The Eyes In The Dark
I always knew my father’s secrets would catch up to me. I just never thought they’d come dressed in a tailored black suit with blood on the cuffs—and eyes that burned through me like fire. It started on a Thursday. The night the power went out. The Romano estate sat at the edge of the city, perched on acres of land no one ever wandered into, and no one ever left without permission. My father’s rules were clear: stay inside after dark, don’t talk to strangers, and never, under any circumstances, mention his name outside these walls. He said it was for my safety. I used to believe him. I was in the library that night, curled up in my usual spot—an oversized armchair near the window. Rain tapped softly against the glass as thunder rolled in the distance. The fire crackled beside me, casting long shadows across the walls. I was halfway through a book I wasn’t even reading when the lights flickered—once, twice—then went out completely. I sat still for a moment, waiting for the backup generator to kick in. It didn’t. A strange silence fell over the mansion. No hum of electricity. No footsteps in the hallway. Even the storm outside seemed to pause. “Marcos?” I called out to the guard usually stationed outside the library door. No answer. My heart began to race. I stood slowly, setting the book aside. Something felt… off. The air felt heavier, like the room itself was holding its breath. And then I felt it—eyes on me. I turned toward the fireplace. A man stood there, half in shadow, completely still. Panic surged through me. “Who—who are you?” He stepped forward, unbothered by my fear. “No need to scream, Elena.” My blood ran cold. He knew my name. Even in the dim light, I could make out the sharp cut of his jaw, the way his suit clung to him like it had been stitched onto his skin. He was tall, commanding—his presence devouring the room. But it was his eyes that froze me. Ice-gray. Unblinking. Dangerous. “I said, who are you?” I tried again, backing away until my legs hit the edge of the couch. He didn’t stop walking toward me. “I’m someone your father has been trying to hide you from,” he said smoothly. “But secrets have a way of slipping through locked doors.” I swallowed hard. “If you’re here for him, he’s not—” “I’m not here for him.” He cut me off. His voice was calm, deep, with an edge of violence he didn’t bother to hide. “I’m here for you.” I stared at him, confused. “What?” He was in front of me now, towering over me with the kind of confidence that came from knowing no one would dare stop him. “Dominic Moretti,” he said, like his name was supposed to mean something. And it did. I’d heard of him. The name passed around in whispers during expensive dinners and late-night arguments. The Moretti family was old money, old power—mafia, if you believed the rumors. And Dominic… he was the devil they all feared. My knees nearly gave out. “You shouldn’t be here,” I whispered. He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “And yet, here I am.” I tried to move past him, but his hand shot out, catching my wrist in a grip that was firm, but not painful. “You’ve been hidden long enough,” he said. “Your father can’t protect you anymore.” “I don’t need protection,” I snapped, trying to sound stronger than I felt. He leaned in, his voice brushing against my ear like a ghost. “That’s where you’re wrong, princess. In my world, everyone needs protection. Especially the things I want.” I looked up at him, heart slamming against my ribs. “And what exactly do you want?” His eyes darkened. “You.” One word. Soft. Simple. Terrifying. “I’ve been watching you,” he continued. “For months. The way you sneak out onto the balcony when you think no one’s looking. The way you smile when you’re alone. The way you hate this cage your father keeps you in.” My breath caught in my throat. He’d been watching me? “Why?” I asked, voice barely above a whisper. “Because you’re the only thing in this filthy world that’s still pure,” he said. “And I ruin everything I touch.” I shook my head. “Then stay away from me.” He tilted his head, studying me like I was already his. “I can’t.” Then, without warning, he let go of my wrist and turned toward the door. “I’ll give you tonight to think, Elena,” he said. “But know this—your life changed the moment I stepped into this room.” With that, he disappeared into the darkness, leaving behind the scent of danger and something else I couldn’t name. My hands were still shaking as I collapsed onto the chair. What the hell just happened? And why… why did part of me want to see him again?
