'What the hell?' I thought. What was her problem? I tried searching for answers from my wolf, but suddenly he was nowhere to be found once Sage was gone. He seemed angry with me, but I didn't know what I had done. Seeing Maisie grab her things and walk up the path made me uneasy. I hated it when she took off on her own, even if I knew she could protect herself. I stretched my arms forward and swam back through the clear greenish-blue water. "What did you do this time, Bell?" Niyla asked, looking irritated with me. "I opened my mouth." My mood shifted, I didn't want to be around anyone until I figured out what was happening with Maisie. She had been acting weird for a while now, even our wolves lock us out when they are conversing with each other.
A few hours passed, and I made it back home, showered, and hoped that my best friend was still going to meet me for a run. It had been too long since we had some time just for us. There were a lot of things I wanted to talk to her about, but gods, how do you bring up that you've known each other since birth, and you're fated to spend eternity together? I wonder if she knew.
I felt Volkro stirring, practically itching to break out of my skin. I tried to calm him. 'Can you try to relax?' I asked him. His voice was all I could hear in my head. 'Don't chicken out this time like a scared sheep' He was annoying, to say the least, he hated when I slept with other women, he hated every other female wolf but Sage. I had always been so curious about that connection when we were teenagers, but when I turned eighteen it all made sense. Yet, Maisie never brought it up or acted as though she felt or knew of the bond. 'They should be OURS, and no one else should have ever touched them, Bellamy.' I hated when he was right, my blood boiled at the thought of another male touching her, someone else pleasing her. I shook my head, stuffed my phone in my pocket, and walked out the door of my room. It was a nice-sized house behind the alpha's home. I was allowed a room in the family wing at the main house, but I chose to stay with the training warriors of the pack.
Howling came from different directions of the pack land. It was a crescent moon, it was only a week away from being full, which was the night of my birthday. Our birthday. My legs moved along the dirt paths that connected the different areas of the land. Everyone from our clan lived on the acres we owned. When we needed to shop we made our way into town, which is rare since everything we need to survive is right here. I searched around the faces, only looking for one. I would know that long burgundy hair and thick waist anywhere. Unfortunately, when I got to the front of the main house, the only voice I heard was Kennedy. I felt my eyes roll without even meaning to allow it. Turning around, I smiled at her, nothing more. "Do you want to go for a run?" She asked me. I felt Volkro growl within my chest warning me if I chose to say yes. I knew my answer, I only wanted to be around Maisie right now, we had things we needed to speak about. "No." I had nothing else to add as I turned around, and her hand caught my wrist. I pulled it away from her, "Did I not say no?" I snapped at her. She never listened, she was clingy and everything that Maisie wasn't.
"Oh please, you know I'm better than that wannabe alpha's daughter!" She retorted. My blood boiled, I could feel Volkro forcing himself out when my fingernails grew into claws, and my eyes glazed over when the face of terror filled her. A growl filled my chest, I was barely in control of keeping my wolf from biting her head off. "Do not ever insult or speak of the alpha's daughter, or it will be the last thing that you do." My eyes were fixated on her, the blonde began taking a few steps back. My chest was rising up and down, heavily feeling my heart racing. "Bell?" It was like a wave of calmness rushed over me at once with only a small light tone.
I spun around and saw her face. I felt both my wolf and myself relax back into our normal state. Her smile lit up the room, even if we were technically outside. 'Mate.' My wolf said over and over, he began jumbling my thoughts, and I was standing there staring at her. A lightly tanned plump face looked up at me, her cheeks were light pink with blush. I couldn't help but smile. "Ready?" I asked her, handing her my phone to toss with hers so we didn't lose them when we shifted. "Yes, but I'm still mad at you." She was always quick on her feet, and she never let a grudge go against me.
At the click of the door being shut, we were beelining for the trees. Once we hit the treeline, I felt my wolf take over and shift. Its giant paws hit the earth's ground, digging its claws into the cool dirt. Volkro shook his head, shaking out his fur, admiring the she-wolf in front of her. The color of her coat was unlike any color of the pack, she was gray, almost like ash from a fire. The tips of her ears turned black, and I could feel the love Volkro had as we ran through trees and across the lake streams.
'Sage, my you are beautiful.' Volkro and Sage moved around each other, staring, licking. I knew we could feel the tension building between the two. 'We need to tell them.' My wolf said to me. I agreed. He allowed me to take over and shift back to my human form. I stood there naked in front of her, it wasn't an unusual thing to see when shifting back from our beasts. Reaching inside the bag that was hidden in our spot, I slipped on a pair of gym shorts and held a big shirt for her in my hand while I watched her wolf recede and her human form returned. "I miss doing this." She nodded, agreeing.
"Maisie... there's something that I need to tell you that we need to talk about," I spoke softly, it was time I told her that we both knew about the connection. About the mate bond. I took a step towards her, reaching for her hand. I intertwined my fingers with hers. They fit perfectly together, just like the moon goddess intended. My other hand slipped between the nape of her neck, allowing my fingers to tangle in her long hair. My heart rate fastened, and I felt hers pick up as well the closer we got. The familiar touch of her was everything I needed. I knew at that moment that I would die trying to give her the entire world.
Her brown eyes fluttered up at me, gods she was amazing. "Have you ever...felt anything? Between us?" I asked her, I wasn't sure if I should flat out say we were mates, but I felt easing into the conversation was the best. "Of course I have, I mean you're my best friend, you were my first kiss, first everything Bellamy..." She began speaking, I listened intently. "I've been stuck on you for years, why do you think I get pissed off any time I hear you mention any other female?" I chuckled softly, I guess I should have known the signs of jealousy, but she did it with such grace.
"I want this, with you, in this life, and every life after this, because I..." There was a wave of heat between us, but suddenly cold surged through as I was sent flying backward. All I heard was her scream. My eyes opened, and I saw it, a creature that was forbidden to cross into our land. I sprang into action, Volkro taking over as we chased them. I could feel her pain surging down the mate bond as the thing latched onto her wrist with force. "MAISIE!!!!" I screamed as my wolf snarled before we were slammed into a nest of trees. When I looked up, they were gone.
