Chapter One – The Stranger in the Woods
The night air was heavy with the scent of pine and rain soaked earth. Lila pressed deeper into the woods, her boots crunching softly against the fallen leaves. She loved this place, even when the shadows pressed in and the silence made her pulse quicken. Here, she could breatheaway from the noise of the village, away from the expectations of everyone who thought they knew her. She didn’t see the wolf at first. Her lantern flickered, a sudden gust of wind rattling through the trees. That’s when her eyes caught the faint gleam of silver fur between the branches. She froze. Wolves were rare this far south, but the stories still lived in whispers giant creatures, more shadow than flesh, with eyes that could strip your soul bare. And yet, when the beast stepped forward, her fear melted into something else. Its gaze wasn’t wild or hungry. It was knowing. The wolf was enormous, his coat dark as midnight except for the streak of silver running along his spine. His amber eyes fixed on her with a heat that made her chest tighten. For a moment, Lila swore the world itself held its breath. Then the wolf shifted. Before her stood a man, tall, broad-shouldered, with hair as black as ink and those same burning amber eyes. His shirt clung to him from the rain, outlining every line of muscle, but what unsettled her most was the way he looked at her—like he had been searching for her, like she already belonged to him. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said, his voice deep, edged with command. Lila’s throat went dry. “Neither should you. Unless…” she hesitated, “you are the legend.” He smiled, a slow, dangerous curve. “Legend, curse, alpha… call it what you like. But you” His gaze dropped to her lips, lingered, then rose again. “You’re not afraid of me.” She should have been. Every instinct told her to run. Yet she couldn’t. Something about him tethered her in place, as if the earth itself had pulled her roots toward him. “I don’t know why,” she whispered, “but I’m not.” The Alpha took a step closer. The space between them crackled with unspoken electricity, a pull neither could deny. His hand rose slowly, as though he were afraid she’d vanish if he moved too fast. Fingers brushed her cheek, sending fire through her veins. “You’re mine,” he murmured, more to himself than her. “Fate has strange ways… but it always brings what belongs together.” Lila’s heart hammered so hard she thought he could hear it. She wanted to argue, to demand answers, but instead she found herself leaning into his touch, lost in the storm of his presence. And for the first time in her life, she didn’t feel lost. She felt found. The Alpha introduced himself as Kael, leader of the Shadowmoon pack. His people lived hidden, bound by old laws and older grudges, but one truth stood above them all when the Moon marked a pair, they were destined. Lila hadn’t believed in destiny before. She had believed in choice, in carving her own path. But when Kael looked at her, when his hand lingered just a breath too long on hers, when his voice softened only for her, it was impossible to deny the pull between them. Still, reality was never kind to forbidden things. “Your world isn’t ready for mine,” Kael said as they walked along the riverbank the next morning. Sunlight broke across the water, scattering silver like stars fallen to earth. “If they knew what I was what I am they’d fear you too. They’d never let us” He stopped himself, his jaw tight. “Then let them talk,” Lila said. She surprised herself with the fierceness of her tone. “I’ve never belonged there anyway. Maybe I belong here.” He turned to her sharply, eyes burning with something more than desire. Something deeper. “Do you understand what you’re saying?” Her breath caught. She did. Somewhere deep in her bones, she already knew. This wasn’t some fleeting spark. This was fire, the kind that consumed, the kind that changed everything it touched. She reached up, brushing her fingers against the line of his jaw. “I understand that when I look at you, the world makes sense for the first time.” Kael growled low in his throat not anger, but hunger, restrained. “You test me, little one.” “Do I?” she teased softly, her lips curving despite the storm in her chest. His control snapped. In one swift motion, he pulled her against him, his mouth claiming hers in a kiss that stole her breath, her thoughts, her very soul. It was rough, desperate, yet filled with a tenderness that made her knees weak. She clung to him, tasting the wildness in him, the promise of the forest and the moon and the endless night. When he finally broke away, his forehead pressed against hers, both of them gasping for air, he whispered, “You are my mate.” The words sank into her like a brand, like truth written on her very skin. Lila didn’t answer with words. Instead, she kissed him again, softer this time, sealing the vow neither of them could escape. For in that moment, beneath the endless sky, with the river whispering secrets at their feet, she knew: Whatever dangers lay ahead, whatever laws or fears would rise to tear them apart, she was his. And he was hers.
