SHADOW OF LAGOS
Episode 1: "Adeyemi's Struggle" Adeyemi stepped out of his cramped, makeshift house in Ajegunle, the sounds of generators humming and vendors hawking their wares filling the air. He lived with his mom and younger siblings in a community where "survival" was a daily fight. The streets were narrow, lined with shanties and patched-up stalls, and the smell of rubbish and exhaust fumes lingered like a bad habit. Growing up in this part of Lagos, Adeyemi saw friends drop out of school, get into trouble, or worse. Some joined the ranks of the "area boys," ruling the night with intimidation and petty crime. Others tried to escape, but ended up stuck in menial jobs just to survive. His mom worked multiple jobs – selling vegetables at the market, washing clothes for neighbors, and cooking for a local canteen – just to keep food on the table and pay the rent. With no safety net, Adeyemi knew he had to hustle harder. At 22, he was the oldest, and his siblings looked up to him. He spent most days scouting for odd jobs, from carrying goods at the market to helping mechanics in the garage down the road. The pay was meager, but it was something. Tonight, he had a hunch something was off. The area was restless. Rumors of a crackdown by the authorities had everyone on edge. Tensions were high, and Adeyemi's instincts told him to lay low. He glanced at his phone – 8 PM – and quickened his pace home. His mom would be worried. As he turned a corner, he heard the rumble of a generator going full blast at a nearby chop shop. Music blared, and a group of rowdy guys were drinking and laughing. Adeyemi nodded at them, keeping his distance. No need to get mixed up in anything tonight. He slipped into the house, greeted by his anxious mom. "You late, Adeyemi. What's happening outside?" she asked, eyes searching. "Nothing, Mama. Just be calm," he said, trying to reassure her. "I'll stay in tonight." The night wore on, with Adeyemi making plans in his head. He needed a way out – for him and his family. But for now, surviving Ajegunle was the game.
