Chapter Three - Unfinished Business

968 Words
The first rays of dawn spilled across the mountains, casting a golden glow over Ashridge Regional Medical Center. Inside, the hospital was already awake. Monitors beeped. Phones rang. Coffee brewed. For Dr. Willow Hastings, it was just another morning. She stood outside the ICU, reviewing Rocco Santoro's overnight chart. His vitals had stabilized, the bleeding had stopped, and his oxygen levels had improved dramatically. It was the kind of progress every trauma surgeon hoped to see after a difficult operation. "He's lucky," Dr. Michael Turner said, joining her. Willow shook her head. "No. He's alive because he knew exactly how to lay his bike down. If he'd hit that SUV head-on, we'd be having a very different conversation." Michael folded his arms. "He's got a lot of people praying for him." Willow glanced toward the waiting room. The bikers hadn't left. Some had slept sitting upright in plastic chairs. Others stood outside in the cold, drinking black coffee from paper cups. They took turns checking on each other, speaking quietly, making sure everyone had eaten. It wasn't what she'd expected. The media had painted motorcycle clubs as violent criminals. Yet all she saw was unwavering loyalty. Especially from Ryder Romano. He hadn't moved far from the ICU doors all night. Whenever someone asked for an update, they asked him first. Whenever a decision needed making, they looked to him. Leadership wasn't something he demanded. It was something he carried naturally. Willow pushed the thought away. She wasn't here to admire anyone. She was here to heal patients. --------------------------------------------- Across town... Ryder finally pulled into the Iron Reapers clubhouse. The old brick building sat on the edge of the forest, surrounded by motorcycles and pickup trucks. It wasn't flashy. It didn't need to be. Inside those walls lived generations of loyalty, sacrifice, and brotherhood. As he stepped through the front doors, conversations stopped. Every eye landed on him. "How's Rogue?" one of the younger members asked. "Still unconscious," Ryder answered. "But he's gonna make it." Relief spread through the room. One less funeral. One less brother buried. Ryder walked straight into church—the members-only meeting room—and dropped a thick file onto the table. "Tell me about the accident." The club's road captain leaned forward. "Witnesses say an SUV crossed the center line. Rogue swerved to miss a family with two kids. They weren't so lucky SUV clipped them." "Driver?" "Missing." Ryder's expression hardened. "They ran?" A nod. "Cops found the SUV abandoned five miles away." Silence settled over the room. Ryder didn't believe in coincidences. Neither did anyone else sitting around the table. "Find the driver," he said. "If it was an accident..." He paused. "...fine." "But if someone forced Rogue off that road..." The unfinished sentence lingered in the air. Every man understood what it meant. Justice. Iron Reaper style. --------------------------------------------- Back at the hospital... Willow finally sat down long enough to drink the coffee she'd poured nearly an hour earlier. It was stone cold. Again. She smiled to herself. Some things never changed. A knock sounded against her office door. "Come in." The door opened. Ryder Romano filled the doorway. He'd traded his leather vest for a fitted black T-shirt that somehow made him look even more imposing. Tattoos disappeared beneath the sleeves, while a faded scar ran along the side of his neck. He looked less like an outlaw... And more like a soldier who'd survived too many wars. "I wanted to thank you properly." Willow leaned back in her chair. "You already did." "I don't like unpaid debts." She folded her arms. "You don't owe me anything." "I owe you my brother's life." Their eyes locked. For several seconds, neither spoke. Finally, Willow broke the silence. "He's not your brother." Ryder smiled faintly. "Blood doesn't make family." The words struck deeper than he could have known. Because Willow's own blood family had abandoned her the moment things became difficult. She looked away first. "I'll be checking on Rocco in about an hour." "I'll stay out of your way." "I'd appreciate that." He nodded. Then, surprisingly... "I read about you." Willow froze. Her pulse quickened. Of course he had. Everyone eventually did. The headlines. The investigation. The whispers. "I don't believe everything I read," Ryder continued. She laughed bitterly. "Most people do." "I don't." "Why?" His answer came without hesitation. "Because when someone saves a man's life after fourteen straight hours on their feet..." He held her gaze. "...that tells me more about their character than a hundred headlines." Willow didn't know what to say. No one had offered her the benefit of the doubt in over a year. Not her colleagues. Not her fiancé. Not even her own father. Yet somehow... A man the world called dangerous had shown her more trust than anyone else ever had. Ryder gave a respectful nod before turning toward the door. "I won't keep you, Doctor." "Ryder." He stopped. She surprised herself. "You can call me Willow." A slow smile spread across his face. The first genuine one she'd seen. "Take care, Willow." "You too... Grim." He looked back, one eyebrow raised. "You know my road name." "I overheard one of your club brothers." "It suits me." "It does." With that, he disappeared into the hallway. Willow watched the door close, confused by the unfamiliar flutter in her chest. She'd spent months building walls around herself. She wasn't about to let anyone tear them down. Least of all a biker with haunted blue eyes. Outside, Ryder climbed onto his motorcycle. As the engine rumbled to life, his phone vibrated. A single text message flashed across the screen. WE FOUND THE SUV. IT WASN'T AN ACCIDENT. Ryder's smile vanished. Someone had tried to kill Rocco. And whoever they were... Had just declared war with the Iron Reapers.
