Chapter 6: The Ruthless Choice

2016 Words
"Sir, the enemy has hacked the system," Gumay shouted through the roaring noise of the static. "Your second wife has been taken hostage, and a time bomb is active in Lady Sia's room!" The words hung in the pitch-black study like an executioner's blade. Sean did not flinch, nor did his pulse accelerate. The crimson emergency lights flickered back to life, casting a harsh, bloody glow over his reconstructed features. His dark eyes remained completely calm, devoid of any panic or hesitation as the red warning sirens continued to wail through the corridor walls. Sia stood frozen near the central terminal, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Her hands trembled so violently that she dropped the data drive containing her father's betrayal. The sudden darkness, the gunfire, and the news of the bomb created a chaotic storm that threatened to crush her remaining sanity. "Sean," Sia whispered, her voice cracking under the sheer terror of the situation. "Did you hear him? Elena is in their hands, and my room..." Sean ignored the rising panic in her voice. He stepped toward the wall-mounted interkom, his heavy boots making a slow, deliberate sound against the polished floor. He reached out with his left hand, pressing the override switch with smooth, terrifying precision. "Gumay," Sean addressed the interkom, his parau voice cutting through the heavy static like cold iron. "Where are the hostage-takers holding Elena?" "They are in the east wing lounge, Sir," Gumay replied instantly, the sound of rapid automatic gunfire echoing in the background. "They are demanding safe passage out of the upper district and the master security keys to the energy grid, or they will execute Lady Elena on live broadcast." Sia watched Sean closely, expecting him to order a breach team or start a complex negotiation to save his political second wife. Elena was the daughter of a powerful high commander, and her death would trigger an immediate political war with the shadow faction. "Do not negotiate," Sean commanded coldly, his expression entirely unreadable under the flashing red lights. "Execute the hostage-takers immediately. Use heavy suppressive fire and eliminate every intruder in the east wing." Sia gasped, her eyes widening in absolute horror as she stepped toward him. "Sean, no! Elena is in that room! If you order them to fire, she will be caught in the crossfire!" "Elena is a liability, and her handlers made a fatal mistake by entering my house," Sean stated without looking back at her. His tone was utterly devoid of human warmth, returning to the ruthless nature of a man who had survived the slaughter of The Sump. "Sir," Gumay's voice hesitated for a fraction of a second over the static line. "Lady Elena's survival is crucial for our diplomatic cover with the political council. Are you certain?" "You have your orders, Gumay," Sean replied sharply, his voice carrying an absolute dictate that left no room for appeal. "Clear the east wing with lethal force. Leave no survivors, captured or otherwise." "Understood, Sir," Gumay answered, and the transmission cut out with a sharp click. Sia backed away from Sean, staring at him as if he were a complete stranger. The cold indifference with which he had signed another human being's death warrant made her skin crawl. "You are a monster," she breathed out, her voice shaking. "She is your wife, even if only on paper. How can you throw her life away so easily?" "Elena knew the risks when her father placed her in my mansion," Sean said, turning around to face her. His dark gaze locked onto her trembling form, ignoring her accusation entirely. "She was planted here to destroy us from the inside. I will not waste a single second negotiating for a spy when your life is ticking away." Before Sia could process his words, Sean grabbed her wrist in an iron hold, dragging her toward the heavy study door. The emergency locks groaned as he manually forced the pneumatic seals open with his cybernetic right hand, the metal screeched under his immense strength. "Let me go!" Sia cried out, trying to pull her arm back as they stepped into the filling corridor. Thick, black smoke was already pouring from the ventilation shafts, and the smell of burning wiring hung heavy in the air. "I can run on my own!" "You are not going anywhere without me," Sean muttered, his grasp on her tightening until it was impossible to slip away. He pulled her flush against his side, using his broad shoulders to shield her from the falling ceiling debris. They raced down the grand hallway of the residential wing. The heat was rising rapidly, turning the luxurious mansion into a blazing furnace. Bright orange flames licked at the fine tapestries and white marble pillars, eating away at the artificial perfection Sean had built. As they approached the entrance to the western wing, a massive explosion shook the floorboards. The shockwave threw Sia off balance, but Sean caught her effortlessly, absorbing the impact with his own body. A heavy oak beam, engulfed in roaring flames, collapsed from the ceiling directly above them. Without a second of hesitation, Sean pivoted, placing himself directly beneath the falling structure. The heavy, burning wood struck his back with a sickening thud. Sia screamed as she felt the intense heat radiate past his body, but Sean did not yield. He grunted softly, his jaw clenching so hard the synthetic seams on his cheek strained, but he held the blazing weight on his shoulders, refusing to let a single ember touch her skin. "Sean!" Sia yelled, tears streaming down her face as she saw the fabric of his tailored suit catch fire. "Get off me! You are burning!" "Move forward," Sean growled, his parau voice sounding rougher than ever as he exerted his cybernetic strength to