Orange flames tore through the night sky, painting the mountains in a hellish glow.
Ryder "Grim" Romano didn't wait for another word.
He sprinted toward his Harley, throwing a leg over the bike before the engine roared to life. Behind him, the Iron Reapers moved with military precision. Within seconds, motorcycles thundered through the gates, racing toward the warehouse on the outskirts of Ashridge.
Willow stood frozen on the clubhouse porch, watching the convoy disappear into the darkness.
Rosa stepped beside her and gently rested a hand on her shoulder.
"Come inside, sweetheart."
Willow couldn't take her eyes off the flames.
"He's going to get himself killed."
Rosa smiled sadly.
"No."
"He'll get himself between danger and the people he loves."
---------------------------------------------
The warehouse was already an inferno by the time Ryder arrived.
Volunteer firefighters battled the blaze from every direction as thick black smoke rolled into the night.
Hawk met Ryder near the security gate.
"We accounted for everyone."
Ryder's shoulders relaxed slightly.
"No one was inside?"
"Warehouse was closed an hour before the fire."
Ryder studied the burning building.
"What started it?"
Hawk pointed toward the rear loading dock.
"Fire chief thinks there were multiple ignition points."
"Accelerant?"
"Looks that way."
Ryder's jaw clenched.
This wasn't vandalism.
Someone wanted to send a message.
Sheriff Mason Cole pulled his truck alongside the fire engines and climbed out.
"You got here fast."
"I live five minutes away."
Mason nodded toward the flames.
"My investigators found evidence of forced entry."
"So it wasn't an accident."
"No."
The sheriff lowered his voice.
"And someone cut the security cameras before the fire started."
Professional.
Again.
Ryder was beginning to hate that word.
---------------------------------------------
Back at the clubhouse...
Sleep refused to come.
Willow wandered into the quiet kitchen just after midnight, intending to make tea.
Instead, she found Emma sitting at the table in oversized pajamas, hugging a stuffed rabbit.
"Couldn't sleep?" Willow asked softly.
The little girl shook her head.
"I don't like fires."
Willow sat beside her.
"I don't either."
Emma looked up with wide brown eyes.
"Uncle Ryder always says bad people are scared of good people."
"Does he?"
She nodded.
"He says that's why they try to make everyone afraid."
Willow smiled gently.
"And what do you think?"
Emma considered the question carefully.
"I think Uncle Ryder gets scared too."
Willow blinked.
"He does?"
Emma giggled.
"Everybody gets scared."
"He just doesn't run away."
The innocent observation lingered in Willow's mind long after Emma had gone back to bed.
---------------------------------------------
At three o'clock in the morning, the motorcycles returned.
Their engines echoed across the property before falling silent.
Willow was already waiting on the porch.
Ryder climbed off his Harley, exhaustion etched across his face. Soot streaked his arms, and the smell of smoke clung to his clothes.
"You've been up all night."
"So have you."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Finally, Willow noticed the blood on his knuckles.
"You're hurt."
Ryder glanced down.
"It's not mine."
She frowned.
"What happened?"
"We caught one of them."
Her pulse quickened.
"You caught the arsonist?"
"He didn't start talking."
"But he fought."
"And?"
Ryder's expression remained unreadable.
"He escaped."
Willow wasn't sure whether to believe that was good news or bad.
---------------------------------------------
The following morning, Ashridge woke to headlines about the warehouse fire.
Outside the hospital, reporters had already begun gathering, hoping for details.
Willow pulled into the parking lot and immediately recognized the satellite news vans.
Her stomach dropped.
Not again.
As she stepped from her SUV, microphones appeared almost instantly.
"Dr. Hastings!"
"Is it true you're connected to the biker club involved in last night's fire?"
"Did you spend the night at the Iron Reapers clubhouse?"
"Are you in a relationship with Ryder Romano?"
"Is your past connected to this investigation?"
Willow froze.
The questions came too fast.
Too loud.
Too familiar.
Flashbulbs exploded.
Voices overlapped.
Her breathing became shallow.
Chicago.
It felt exactly like Chicago.
She took a step backward...
...and collided with someone standing behind her.
A strong hand steadied her elbow.
"I've got you."
Ryder.
He had arrived only moments earlier after dropping Rocco off at a follow-up appointment.
Without saying a word, he stepped between Willow and the crowd of reporters.
His towering frame blocked every camera.
Every microphone.
Every accusation.
"No comment," he said evenly.
One reporter pushed forward.
"Mr. Romano, are you hiding Dr. Hastings?"
Ryder's icy gaze locked onto the man.
"I'm protecting her."
Another shouted, "From who?"
Ryder didn't answer.
Instead, he guided Willow toward the hospital entrance, never letting go of her hand.
Only when the doors closed behind them did Willow realize she was still holding on to him.
Embarrassed, she quickly let go.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be."
"I don't usually..."
"I know."
She looked away.
"They make me feel like I'm guilty."
Ryder's voice was calm but firm.
"Listen to me."
She met his eyes.
"You survived what they said about you once."
He squeezed her hand gently before letting it go.
"You'll survive them again."
---------------------------------------------
Hundreds of miles away, inside a luxurious office overlooking the Chicago skyline, Victor Moretti watched footage from the hospital on a large television.
The screen showed Ryder shielding Willow from the reporters.
Victor smiled.
"So..."
"They've become exactly what I wanted."
His assistant frowned.
"You planned this?"
"I needed Romano emotionally invested."
He picked up a crystal glass.
"Now he'll stop thinking like a tactician..."
"...and start acting like a man protecting the woman he loves."
The assistant hesitated.
"And that's a problem?"
Victor's smile widened.
"It makes him predictable."
He turned back to the window overlooking the city.
"Prepare the next move."
"What is it?"
Victor's expression became cold.
"We're going to remind Dr. Willow Hastings why she ran in the first place."
Somewhere in Ashridge, the first domino was about to fall.
And this time...
There would be no turning back
