GRETA:
I am in front of my mirror, staring at the silver dress on my body. It's the most beautiful and expensive dress I've ever worn and to think it was bought by the man who had asked me to fall to my knees three days ago is something I can't even wrap my head around.
Of course, my rent has been paid and nine thousand dollars is still sitting pretty in my account but it doesn't quell the unease in my chest.
I had lied to Kylian about everything; from how I paid the house rent and where I was going today.
Turning on my heels, I try not to wobble. Kylian is on the bed with a carton of noodles in his hand. He wolfs it down and I try not to look at him in annoyance.
Somehow, everything he has been doing for the past few weeks has been annoying me.
"Kylian, what about the job at the factory? Haven't you gotten a response?"
Slowly, he looks up at me and his eyes widen. Pushing out of the bed, he walks over to me and wraps his arms around my waist. "You look so breathtaking. Your friend must have spent so much to get this outfit for you. I really should thank her."
"Kylian?" I call again, pulling out of his hold. "Have you gotten a response?"
He scratches his head. "Actually, I forgot to click send that night. Slept off on my keyboard and didn't realise. I'd have to wait till next month."
Pure rage boils through me and I try not to lash out at him. I have a dinner party to attend with Klaus tonight and I want to look my best.
Snatching my purse, I push past him before leaving the house in anger.
Our wedding is in a week's time! And he doesn't have a source of income! His parents don't even know he's getting married. Hell, I have never met them and he wants us to get married without their blessing. Utterly ridiculous!
A car is waiting outside for me and I slip in, smiling at the chauffeur and taking in the cosy interiors. For Klaus to send a limousine, he must come from great wealth. I have no idea what is waiting for me tonight and honestly, I am nervous. Really nervous.
The drive doesn't last up to an hour and soon, we are driving through the gates of a large estate, past mansions and a large expanse of grasslands and golf courses.
I shudder at the sight.
Soon, the car door opens and I am ushered out and led towards the large entrance. I try not to look starstruck at the sight before me but I am unable to contain it. The paintings worth millions of dollars, the dome roof made out of pure gold, the glass floors I can see myself through and the maids and guards stationed at the door. It's enough for me to know that Klaus is not just any wealthy man. He comes from generational wealth. From royalty.
"There she is!" A familiar voice booms from across the hall and I turn to see Klaus standing at the end of the ornate steps several metres away from me. He is dressed in a tuxedo, tailored to fit his muscular frame. His dark shock of hair is swept back and pulled into a low ponytail. This accentuates his jaw. There is not an ounce of imperfection on him.
He stops before me with a smile on his face, waving off the butler who ushered me in. His arm slides around my waist and he pulls me into a hug, very intimate. I try to concentrate on the situation I am in instead of the heat his body is passing to me. I try not to drown in the heavenly scent of his cologne and the strength of his arms.
"We must act like we are in love with each other, Greta," He whispers into my ear. "My mother is really hard to convince and she doesn't even believe I have a fiancée in the first place."
"Maybe you should have fallen in love months ago. This wouldn't have been hard."
"Oh, I have."
"Who is she?"
"She's standing right before me."
My eyes roll behind my head and when I try to pull away, he snatches my waist and grabs my hand, pulling me behind a column at the corner.
Klaus pins me against the wall, pressing his body into mine and I squirm, fighting the gust of desire that engulfs me. I feel terrible that he is able to incite these feelings in me. For f**k's sake, I am in love with Kylian and will be married to him in a week!
"You need to look like you are in love with me, Greta," He whispers into my ears as his teeth nip my earlobe. He has me under his spell. Cupping my buttocks, he pulls me into him and tips my chin to look up at him. "Say you love me."
"I don't." I whisper, holding back a moan that threatens to escape my throat.
"For crying out loud, act like you do. Practice it so it feels smooth against your tongue when you say it before my family members."
Sighing, I nod. It takes a lot for me to say those words. I feel like I am betraying Kylian who is probably back home ordering my wedding dress and his suit which I paid for with the money Klaus paid to me.
"Say it." He commands. "Say you love me, Greta."
"I...I love you!"
