The Rite of the Fenris

The air in the penthouse crackled with static, the kind that makes your hair stand on end. Jax’s face was drained of color, his usual swagger replaced by grim anxiety. "The Rite of the Fenris?" Elena repeated, her voice shaking. She clutched the sheets to her chest, suddenly feeling incredibly vulnerable despite the wolf blood humming under her skin. "What is that?" Damien’s expression darkened, his jaw tightening until the muscle jumped. "It's the oldest and bloodiest tradition of our kind," he growled, standing up and grabbing his leather jacket from the chair. "It's a fight to the death. No weapons, no rules. The winner takes the title of Alpha and total control of the pack. The loser is killed." He turned to her, his eyes fierce. "Silas thinks you're an abomination because you're a hybrid. He thinks you'll distract me, make me weak. He wants the title, Elena. And he's willing to kill me to get it." Jax stepped forward, looking at Elena with a mix of pity and warning. "You need to stay here, Boss. This is between him and me. The Enforcer and the Alpha. You don't belong in the pit." "I'm not staying here," Damien said, his voice hard as steel. He walked over to Elena and pulled her into his arms, his grip possessive and desperate. "I need my Luna with me. She needs to see this." He kissed her hard, a bruising, claiming kiss that tasted of blood and steel. "Stay close. Don't let go of my hand. If I fall, you run." He pulled away, his face a mask of grim determination. "Jax, go to the arena. Tell the pack to gather. I'm going to end this." Damien led Elena out of the penthouse and back down to the garage. The ride to the clubhouse was a blur of speed and danger. Elena clung to his back, her heart hammering against her ribs. She could feel the tension radiating off him, a physical weight that pressed against her. They arrived at the clubhouse to a scene of pandemonium. The main hall was packed with men, all wearing leather and denim, their eyes gleaming with anticipation. The air was thick with the smell of adrenaline and fear. They were chanting Silas's name, a guttural, rhythmic roar that shook the floorboards. Damien pushed through the crowd, Elena right behind him. The men parted for them, their eyes darting between Elena and Damien, their expressions a mix of awe and fear. Elena felt like a queen being led to her execution. She was the Luna, the mate of the Alpha, but she was also a target. She was a walking reminder of Silas's failure. They reached the back of the room, where a heavy steel door stood open. Beyond it was the underground arena. It was a pit, a dirt floor surrounded by stone walls, illuminated by torches and harsh lights. In the center of the arena stood Silas, his arms crossed over his chest, a smirk playing on his lips. Silas looked different from Damien. He was taller, broader, and he looked more like a monster than a man. His eyes were pitch black, his skin pale and stretched tight over his bones. He was a Beta, but he looked more like a wolf than Damien. Elena stared at him, her heart pounding. Silas looked at her, his eyes narrowing. He stepped forward, a sneer on his face. "So, this is the human I've heard so much about," he said, his voice dripping with disdain. "The pet. The toy." He looked at Damien. "She's not even a wolf, Blackwood. How can she be a Luna? She's weak. She's fragile. She's going to be a liability in the fight." Damien didn't answer. He just stepped forward, his eyes blazing. "She's with me. And she's the reason I'm going to win." Silas laughed, a harsh, barking sound. "You think you can win with a human by your side? You're delusional. The Rite of the Fenris is for wolves only. You're going to die, Blackwood. And then, I'll take her. I'll break her just like I broke your spirit." Damien’s eyes narrowed. "Try it." Silas stepped into the arena, the dirt crunching under his boots. He looked at Elena, his eyes dark and hungry. "Stay out of my way, human. Or I'll kill you too." Elena looked at Damien, pleading for him to protect her. Damien’s face was cold, his expression unreadable. He was going into battle, and he didn't have time to comfort her. He turned to Jax. "Jax, take Elena to the VIP booth. Watch her. If I fall, you get her out of here." Jax nodded, his face grim. "I'll keep her safe, Boss. I promise." Damien walked into the arena, his head held high. Silas followed, his movements fluid and predatory. The crowd roared, a sea of noise that drowned out Elena's scream. Elena grabbed Jax's arm, her nails digging into his skin. "Don't let him die," she whispered. "Please." Jax looked at her, his eyes softening. "I won't," he said, his voice low and reassuring. "He's the strongest wolf I've ever known. He'll win." They watched from the VIP booth, high above the arena. Elena gripped the railing, her knuckles white. She could see Damien and Silas circling each other. They moved like two predators, their eyes locked on each other's throats. The air was thick with tension, the smell of blood and sweat filling the room. The fight began. Damien lunged first, his fist connecting with Silas's jaw. The sound was sickeningly loud. Silas stumbled back, but he recovered quickly. He countered with a kick to Damien's stomach, sending him flying across the dirt floor. Damien rolled with the impact, absorbing the blow. He scrambled to his feet, his eyes blazing. He roared, a sound that shook the arena. He charged at Silas, his fist raised high. Silas caught Damien's fist, his grip like iron. He twisted Damien's arm, forcing him to the ground. He straddled Damien's chest, his hands around his neck. He began to squeeze, his eyes dark and hungry. Damien's face turned red, his eyes bulging. He clawed at Silas's hands, but he couldn't break the grip. He was running out of air. Elena screamed, her voice hoarse. "Damien! Let him go!" Jax placed a hand on her shoulder, his grip tight. "Stay back, Elena. This is it." Silas smiled, his eyes dark. "Give up, Blackwood. You're too weak. You're going to die. And I'll take your little human pet." Damien's eyes were unfocused, his vision blurring. He felt the end approaching. He was going to die, and he would leave Elena all alone. The thought was a cold, hard fact. Just as Silas was about to deliver the final blow, Jax stepped in. He leaped over the railing and dropped into the arena. He tackled Silas off Damien, sending them both tumbling into the dirt. Jax rolled with the impact, but Silas was faster. He kicked Jax in the chest, sending him flying across the room. Silas turned his attention back to Damien, his eyes dark. He stood up, dusting himself off. "The Enforcer is out," he sneered. "Now, back to business." He lunged at Damien, his fist raised high. Damien rolled to the side, avoiding the blow. He scrambled to his mother's feet, his eyes blazing. He charged at Silas, his fist raised high. Damien landed a heavy blow to Silas's face. The sound was sickeningly loud. Silas stumbled back, the blow knocking out a tooth. Silas's eyes widened in shock. "You hit me?" he snarled. "You'll pay for that." He lunged at Damien, his fist raised high. Damien parried, but Silas was stronger. He slammed Damien into the fight. The two men wrestled in the dirt, their bodies crashing into each other, their grunts and groans filling the silence of the arena. Elena watched, her heart pounding. She saw Damien's face contort in pain, his eyes filled with rage. He was fighting for his life, and he was losing. Suddenly, the ground shook. The air filled with a low, guttural growl. Elena looked down, and her breath hitched. Damien was changing. His bones were cracking, his body distorting. He was shifting. He grew larger, his fur sprouting from his skin, his eyes turning a brilliant, glowing blue. He was a massive wolf, the size of a grizzly bear, his fur black as night, his eyes burning with a feral light. Silas shifted too. He was a large wolf, but his fur was grey, his eyes pitch black. He was a Beta wolf, but he looked more like a wolf than Damien. The two wolves circled each other in the arena, their eyes locked on.
