Chapter Two - Ryder "Grim" Romano

948 Words
The roar of motorcycles shattered the quiet afternoon. One after another, matte-black Harleys rolled into the hospital parking lot like a storm gathering on the horizon. Chrome gleamed beneath the overcast sky as leather-clad riders dismounted in perfect silence, their heavy boots striking the pavement with deliberate purpose. Every head turned. Nurses froze at the windows. Visitors instinctively stepped aside. The patch on the back of every leather cut said the same thing. IRON REAPERS MC At the center of them all stood Ryder "Grim" Romano. Six-foot-six. Built like a heavyweight fighter with broad shoulders and tattooed arms that disappeared beneath the sleeves of his black leather vest. His dark hair was cropped short, his jaw shadowed with a perfectly kept beard, and his ice-blue eyes carried the kind of cold that came from years of violence and loss. He didn't have to raise his voice. His presence alone commanded the room. The vice president of the Iron Reapers Motorcycle Club wasn't just respected. He was feared. Behind him, a dozen brothers waited for his next move. One nod. That was all it took. "Stay here," Ryder ordered. The men obeyed without question. He climbed the hospital steps two at a time, his expression carved from stone. Rocco "Rogue" Santoro wasn't just another club brother. He'd been family since they were teenagers. Brothers weren't born. They were chosen. And if anyone had hurt Rogue... God help them. The automatic doors slid open. Every conversation inside the emergency department died instantly. The receptionist looked up, her practiced smile disappearing the moment she saw him. "C-can I help you?" "My brother came in from the highway accident." His deep voice was calm, but there was steel beneath every word. "Rocco Santoro." She nervously typed his name into the computer. "He's currently in surgery." Ryder's jaw tightened. "Surgery?" "Yes, sir." "Who is operating?" The woman glanced toward the operating theatres. "Dr. Willow Hastings." He nodded once before turning toward the double doors leading deeper into the hospital. "I'm sorry, you can't go back there." His boots stopped. Slowly, he looked over his shoulder. The receptionist immediately regretted speaking. "I wasn't asking." Before she could respond, two hospital security officers hurried over. "Sir," one began cautiously, "hospital policy says you'll need to remain in the waiting area." Ryder stared at him for several long seconds. Then a faint smirk tugged at one corner of his mouth. "You planning on stopping me?" Neither guard answered. Smart men. Before the situation could escalate, another voice echoed through the corridor. "Mr. Romano?" A gray-haired doctor approached with measured confidence. "I'm Dr. Michael Turner." Ryder turned his attention toward him. "How bad?" "Your friend suffered multiple fractures, internal bleeding, and a collapsed lung after laying down his motorcycle to avoid a family whose vehicle crossed into his lane." Ryder's eyes darkened. "He protected them." "He did." Silence settled between them. "He would've died if the ambulance had arrived five minutes later," Dr. Turner continued. "Fortunately, Dr. Hastings was already here." Ryder glanced toward the operating theatre doors. "Can she save him?" Dr. Turner didn't hesitate. "If anyone can..." "...it's her." For the first time since arriving, Ryder allowed himself to breathe. Barely. Across the corridor, the operating theatre light still burned bright. Hours passed. Club members silently filled the waiting room, refusing food, refusing coffee, refusing to leave. No one spoke much. They didn't need to. The Iron Reapers waited together. As family always did. Finally... The operating theatre doors opened. A woman stepped into the corridor, pulling off her surgical cap. Loose strands of chestnut hair escaped around her face, damp with perspiration. Her blue-green eyes carried the exhaustion only surgeons understood, yet her posture remained steady, confident. She looked far younger than Ryder expected. Until she spoke. "The surgery was successful." The collective breath of every biker in the room released at once. "He's stable," she continued. "The next twenty-four hours are critical, but I expect him to make a full recovery." Relief washed across Ryder's features before disappearing just as quickly. He stepped toward her. Towering over almost everyone he'd ever met, he still found himself careful not to invade her space. "You saved his life." Willow met his icy gaze without flinching. "I did my job." Most people looked away when Ryder Romano stared at them. She didn't. Interesting. "You've got guts, Doctor." A hint of a smile touched her lips. "I work in trauma surgery." "I've stitched together people a lot scarier than you." For the first time in years... Ryder laughed. A deep, genuine laugh that surprised even his own brothers. Willow blinked. She hadn't expected that. Neither had he. The moment lasted only seconds before reality returned. "There'll be paperwork," Willow said professionally. "Only immediate family can visit until he's awake." Ryder nodded. "He doesn't have blood family." She frowned. "He has us." Willow looked beyond him at the men waiting silently in leather cuts, every one of them carrying concern rather than menace. For a fleeting moment, she saw something unexpected. Not outlaws. Not criminals. Just a family terrified of losing one of their own. She couldn't explain why, but something about Ryder Romano unsettled her—not because he looked dangerous... But because behind those cold blue eyes was a loyalty so fierce it bordered on devotion. It was the kind of loyalty she'd once believed existed. Until betrayal taught her otherwise. As Ryder watched her disappear back through the theatre doors, one thought settled heavily in his mind. Dr. Willow Hastings wasn't anything like the people he'd expected to find in a hospital. And somehow, he knew this wouldn't be the last time their paths crossed.
