Chapter 12

Rachel My mother didn't need to tell me that the way to seduce someone effectively was to be closer to that particular person. I had to be near the person to show that person my good traits and my charms. I can not do that if I was miles way from Chase. A stream from Europe can't extinguish a blazing fire in America. It was that simple. I had to be very close to him for my charms to have a chance to do their work. This was the reason why I opted for seeking a job as his secretary. The position of a secretary was the closest I could get to Chase. I would be able to be with him for long hours. After I compiled my CV, I submitted it on the official website of The Steel Cell Group. The rest of the day was spent on waiting patiently for a response from the Steel Cell Group. In the evening, I finally got an email that asked me to come for a live interview tomorrow. I had passed the online interview. I was wrapped in happiness all through. After dinner, I stared at my phone as I browsed through Google. I couldn't sleep, excitement prevented my eyes from closing. I couldn't believe the fact that I might become Chase's secretary. I was one step closer to my goal! I found a reputable website to purchase office attires. When my mother took me to the mall to restock my wardrobe, we didn't get office wears. Nobody would have guessed that I would be going for an interview days later. I put my mother's advice in mind. Since I was going to be working closely with Chase, some of my office dresses have to be tailored to the advice my mother gave. I had to look exquisite and at the same time, I had to draw Chase's eyes to me passively. I pored over the various dresses and attires I saw on the website. Soon, I finally settled with five sets of outfits. I had to keep it in mind that I was going to work in official setting. I couldn't do anything that would disgrace Chase. Besides, I did not want any unsavory rumors about Chase and I circulating everywhere. . The website was efficient and the delivery time for my orders was going to be in the morning. It gave me the space to prepare thoroughly for the interview. The time I used to select my attires acted as the best lullaby. I fell asleep in no time. My biological clock woke me up the next day and I freshened up. I went downstairs. My mother was in the living room watching television. She saw me when she went to check on the meal that was cooking in the kitchen. "Why are you up so early?" My mother asked as she stirred the rice she was frying. I huffed, "You are talking like I don't get up early on normal days." I walked to the living room. "Oh, I understand." My mother agreed, "So why are you up early?" I almost rolled my eyes. My mother said she understood but she asked me the same question again. She obviously didn't believe me. She was just trying to humor me. "Have you forgotten the project we are on? I want to apply to be Chase's secretary. I would be closer to him that way." I explained as I sat on the soft couch. "Okay. Good luck." My mother said before she continued cooking breakfast. "Mom." I called as I turned around to peer at the kitchen from where I sat. "Yes baby." My mother answered. "Did any package arrive? I ordered something online." I explained. My mother didn't look back at me, "No." I began to wait patiently. I had already cleaned myself up. I just needed to don my outfit. For now, I had to skip any forms of makeup. I don't have any knowledge about makeup. I would learn later. I have to make do with going bare for the interview. Then I remembered that I had a queen at home. "Mom, can you give me a natural makeup for the interview?" I said as I tried to look at her with the most pitiful face I could muster. "I will. Just tell me when you are ready." My mother said. She switched the gas cooker off before she began to plate the dishes. I stood up to help her set the dining table before I went to wake my brother up. Anticipation was burning through me but I stumped the urge to check the door. I had to convince myself that the delivery man or woman would ring the doorbell when they bring the package I bought from the clothing website. Checking the door now would yield no results. After Norman and I sat down for breakfast, my dad joined us. There was no small talk at the dining table. Personally, I was occupied with imagining how the future interview would go so I didn't have the spare time to discuss with the rest of my family. I resumed my position in the living room after I was done with the meal. The clothing website did not disappoint and the door rang an hour later. I dashed to the door. I saw a man wearing an ordinary attire at the door. It wasn't the deliveryman. Disappointment flooded through me and I levelled a stoic gaze at the man. "What do you need?" I asked. The man brought out a notebook. "Are you Miss Rachel Michaels?" He asked as he brought a pen out. "Yes." I confirmed as happiness bloomed in me sgain. The disappointment I felt previously