Chapter 4

864 Words
Odessa's POV Dave's smug grin made me want to rip it off, leaving only sorrow in his eyes. I sucked down the strong urge that was burning inside me. That was just a joyful thought. There was no way I could fight him right now, not with wolves all around me ready to tear me apart if they were told to. That's what I did. I glared. "This is what all the girls who break up with you do?" No matter how tense things were between us, my words cut right through them. He clenched his teeth and flared his nostrils like a bull about to charge. Okay. I tried to get close to him. It was important to me that he felt helpless like I did. But I went too far. He said in a low, scary voice, "You'll find out." With a snap of his hands at his sides and a heel turn, he stormed out the door, slamming it shut behind him. That was the sound of a lock being closed, a sharp click that shook the room. Panic took over me. I slammed the door handle as I ran to it. Nothing. I was stuck. As my breath increased, the truth of my situation hit me like a ton of bricks. This isn't supposed to happen. This wasn't just Dave's sick power play; it was bigger than that. It was more thoughtfully planned. As I paced the room, my body felt tense, ready to snap. How did I get here? I had been free for hours, taking the first breath of a new life. Now I was locked up like a dog waiting to be killed. I then heard it. Steps. Slow and steady. The door opened with a clunk after the lock was turned. The room felt like it had no air flow when Mike Blackwood walked in. The first. Be my Alpha. A killer dressed up as a person. Everything about him screamed power, from the way he walked to the way his sharp, judging eyes looked happy. What he could do had been shown to me, and stories about him had been told in the dark. He wasn't kind. Terrible. I was in his power right now. "Is everything okay inside?" Even though his voice sounded almost careless, I knew he was interested in what I had to say. I didn't say anything. He leaned against the doorframe and crossed his arms over his big chest. "I guess you're not sure why you're here." Something in my jaw twitched. I wouldn't let him enjoy the pleasure of hearing me ask. He didn't mind my quiet, though. He only smiled, but his teeth were real and his threats were hidden. He said in a low voice, "Well, Dave told us about your little... disagreement." What a jerk. I clenched my hands together. I had broken up with Dave, that was it. We hadn't even linked with a mate yet. This was crazy. Mike went on, his voice as smooth as silk. "You didn't seem too interested in being a part of this family." Or even this pack.” It got too thick to breathe. I forced myself to stand tall, even though I felt really scared. "That's good news for you," he said, "because you won't be from now on." I had a shortness of breath. "I'm being sent away?" Mike laughed, but the sound was dark and not funny. "Like we'd do something so mean to you." I felt a little better for a second, but then his next words hit me like a death sentence. "No, you're going to be given to someone else." As an act of peace. The room turned around. My knees were about to give out. "Are you selling what?" My voice was so hoarse that it was barely above a whisper. "There you go again." Mike snapped his tongue and shook his head to act like he was upset. "Always being so gloomy. Odessa, you're a gift. A sacrifice that had to be made for the pack's sake. Giving up. I couldn't say anything. Not breathing. What he just said was so hard for me to understand that I stood there still. I wasn't being sent away. I was given up like a pawn in a game I didn't agree to play. I pushed my dry lips to move. "Who?" Mike smiled, as if my pain made him laugh. "Is it that important?" Yes. It was the most important thing. My fate was out of my hands as soon as I walked into this room, though. Mike walked toward the door, but stopped and looked back over his shoulder at me. "You know, what you're doing is really great." His smile was full of evil. "Thank you for what you did." The door shut behind him. Once more, the lock opened. My whole world fell apart right then. I fell to the cold floor and wrapped my arms around myself. My breath came in short, shaky bursts. There's no way this is real. That was not possible. This wasn't what I had in mind when I thought of a new start.
