Chapter 5: The Broken Shield

"Because the records of your past have just been flagged by the shadow faction, and I will tear down this entire city before I let them discover who your father really is." Sia took a slow step backward, her breath catching in her throat as the weight of Sean’s words crushed the remaining air from her lungs. The dim, synthetic lighting of the grand dining hall suddenly felt colder, sharper, casting jagged shadows across his reconstructed face. She searched his dark eyes for any sign of a cruel joke, but there was only a chilling, absolute certainty staring back at her. Her knees felt weak, and she had to grip the back of a velvet dining chair to keep herself upright. "What are you talking about, Sean?" Sia asked, her voice barely louder than a whisper. "My father was a mid-tier technician who died in the industrial sectors years ago. He had nothing to do with your world, and he certainly had nothing to do with the people who tried to destroy you." Sean did not look away, his large frame remaining completely still as he stood over the polished obsidian table. "Your father did not die in an accident, Sia. He was scrubbed from the municipal databases because he completed a very specific, very illegal project for the shadow faction just days before I was ambushed in the slums." "You are lying to keep me compliant," Sia said, her voice rising as a wave of hot anger cut through her shock. She released her grip on the chair and took a defiant step toward him, her hands trembling. "You want me to believe that I am safe only under your control. You want me to believe that the whole world is my enemy so that I never try to walk out of these gates." Sean reached out, his heavy gloved hand catching her wrist with lightning speed. He did not hurt her, but his grip was an unyielding band of iron that anchored her right where she stood. He leaned down, his parau voice dropping into a dark, possessive rumble that vibrated against her skin. "I have never lied to you about the dangers of Neo-Veridia, Sia. I locked you in this fortress because your bloodline is a direct link to the men who carved open my chest." "Let me go, Sean," Sia demanded, twisting her wrist against his hold, but it was like trying to break through solid steel. "If you are so certain, show me the proof. Show me the data logs that prove my father was a murderer." "The files are encrypted within the central mainframe of this house," Sean answered, his gaze locking onto hers with a fierce intensity. "They remain there for your own protection. If that information leaks to Elena or her handlers, they will use it to execute you before the council can even form a trial." "I do not care about the council, and I do not trust your version of protection anymore," Sia snapped, her eyes burning with tears that she refused to let fall in front of him. "Every wall you build around me feels less like a shield and more like a cage to keep your secrets safe." Sean slowly released his grip, his expression hardening back into the emotionless mask of the ghost CEO. "Go back to your quarters, Sia. The security matrix will remain at maximum capacity tonight. Do not make me enforce your restriction by locking the doors manually." Sia did not say another word. She turned on her heel and walked out of the dining hall, the soft clicking of her shoes sounding hollow against the marble floor. Instead of returning to the residential wing, her feet guided her toward the dark, quiet corridor that led to Sean’s private study. The mansion was completely silent, save for the low, rhythmic hum of the ventilation system and the distant whirring of patrolling surveillance droids outside the glass panes. She stopped in front of the massive reinforced oak door of the study. Her heart hammered violently against her ribs as she raised her hand toward the biometric scanner next to the frame. To her surprise, the device blinked a soft green, recognizing her authorization codes. Sean had never revoked her access to the central rooms, a lingering sign of the absolute trust he had placed in her when they were still hiding in the slums. The door slid open with a quiet mechanical hiss, revealing the expansive, dark room. The only illumination came from the massive wall of holographic monitors displaying the real-time energy flow charts of Neo-Veridia. Sia walked over to the main terminal, her fingers moving quickly across the glowing interface. She was a skilled cyber-medic, and breaking through secondary encryption paths was something she had done hundreds of times in the lower sectors. "Come on," Sia whispered to herself, her eyes scanning the lines of code reflecting in her pupils. "Show me the truth, Sean." She bypassed the corporate folders, searching deeper into the hidden partitioned sectors of the mainframe. Her fingers froze when she discovered a heavily encrypted file labeled Project Genesis, dated exactly two weeks before Sean’s assassination attempt. She bypassed the security firewalls using a decryption bypass patch she had kept stored in her personal data drive. The file expanded, displaying an architectural blueprint of a ritualistic weapon, a jagged, bergerigi knife designed to cause maximum internal hemorrhaging. Below the schematic was a digital signature authorizing the manufacturing process in an unregistered lower-sector foundry. Sia felt the air completely leave her body as she read the name attached to the signature. It was the unique corporate registration number of her biological father. Accompanying the file was a voice log, corrupted by static but unmistakably clear. "The weapon is complete," her father’s voice echoed softly from the terminal speaker. "The serrated edge will ensure the energy core is corrupted upon contact. The target will not survive the night in The Sump." Sia fell back into the leather desk chair, her mind spinning into a chaotic vortex of horror and disbelief. Sean had been telling the truth. Her own father had designed the very blade that had ripped through Sean’s chest, the very weapon that had filled his lungs with blood and left him for dead in the acid rain. The entire foundation of her life shattered in an instant. She had saved the man her father had tried to murder, and now she was married to him, living under his absolute control. "No," Sia sobbed, covering her mouth with her hands as the room seemed to tilt around her. "This cannot be real." She realized with sudden, terrifying clarity why Sean was so obsessed with keeping her hidden. He was not just protecting her from the shadow faction, he was holding the ultimate leverage over her entire existence. If the world discovered who she was, she would be hunted down as an accomplice to high treason. A cold panic seized her. She could no longer stay in this house. She could no longer look into Sean’s reconstructed face without seeing the shadow of her father’s sins. She stood up wildly, grabbing her data drive from the console, intending to run toward the lower transport tubes before Sean could realize she had breached the mainframe. Temptation to flee overwhelmed her, but before she could take a single step toward the exit, a piercing, high-pitched siren suddenly shattered the silence of the mansion. The crimson emergency lights flashed to life, bathed the marble walls in a bloody hue, and then, with a heavy mechanical clunk, the main power grid went completely dead. The holographic monitors dissolved into darkness, leaving the study in near-total blackness, illuminated only by the pale moonlight filtering through the high windows. Sia froze, her breath catching as the sound of distant gunfire echoed from the lower courtyard. The security matrix had been compromised. A sharp static crackle erupted from the wall-mounted interkom, followed by the sound of heavy, frantic footsteps splashing through fluid. Gumay’s voice broke through the speaker, laced with a rare, absolute panic that made Sia’s blood turn to ice. "Sir, the enemy has hacked the system," Gumay shouted through the roaring noise of the static. "Your second wife has been taken hostage, and a time bomb is active in Lady Sia's room!"
