with chilling calm, "If I can't have you..." "...I'll make sure she loses you before she ever truly has you." The photograph slipped from her hand. It hit the floor. The glass shattered. Vanessa smiled. Not because it broke. But because she believed someone else's heart would soon break too. Monday mornings were never kind to university students. The lecture halls buzzed with sleepy conversations as students hurried from one class to another, clutching notebooks and half-finished assignments. Amara adjusted the strap of her bag as she walked toward the Faculty of Arts. "Wait!" She turned. Daniel was jogging toward her, slightly out of breath. "You walk fast." She smiled. "I thought fate was supposed to bring us together again." He laughed. "It did... but fate didn't say I couldn't help." She shook her head. "So, this wasn't planned?" "I promise." He raised both hands innocently. "I came to submit some documents to the Dean's office." "And coincidentally, you appeared." Amara smiled despite herself. "Maybe fate is working overtime." They both laughed. Unknown to them... A camera clicked from behind a nearby tree. Someone had taken their photograph. Later that afternoon... Daniel invited Amara to lunch. This time, she didn't hesitate. They walked across campus together, talking about books and future dreams. "You know," Daniel said, "I've been thinking about something." "What?" "I'd like to sponsor your writing." She stopped walking. "My writing?" "You have talent." "You barely know me." "I know enough." She looked surprised. "You speak like someone who has already read my stories." Daniel smiled. "I haven't." "But I'd like to." For the first time in years... Someone believed in her dream before seeing proof of it. Her heart softened. Maybe... Just maybe... She had been wrong about him. Meanwhile... Inside the student café... Vanessa sat quietly in a corner, sunglasses resting on the table before her. She watched Daniel and Amara through the glass window. Her expression remained calm. Too calm. A young man approached her. "You called?" "Sit down, Kelvin." He obeyed. "What do you need?" Vanessa slid an envelope across the table. Kelvin opened it. His eyes widened. Money. A lot of it. "What do you want me to do?" Vanessa smiled. "I've heard you're popular in the Department of English." "I know almost everyone there." "Good." "I want a rumor." Kelvin frowned. "What kind of rumor?" She leaned closer. "I want the whole campus to believe that Daniel is using Amara." Kelvin looked uncomfortable. "But... what if it isn't true?" Vanessa's smile disappeared. "I didn't ask if it was true." "I asked if you could spread it." Silence. Then... Kelvin slowly picked up the envelope. "I understand." Vanessa leaned back in satisfaction. "The best lies," she whispered, "...are the ones mixed with just enough truth." Two days later... The rumor had spread across campus like wildfire. "Have you heard?" "Daniel dates girls every year." "I heard she's only another victim." "They said he'll dump her before graduation." "I heard she's after his money." "I heard he's only helping her because he feels sorry for her." Every corridor carried a different version of the same lie. Amara pretended not to hear them. But every word pierced her heart. That evening, Lara entered their room angrily. "Tell me the truth." "What truth?" "Are you dating Daniel?" Amara blinked. "No." "Then why is the whole school talking about both of you?" "I don't know." Lara sighed..............