washed away like the ocean tide. I noticed the logo on the jacket he tied around his waist. It was the logo of the website I bought the office outfits from. I didn't notice it in my previous haste. I accepted the notebook and pen. I signed swiftly after that and I looked at him expectantly. He moved sideways and the box his figure was hiding came into my view. "Thank you." I said before hauling the box in. Since I had all the materials I needed on hand, there was nothing stopping me from getting fully ready anymore. I chose a grey skirt with a slit at the front and a cream shirt. The skirt had a cute bow at the beginning of the slit. The style was both elegant and charming. It showed off my figure without being too vulgar. I went downstairs to ask my mother to fulfill her promise but she wasn't there. I checked the master bedroom. She was there. I heaved a sigh of relief. My mother can not go MIA when I really need her. "Mom, I am ready to go." I said softly. My mother turned to look at me. She paused in shock and she didn't stop staring at me for a long while. I coughed, "Mom, you are making me nervous." I was a little subconscious after my mother stared at me like I was a unique specimen. My mother only acted like this if someone did a great thing. It can either be a great use of their brain or a great foolishness. I don't know which category I fit into. My mother stood up from the bed she was lounging on and came to me. "You look amazing! If I was a guy and I wasn't related to you in any way, I would have taken you away." My mother's eyes was twinkling as she spoke. I knew she wasn't trying to comfort me. She truly meant what she said. My confidence soared to greater height. "Sit down. You would see the magic I would perform now." My mother urged as she pushed me to her dressing table. She sat me down before she took out her makeup kit. Soon, she began her magic. I thought it would take longer to finish but she didn't use too my time. "Look at yourself." My mother tilted my head to glance at the mirror. Her tone was as smug as it could be. I stared at my reflection in the mirror and my eyes shined. She had a right to be smug and prideful. She did a really good job. I wore a plain silver wristwatch. I checked the time. It was 10:59 AM. I stood up quickly. I had only one hour to spare so I quickly hugged my mother and took my leave. I had to leave early to prepare for any inconsistencies that pop up. I don't want to be stranded. "Have a good interview. You are going to get the job." My mother encouraged as I left swiftly. "I hope so!" I replied as I dashed out of the house as fast as I could. I had grabbed the keys to Norman's car on my way out. I was saving up for my own car. Right now, I had to make do with Norman's car first. Thankfully, there wasn't any traffic so I got to Steel Cell Group's premises on time. I brought my CV in case of any need that might crop up. I could not fail this interview. I parked my car in the designated area before I headed into the building. Bulky security guards stood at the entrance. They did not stop me but their sharp eyes scanned me thoroughly as I walked past them. Nobody would be able to commit any atrocity with the way these security looked at people. Those that could do so had huge guts. I headed to the receptionist I saw behind a huge marble desk. It was hard not to notice her. She was placed in a conspicuous position so that everyone that needed to go to the upper floor had to consult with her first. I smiled politely, "Hello, I am Rachel Micheals and I have an interview with Mr Briggs." She returned my formal smile before she tapped away at her computer. It seemed she did not find what she was looking for because she dialled her desk phone instead. The phone rang three times before the call connected. "Patricia, did Mr Briggs have any interview with a lady called Miss Rachel Michaels?" The receptionist asked. The person at the other end of the line began to speak but I couldn't hear her clearly. The receptionist hummed and she hung up. "Mr Briggs' assistant said he didn't schedule any interviews today." The receptionist informed me. I glanced at her name tag. She was called Melanie Stratton. "Miss Melanie, that can't be. I would not come here if I didn't have an interview with Mr Briggs." I said as I brought my phone out. My heart dropped. I didn't anticipate something like this when I was coming to the Steel Cell Group. I opened the email I received about the interview and passed the phone to Melanie. I wanted her to take a look at the email so she would see I was genuine. I didn't come here to play a trick. I did not want to turn back now so I had to try and salvage this situation with all my might. I was regretting my decision to keep Chase out of the loop. I wanted to surprise him with my new job as his secretary. I didn't want to come in through the backdoor. "Who is this? Are you trying to look for a job or to hook up with a client?" A female voice sneered.