"Good. But when next you say it, make sure you sound like you mean it." He picks my hand and takes off my engagement ring. "I'll hold onto this."
"Hand it over!"
He shakes his head. "I'll keep it safe. And don't worry, you'll go back to your little boyfriend as soon as this is over. The ring is too cheap. My mother won't believe I got it for you. Wear this one."
My eyes widen when he slides a rose gold ring encrusted with a ten karat diamond into my finger. "No way. This is too expensive."
He snatches my hand, ignoring me. "I hope you practiced the lies I told you? Your mother is an attorney and your father used to be a chemical engineer before his death. Everyone is waiting for you."
"Everyone?!"
He stops for a brief moment and nods. "Yes. My mother, sister and other people who would love to see my fiancée."
"What the hell is going on, Klaus?"
"You don't need to know. You are not my real fiancée, remember? So don't disappoint me. I'll send ten thousand dollars again if you pull this off really well."
Swallowing my fear, I nod. He smiles at me and takes my hand, leading me up the steps. I try not to trip on my heels. I am meant to act like my parents are rich. It's amusing because I am an orphan. My mother died when I was sixteen and I have never met my father.
"Right on time, Klaus, honey," A woman dressed in a royal blue dress that sweeps around her feet pushes to her feet. She is the exact copy of Klaus. Tall and extremely beautiful.
"Is she the one?"
"Yes," Klaus pulls me to his front, smiling at his mother. as he kisses the side of my head. "This is Greta Van Buren and she's the woman I've been telling you about."
The first thing this woman does is give me a once over. "Greta Van Buren. That name does sound familiar."
She doesn't sound too excited to see me and I try not to care because I am not his fiancée. "Yes. My mother is a very popular attorney. They call her The Van Buren Heroine."
She looks at me with slight disdain. "I don't think I have heard about her"
Klaus looks around the empty dining table in confusion before looking back at his mother. "Where is everyone?"
"Oh," She stops us. "Your sister had an emergency and she's not here. The elders left thirty minutes ago. The Lycan Confederate has called for a quick meeting and you need to be in attendance."
A look of worry creeps into Klaus's face. "I didn't expect tonight to turn out this way. I wanted to present her to them all for their approval."
"Not to worry. They will see her tomorrow. She needs to come with me. The heirloom will be handed over to her right now."
I don't miss the look of horror that creeps into his face. "Heirloom? You didn't tell me she was going to be given tonight. She barely even has an idea of what's happening."
She casts him a stern look. "Haven't you told her?"
"No, I haven't."
“That's your problem to deal with. Come with me, Greta."
*****
Minutes later, I am standing before his mother. Klaus is nowhere to be found and I am utterly confused as to what is happening. I try not to panic as she slips a very heavy gold ring with seven gemstones embedded in it into my finger.
"This is the wedding ring I wore when I married his father. You are not to take it off until the marriage rites have been completed and you are married to my son."
Before I can say anything, she calls for the maids by the door. "Take her to her room. She'll be there until it is time for the rites to be performed."
I follow after the maids in a daze, searching around for Klaus as we walk down towards my supposedly new room.
It's a very beautiful room but I am too confused to check it out. I remain on the bed in the dark until the sound of the door clicking open permeates into my ears three hours later.
The room is suddenly flooded with light and there he is, watching me like a hawk. There is a strange look in his eyes. He's neither smiling or frowning and it scares the hell out of me.
"What have you done, Klaus?!" I scream out in frustration. "This is not what we signed up for. I need to get home tonight! Kylian has been calling and he's worried! I told him I was going to be back today!"
"I don't think that would be possible, Greta."
I blink. "What? What are you talking about? What will not be possible? Talk to me!"
"The heirloom on your finger signifies that you have been tied to me."
"What?! This must be a joke." I burst into laughter. "Tell me it is a joke!"
"I'll see you tomorrow."
"No!" I rush after him before he gets to the door and just as I pull his wrist, he swings me to the side, pinning me against the wall with his hands wrapped around my throat.
"I said, you are tied to me, Greta! You are mine now and if you try to escape or tell my mother that all of this is a lie, I will make your life miserable. If you try to leave me, I'll kill your fiancé. You are mine, Greta. Mine!"