push the heavy beam aside. He shoved her ahead into the clear doorway of her private quarters before tumbling in behind her. The room was already filled with dense, suffocating smoke. In the center of the chamber, sitting on the mahogany vanity table, was a metallic black box. A digital timer was glowing bright red on its surface, counting down from forty-five seconds. Sia stumbled backward, her hand covering her mouth as the realization hit her. The bomb was real, and it was seconds away from detonating. The door behind them was partially blocked by the fallen burning debris, leaving no time to clear the passage and escape back into the corridor. "There is no time," Sia sobbed, looking at the rapidly decreasing numbers on the display. Thirty seconds remained. "We are going to die in here." Sean did not look at the bomb. He did not look at the flames creeping through the doorway. His entire focus remained locked entirely on Sia. He walked over to her with heavy, deliberate steps, grabbing her by the waist and lifting her effortlessly into his arms. "You are not dying today, Sia," Sean stated, his voice ringing with a terrifying, unshakeable conviction. He carried her across the room toward the reinforced glass balcony doors. The glass was designed to withstand high-pressure blasts, sealed tight against the outer elements. Sean raised his heavy right arm, the cybernetic components humming as he gathered every ounce of mechanical force available in his frame. He drove his fist into the reinforced glass. A loud, web-like crack spread across the pane. He struck it a second time, and then a third, until the heavy glass shattered into a thousand harmless pieces, exposing them to the howling wind and rain of the upper district night. Below the balcony was the deep, dark expanse of the private estate's lower water reservoir, a massive security pool located three stories down. "Look at me, Sia," Sean commanded, his voice forcing her to turn her face away from the ticking clock on the table. Fifteen seconds left. Sia looked into his eyes, seeing no fear of death, only an all-consuming, possessive fire that burned brighter than the flames behind them. "Sean, please..." "You belong to me, Sia," Sean whispered, his arms wrapping around her like an impenetrable fortress, covering her head and chest with his own body as he stepped out onto the ledge. "In life or in death, I will never let you go." He jumped just as the timer reached zero. A massive, deafening explosion ripped through the western wing behind them, sending a blinding wave of fire and shattered concrete out into the night sky. The sheer force of the blast hit Sean's back like a physical sledgehammer, but he tightened his grip around Sia, twisting his body in mid-air so that he would take the full impact of the fall. They plummeted through the cold night air, surrounded by raining sparks and burning debris, before crashing violently into the deep waters of the reservoir below. The cold water swallowed them whole, quenching the flames on Sean's clothes instantly. The impact was brutal, knocking the remaining air from Sia's lungs, but even under the dark, turbulent surface, Sean's arms never loosened their hold on her. He pulled her upward, kicking fiercely against the current until they broke through the surface. Sia gasped for air, coughing violently as the cold rain struck her face. She wiped the water from her eyes, looking around the dark reservoir yard. The estate was in total chaos. Alarm sirens wailed across the upper district, and black smoke billowed into the stormy sky from the burning mansion above. Sean dragged her onto the concrete edge of the pool, his breathing heavy and ragged. His suit was ruined, his back badly scorched, but he stood tall, towering over her as the rain washed the soot from his reconstructed face. Footsteps rushed toward them through the dark. Gumay emerged from the shadow of the lower service tunnels, holding a tactical rifle, his clothes stained with fresh blood from the east wing clearance. "Sir," Gumay reported, bowing his head quickly. "The intruders in the east wing have been completely neutralized. Lady Elena survived the fire, but she is severely injured and under heavy guard." Sean did not look at Gumay. He kept his eyes fixed firmly on Sia, who was sitting on the wet ground, shivering from the cold and the sheer horror of the night's events. He stepped forward, reaching down to grab her hand, pulling her up to her feet with an unyielding force. The illusion of a peaceful corporate transition was completely shattered. The shadow faction had struck his home, and Sean had answered with absolute, bloodthirsty brutality. The soft strategy was over. "Gather the remaining security strike teams, Gumay," Sean commanded, his parau voice cutting through the sound of the falling rain with a chilling, lethal promise. "Activate all dormant assets of Obsidian Vanguard. The oligarchy wanted a war, and I will burn Neo-Veridia to the ground until every last one of them is dead." Sia looked at him, feeling the cold steel of his possessive grip around her fingers. She knew then that there was no escaping the storm that was coming, and there was no escaping the man who held her life in his hands. "What about me, Sean?" Sia asked, her voice trembling against the cold wind as she stared into his dark, unforgiving eyes. "Are you going to lock me in another cage while you destroy this city?" Sean leaned down, his wet hair dripping onto her cheek as his dark gaze locked onto hers with a possessive, terrifying intensity. "You are coming with me to the command hub, Sia," Sean whispered, his voice ringing with a promise that sealed her fate forever. "Because from this second on, the entire city will know that anyone who touches my wife will answer directly to my blade."
