Chapter 5: The Revine

746 Words
We ran blindly through the unforgiving terrain, the freezing rain blinding my eyes and the deep mud pulling at my feet until my high heels snapped. I stumbled, nearly dragging us both down, but Alekov caught me before I could fall. Without a word of complaint, he swept me up into his arms, carrying me effortlessly as he sprinted down a steep, muddy slope. We tumbled into a deep, hidden ravine, sliding through the wet ferns and dead leaves until we reached the bottom, completely shielded from the upper trail by thick brush. Alekov pulled me tight against the cold dirt wall of the ravine, pressing his heavy body over mine to keep me hidden. He clapped his large, warm hand gently over my mouth to silence my heavy, frantic panting. His own breathing was controlled, a quiet, dangerous rhythm as he listened to the forest above us. Through the thick canopy of trees, the sweeping beams of heavy tactical flashlights cut through the darkness. The hit squad had reached the crash site. They were dispersing, their boots splashing loudly in the puddles above our heads ."Find the girl!" a rough, accented voice shouted through the howling wind. "The Bratva boss wants her alive for leverage. Kill the bodyguard on sight! Leave his body for the wolves!" I trembled against Alekov's chest, the cold mud soaking into my skin, but the heat radiating from him was intoxicating. He slowly lowered his hand from my mouth, his fingers lingering on my lips for a second too long. His face was mere inches from mine, his dark eyes searching my face in the shadows. "They have thermal imaging on their scopes," Alekov whispered, his voice so low it was nearly swallowed by the sound of the rain. "If we stay out in the open forest, they will track our body heat within minutes. We need to reach the safehouse. It's less than a mile from here, and the walls are lined with lead shielding to block thermal scans. ""Can we make it without them seeing us?" I whispered back, my lips accidentally brushing against his jawline as I spoke. A sharp tremor went through his entire frame. His grip on my waist tightened, his leather gloves digging into the fabric of my dress. For a brief moment, the professional boundaries of the Volkov syndicate evaporated. We weren't a high-ranking mafia princess and her bound guard; we were just a man and a woman trapped in the dark, clinging to each other for survival. "I will get you inside that cabin, Elena," he swore, his eyes locking onto mine with a fierce, burning possessiveness that made my breath catch. "Even if I have to burn this entire forest down to do it. "Above us, the sound of a breaking branch signaled that one of the shooters was stepping closer to the edge of our ravine. The blinding beam of a high-intensity flashlight swept directly over our heads, illuminating the wet pine needles hanging inches from my face. My breath hitched, completely frozen in my throat as Alekov’s body tightened over mine like a shield of solid iron. He didn't move a single muscle, his right hand slowly sliding down to the tactical holster on his thigh, his fingers wrapping around the cold grip of his suppressed pistol. The raw, predatory instinct radiating from him was terrifying; he was entirely prepared to unleash a bloodbath in this pit if they discovered us. The heavy, dragging footsteps of the Bratva scout paused right at the ridge line directly above our huddle. Dirt and loose gravel trickled down the slope, landing softly onto my tattered gown. Every millisecond felt like an eternity as the wind screamed through the canopy, threatening to tear our hiding spot away. "Nothing over here but mud!" the guard shouted back toward the main trail, his heavy boots finally pivoting away from the edge. The sweeping white light vanished back into the dense black forest, leaving us once again submerged in the freezing, pitch-black shadows. Alekov slowly let out a low, ragged breath against my neck, his body finally relaxing slightly against mine, though his grip on my waist remained tight enough to leave a physical bruise. The three-foot radius my father had mandated was completely shattered in the dark mud of this mountain. We were alive, but the true test of our survival was waiting just a mile away behind the reinforced steel doors of the safehouse.
