Chapter Nine - Echoes of Chicago

1043 Words
The emergency department was already overflowing by eight o'clock. A logging truck had overturned on the highway, sending three injured workers to Ashridge Regional Medical Center. For Willow Hastings, instinct replaced fear the moment she pulled on her gloves. "CT scanner is standing by." "Nurse Carter, I need two units of O-negative." "Someone page orthopedics." The emergency department sprang into motion. Outside the trauma bay windows, reporters still lingered near the hospital entrance, hoping to catch another glimpse of the surgeon whose past had suddenly become front-page news once again. Inside, Willow didn't hear them. She only heard her patients. --------------------------------------------- Four hours later... The final patient was wheeled into recovery. Willow removed her bloodstained gloves and let out a slow breath. "You make it look easy." She turned to find Dr. Michael Turner leaning against the doorway. "It never gets easier." "You just make better decisions." He handed her a bottle of water. "I've been doing this for thirty years." "So have I... almost." Michael smiled. "You know what this town needed?" "What?" "Someone who reminds us why we became doctors." Willow looked down at the floor. "I don't feel much like an inspiration." "You should." Before she could answer, Nurse Emily hurried into the room. "Dr. Hastings..." Her face had turned pale. "There's someone here asking for you." "Who?" Emily swallowed. "He says his name is Daniel Brooks." Willow felt as if the air had been sucked from the room. "No." "I'm afraid so." Michael noticed the panic in her eyes. "You know him?" "My ex-fiancé." Michael's expression darkened. "The one who left?" She nodded. "He shouldn't know where I am." --------------------------------------------- Daniel Brooks stood in the hospital lobby wearing an expensive navy suit, a bouquet of white lilies resting casually in one hand. To anyone watching, he looked like the perfect gentleman. Successful. Charming. Polished. Willow knew better. "Hello, Willow." She stopped several feet away. "What are you doing here?" "I wanted to see you." "You've seen me." "You look good." "I've been better." Daniel offered her the flowers. She didn't take them. "I heard about the break-in." "You've been keeping tabs on me?" "I've been worried." She laughed softly. "That's interesting." "Why?" "You weren't worried when my entire life fell apart." His confident smile faltered. "I've made mistakes." "You abandoned me." "I was scared." "So was I." Her voice remained calm. "The difference is..." "I didn't abandon you." Daniel looked genuinely remorseful. "I never stopped loving you." Willow stared at him in disbelief. "You don't get to say that." From across the lobby, Ryder watched the exchange unfold. He had arrived to check on Rocco's follow-up appointment but immediately recognized the tension. Rocco leaned against the wall beside him. "That's him?" Ryder nodded once. "The ex." "I don't like his face." "You don't even know him." "I don't need to." Rocco folded his arms. "He smells like expensive cologne and bad decisions." Despite the situation, Ryder almost smiled. Daniel took another step toward Willow. "I came here because I want another chance." "There isn't one." "You don't mean that." "I absolutely do." "You owe it to us." Willow's eyes flashed. "I don't owe you anything." The lobby fell silent. Patients. Visitors. Nurses. Everyone seemed to sense something important was happening. Daniel lowered his voice. "I know I hurt you." "Hurt me?" She shook her head. "You chose your reputation over me." "I was under pressure." "So was I." "I've regretted it every day." She folded her arms. "Regret doesn't erase betrayal." For the first time, Daniel had no answer. Ryder had heard enough. He walked calmly across the lobby until he stopped beside Willow. "You okay?" She looked up at him. The simple question nearly broke her heart. Because Daniel hadn't asked that question once. Not during the investigation. Not after the headlines. Not today. "Yes." Ryder nodded. "Good." Only then did he turn toward Daniel. "You bothering the doctor?" Daniel straightened. "And you are?" "Ryder Romano." Recognition flashed across Daniel's face. "The biker." "The man standing beside her." Daniel forced a polite smile. "This is a private conversation." Ryder remained perfectly calm. "Doesn't look private anymore." Daniel's jaw tightened. "I'm trying to fix my relationship." Ryder glanced at Willow. "Is that what she's trying to do?" Willow answered without hesitation. "No." Ryder looked back at Daniel. "There's your answer." For a long moment, neither man spoke. Then Daniel stepped closer. "I don't know what you've heard about me..." "I don't care." "...but Willow deserves better than a motorcycle club." Ryder's expression never changed. "She deserves people who stay." The words landed like a punch. Daniel's face drained of color. Because he knew they were true. Embarrassed and defeated, Daniel placed the bouquet on a nearby chair. "I'll give you some time." Willow didn't respond. He looked at her one final time before walking out of the hospital. As the automatic doors closed behind him, Willow released a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. "You didn't have to do that," she said quietly. Ryder shrugged. "I know." "Then why did you?" He met her eyes. "Because nobody gets to make you feel alone while I'm standing beside you." Willow felt tears sting her eyes once again. She quickly blinked them away. "You always know the right thing to say?" "No." A faint smile tugged at his lips. "I usually say too little." She laughed softly. "I noticed." --------------------------------------------- Later that evening, Daniel sat alone in his rental car parked on a hill overlooking Ashridge. His phone buzzed. A blocked number. He answered cautiously. "Hello?" A calm, unfamiliar voice spoke. "You found Dr. Hastings." Daniel frowned. "Who is this?" "I have a proposal." "I'm not interested." "You will be." The caller paused. "You still want Willow back, don't you?" Daniel's silence was all the answer the man needed. "Then listen carefully..." --------------------------------------------- Across town, Willow stood on the clubhouse porch watching the sun disappear behind the mountains. For the first time in a long while, she felt safe. She didn't realize that someone else had just entered the game. And unlike Victor Moretti... Daniel Brooks wasn't driven by power. He was driven by guilt. Sometimes, guilt made people do dangerous things. And sometimes... It made them easy to manipulate.
