I had never been here before, despite having lived in the castle for most of my life. Liz, however, seemed to know exactly where she was going.
“Here we are,” she said suddenly, her voice cutting through the darkness.
I had no idea how she managed to navigate in the pitch-black tunnel. I could barely see anything and had to crouch slightly, as the tunnel was too low for me to stand upright, while Liz moved effortlessly.
“How do you know where you’re going?” I asked.
She didn’t answer but flashed me a secretive smile over her shoulder. Moments later, she pushed aside a hidden door. As light streamed into the tunnel, she poked her head out and beckoned me to follow. We emerged into a hallway that was much brighter, thanks to the windows letting in sunlight.
