Chapter 1: The Three-foot Radius
The silver blade pressing into the soft skin of my throat didn't terrify me; the way Alekov’s dark eyes tracked the single drop of blood on my collarbone did. He stood exactly three feet away from me in the dim, amber-lit shadows of my father's private study. It was his mandatory radius, a distance carved into the very laws of the Volkov syndicate. As my primary bodyguard, he was bound by a sacred, unyielding blood down the hallway. My father’s heavy enforcers were finally arriving, alerted by the silent alarm Alekov must have triggered. "Clean this up," Alekov commanded the men as they burst through the double doors, tossing the unconscious intruder to the floor like a sack of trash. He turned back to me, his expression snapping instantly back into a mask of cold, professional detachment. He stepped back, re-establishing his mandatory three-foot radius. "Miss Elena. Your father has issued an immediate emergency protocol. The perimeter is compromised. We are moving you to the secondary safehouse right now. Do not pack. Follow me.” ath to my father, Don Volkov. The rules of his employment were simple, brutal, and absolute, protect the boss's daughter with your life, remain a silent ghost in the background, and never, under any circumstances, lay a single finger on the civilian asset. To break that rule meant a slow, agonizing execution by the family enforcers. Over the last two years, that three-foot boundary had become an invisible electric fence, burning us both every time we stood too close. But tonight, the rules of our dangerous world were fracturing under the weight of desperate men. A sloppy, frantic grunt from a rival crew had somehow bypassed the heavy laser grid sensors of my father’s sprawling estate. Now, the intruder was trembling violently against my back, his breath hot, sour, and uneven against my ear as he pulled me flush against his rigid chest, using me as a human shield. He was hyperventilating, his hand shaking so badly that the edge of the knife dipped into my skin. "One step closer, Volkov, and I paint the marble floor with her pretty little head!" the grunt screamed, his voice cracking with a high-pitched panic that told me he knew he was already a dead man walking. Alekov didn't blink. He didn't even shift his weight. His tailored black Italian suit stretched tightly over his massive, heavily scarred six-foot-four frame. His large hands, covered in the dark, intricate ink of syndicate tattoos that crawled up his wrists and disappeared into his cuffs, rested loosely at his sides. To an untrained eye, he looked entirely relaxed, almost bored by the amateur threat. But I had watched him closely for twenty-four months. I knew the micro-expressions of his rage. I could see the way his jaw was clenched so hard a muscle ticked violently in his jawline. I could see the way his chest rose and fell in slow, rhythmic, deadly breaths. He was an apex predator calculating the exact millisecond to strike, waiting for the intruder's grip to slip by a single millimeter. "You slipped through the iron gates," Alekov said, his deep baritone voice dangerously calm and completely devoid of any human fear. "An impressive feat, truly. It means someone on our payroll took a heavy bribe to look the other way. But it also means you have absolutely no exit strategy. The perimeter is already locked down. No one is coming to save you, and you will not leave this room alive. "I take her, I get my leverage! The Don will give me whatever territory I want to get his precious daughter back!" the man yelled, his grip tightening in a blind panic. The sharp edge of the blade nipped deeper into my flesh. A tiny, warm bead of blood trickled slowly down my neck, staining the collar of my white silk dress. Alekov’s eyes changed. The cold professional mask vanished, replaced by bottomless pits of pure, lethal obsidian. The temperature in the room seemed to drop to freezing in a single second. The air grew heavy, suffocating, vibrating with the silent promise of murder. "You just altered your deal," Alekov whispered. In a flash of movement too fast for the human eye to track, Alekov closed the three-foot gap. His left hand shot forward like a strike of lightning, clamping around the grunt's wrist with a sickening crack of breaking bone. The knife clattered loudly to the floor. Before the man could even scream from the agony, Alekov’s right hand gripped his throat, lifting his entire two-hundred-pound body completely off the floor and slamming him hard into the mahogany wall. Paintings rattled against the drywall. The grunt choked, his legs kicking uselessly in the air as Alekov slowly suffocated him, his expression completely blank as he watched the life leave the man's eyes. "Alekov," I breathed, my hand flying to my neck to touch the small cut. My heart was hammering violently against my ribs, not from the intruder's attack, but from the raw, terrifying power radiating from the man standing in front of me. He didn't look at the man he was choking to death. He looked only at me. His intense, burning gaze locked onto the tiny smear of crimson on my collarbone, his nostrils flaring. Heavy, synchronized footsteps began to echo
