Chapter One - The Woman who Ran
The first thing Willow Hastings noticed about Ashridge, Montana, was the silence.
No blaring ambulance sirens.
No reporters waiting outside hospital doors.
No whispered accusations following her down polished corridors.
Just the steady rhythm of rain tapping against her windshield as she drove beneath the faded welcome sign announcing the town's population of barely four thousand people.
It was exactly what she'd been searching for.
A place where no one knew her name.
A place where no one cared about the headlines that had destroyed her career, her reputation, and the life she'd spent fifteen years building.
She tightened her grip on the steering wheel, forcing herself to breathe as the memories threatened to surface.
"Renowned Trauma Surgeon Under Investigation."
"Medical Miracle or Medical Monster?"
"Did Dr. Willow Hastings Kill an Innocent Man?"
The headlines had spread faster than wildfire. Within hours, every major news outlet had plastered her face across television screens and social media. It didn't matter that no charges had ever been filed. It didn't matter that the investigation eventually proved she had followed every hospital protocol.
Someone had wanted her life destroyed.
And they'd succeeded.
Her fiancé had believed the headlines before he believed her.
The board she'd dedicated her career to had suspended her without hesitation.
Friends she'd trusted for years stopped returning her calls.
Even her own father—a man who'd raised her to believe integrity meant everything—had looked at her with doubt in his eyes.
That hurt more than anything.
Willow swallowed hard and blinked away the sting behind her eyes.
She'd cried enough.
She'd buried enough pieces of herself already.
The woman who had arrived in Ashridge wasn't the ambitious trauma surgeon who had once thrived under impossible pressure. That version of Willow Hastings had died the day the people she loved chose lies over loyalty.
Now she simply wanted peace.
The small hospital perched at the edge of town came into view.
Ashridge Regional Medical Center.
Sixteen inpatient beds.
One emergency department.
One operating theatre.
A far cry from the Level One Trauma Center in Chicago where she'd spent countless nights saving lives under glaring lights and impossible odds.
She almost laughed.
From helicopters landing on rooftop pads to a hospital with a parking lot barely large enough for twenty cars.
Life certainly had a twisted sense of humor.
She climbed from her SUV, the cool air filling her lungs.
It smelled like pine, rain, and fresh beginnings.
For the first time in over a year, she felt something unfamiliar.
Hope.
"...Dr. Hastings?"
Willow turned to find a gray-haired man in worn scrubs approaching with an easy smile.
"You must be Dr. Michael Turner."
"And you must be the miracle surgeon everyone keeps telling me about."
She almost corrected him.
Instead, she forced a polite smile.
"I'd settle for simply being employed."
Michael chuckled.
"We don't care much about gossip around here."
If only it were that simple.
Inside the hospital, Willow quickly discovered the building was old but alive with purpose. Nurses greeted patients by first name. The receptionist knew every family in town. There were framed photos lining the hallways of babies delivered decades earlier who now had children of their own.
It was...home.
Or at least it could be.
For the first time since everything had fallen apart, Willow allowed herself to imagine a future that wasn't built on defending herself.
She unpacked her office slowly, placing framed certificates into a drawer instead of hanging them on the wall.
Achievements no longer mattered.
Only actions.
As she slipped on her white coat, the emergency pager erupted.
Multi-vehicle collision. Three patients inbound. ETA six minutes.
Every instinct she'd spent years mastering snapped into place.
Fear disappeared.
Doubt vanished.
Training took over.
"Trauma bay one," Willow called confidently as she strode toward the emergency department. "Get blood products ready. Notify radiology. Call anesthesia."
The nurses exchanged surprised glances before springing into action.
There it was.
The surgeon she'd tried so desperately to leave behind.
She wasn't gone after all.
She'd simply been waiting for someone to need her again.
Outside, the wail of approaching sirens echoed through the valley.
Willow pulled on a pair of gloves and looked toward the ambulance entrance.
She had no idea that one of the injured men arriving in those ambulances was connected to the most feared motorcycle club in the state.
Or that saving his life would bring her face-to-face with the man who would change hers forever.
Ryder "Grim" Romano.
She had come to Ashridge to escape her past.
Instead, she was about to collide with a future far more dangerous than anything she'd left behind.
