Chapter 13

1849 Words
Rachel I looked towards the source of the sneering voice and I saw a female approaching me. She was dressed in a wine blouse and a black skirt. Her attire outlined her figure. I didn't even know if it was natural but her cleavage was showing. "Patricia, why are you here?" The receptionist asked as she returned my phone to me. I accepted my phone and stared at the new arrival. I didn't want to be rude so I didn't reply to her previous comment about me. She might turn out to be my coworker in the nearest future. I did not want to cultivate any bad blood between us. Still, I looked down at my dressing and I checked her getup again. Since I didn't want to embarrass Chase, I made sure I only exploited the limits of modesty in my dressing. My clothes didn't show any private body parts but it still showed my charm. I don't know how Patricia got the idea that I was here to seduce a client. If those words were said about her, I would be convinced. I didn't mean to judge but her getup made her seem like she wanted to attract men's fiery gazes instead. She wasn't in any position to criticize me. From Miss Melanie words, I knew that Patricia was Mr Briggs' secretary or assistant. "I am here to see who claimed to have an appointment with Mr Briggs." Patricia replied Miss Melanie. She looked at me from head to toe. "Which job did you apply for?" She asked after she finished her observation. Patricia was questioning me like she was the CEO of this company. Still, I put the fire of my irritation out. I took a deep breath and sighed softly. "I applied for the position of Chase's secretary." I answered as I stared at her. If she said anymore nonsensical things again to me, I would not hold back. I had already heeded my mother's advice. I didn't fight with my fists. I was going to fight with my words and if Patricia still didn't want to let me go, I would resort to my fists. It was the final option. I don't want to ask Chase for any help in securing this job. I wanted to win the job by myself. Patricia's gaze turned hostile at my words. She chuckled, "Oh, it is another one of those gold-digging women that want to be by Mr. Chase's side. Besides, how could you call him by his name without any hint of respect added to it? And you say you want to work here." "How do you know I was one of those gold-digging women that want to hook up with Chase? It seems like you also have something to hide. Only a golddigger would know a golddigger." I retorted as I folded my arms. Patricia's face reddened and she stammered. "W-what kind of nonsense are you spouting? Who are you trying to accuse?" She stuttered as she spoke. My eyes narrowed. If she wasn't interested in Chase at all, her reaction would not be like this. Patricia's reaction showed that she held an unknown fantasy about Chase. Jealousy burned through me. I smiled, "Nobody's accusing anyone of anything. Moreover, it is not like I said a lie." I could feel the security men's piercing eyes on me. I knew that they would act if the isuue goes for a worse turn. "You!" Patricia said before she raised her hand up to slap me. I held her hand as I glared at her, "What do you think you are doing? You want to overstep your boundaries?" Immediately I finished speaking, I flung her hand away. The force I used was huge so she stumbled back. "Patricia, what are you doing? You are not behaving like an employee of the esteemed Steel Cell Group!" Melanie reprimanded, "Miss Rachel, you should have exercised patience. There might be a mistake somewhere. The two of you should behave yourselves." I calmed down after I heard her words. I didn't want to disgrace Chase so I must not make a scene here. The other workers and the visiting clients turned to look at us. I blamed Mr Briggs too. I knew I aced the online test that had been organized by the Steel Cell Group. It wasn't a phony job website that I randomly scouted and I wasn't pretending. I don't know why Mr Briggs didn't record my interview in his schedule. His mistake was causing me unnecessary stress. "Where is Mr Briggs? I would like to see him. He would be able to confirm my interview." I said in a cool tone. Patricia scoffed and then, she burst into a laughing fit. She pointed at me, "Do you think Mr Briggs is your everyday Joe? Do you think you would be able to see him whenever you want to? Continue fooling yourself!" I didn't say anything to Patricia. She was just pushing my anger buttons and I didn't want to act out. It was better to stay quiet. I would wait until I see Mr Briggs instead. "What is going on here?" A calm voice asked. Dominance and authority oozed from that calm voice. It was a familiar voice. I looked up to see Chase entering the lobby. A man was walking behind him in a deferential position. Chase was in a suit that accentuated his powerful figure. Suddenly, I felt my throat was lacking the moisture it needed. "Rachel, why are you here?" Chase asked. His eyes scanned my body for a short second before he settled his gaze on my face. Patricia blanched. Chase's words had confirmed my close relationship with him. Finally, my knight in shining armor arrived. I didn't want Chase to be involved but now, everything was for naught. He was definitely going to resolve this issue personally. "I wanted to be your secretary so I applied online. My live interview was scheduled for 12 PM. I arrived here to see that Mr Briggs, the man that was supposed to conduct my interview didn't put it into his schedule." I explained, "Now, Patricia, his assistant is trying to get me to leave." "W-when did I ask you to leave?" Patricia questioned aggressively, "Mr Chase, she is lying." Chase's brows furrowed, "Melanie, what happened here?" "Miss Rachel came for an interview but I didn't see it on Mr Briggs appointment list so I phoned Patricia. Patricia came downstairs and she spoke rudely to Miss Rachel." Melanie summarized what took place. Patricia glared at Melanie, "Why are you saying false words? Do you think you could help her by lying? You bootlicker!" Melanie stared at her like she was a fool with zero common sense. "Why will I support her? Do I know her from anywhere? Pick anybody from this lobby and they would not tell Mr Chase anything different." Melanie asked as she folded her arms and stared at Patricia. "You are covering for her because she has an unknown relationship with Mr Chase. We don't even know the kind of relationship she has with him." Patricia spat. The way she mentioned the relationship I had with Chase was dubious. It hinted at something else. Everyone stared at her passively. She wasn't respecting Chase at all. She dared to say that kind of comment in his presence. She was brave. However, her bravery was a foolish one. I don't know what was giving her the audacity to do what she did. "Mr Briggs?" Chase called with a stern voice. The man beside him shivered visibly. "Y-yes sir?" Mr Briggs answered. I stared at the man. So this was Mr Briggs. "Is this how you handle the employees under you?" Chase asked with a calm voice. His voice hid tumultuous aura within it. "No sir." Mr Briggs said before turning to me, "I am sorry for the mistake Miss Rachel, we would commence the interview now." "Don't worry about the interview, I will hold the interview with Rachel." Chase cut in. Mr Briggs seemed to take Chase's words as a sign that he was still angry. Mr Briggs frowned, "Patricia, go the Human Resource Department and state the wrongs you did. They will give you the appropriate punishment." "This should be the last time something like this would happen. Any more strikes takes your job away." Chase warned before he turned to me, "Let's go." He began heading upstairs to the elevators and I followed him diligently. A warm feeling settled in my heart when I saw Chase stand up for me. We didn't say anything to each other and we got to his office moments later. He sat on the huge wooden desk that took a great amount of space. I sat down on one of the chairs guests and clients would use whenever they visit Chase's office. Chase folded his arms as he stared at me, "Why do you suddenly want to be my secretary? What prompted you to do it?" I chuckled awkwardly, "I want to go into business and finance so I figured out that the best way to start is by your side. If I can not learn anything by your side, it means I can not learn anything at all. I have to learn from the best." "Rachel, you are playing a dangerous game." Chase muttered with his dark gaze levelled on me. My heart skipped. What was he talking about? Did he say those inadvertently or was it for me to hear? I don't know if Chase discovered the fact that I was trying to seduce him passively. I was afraid that he knew about my little actions. My fear came from the fact that his inaction while being aware of my feelings would show me the stark reality I didn't want to face. A reality that would splash Chase's heartbreaking response to my feelings in my face. I didn't address his words. Not speaking up might be cowardly but it protected me in a bubble too. "So, are you not going to ask me any questions? This is an interview after all." I changed the subject since I was getting jittery under Chase's predatory gaze. I felt like he could see all the secrets I am trying to hide. I felt like I was naked and exposed to him. For some reason, his words rang in my head again. It seemed like I was really playing with a blazing sun, not a burning fire. "I already did." Chase said, "You are hired. Come to work tomorrow." I stood up. I wanted to stay behind so I could spend more time with him. Still, I couldn't realize my wish because I felt like I did not make any progress with Chase. When I sat down, I made sure I was in my best angle. I didn't see any reactions though. His earlier words discomfited me too. Fire burned in my eyes as I exited his office. The urge to compete surged within me. Tomorrow, I would not let him go.
