Chapter1:One Night Stand
Claire sat on the edge of Connor’s bed, wearing a bikini and nothing else. Her heart beat so loudly she could hear it. This is a terrible idea, she thought. She did not leave. Through the window, she could see the pool lights glowing blue. Two men stood beside the water. One was her brother, Max. The other was Connor Blake. She had loved Connor since she was sixteen. Tonight, she would stop hiding it. Three days ago, he had walked into her family home after three years away. He was taller. His shoulders were broader. His blonde hair was shorter, and his gray eyes were sharper than she remembered. When he smiled at her, she forgot how to breathe. He had hugged her the way he always did. Quick. Friendly. Like a sister. That hug had hurt more than she wanted to admit. Since then, she had laughed at every joke he made, even the bad ones. She had sat next to him at dinner. She had said his name softly, hoping he would look at her differently. He never did. So she made a plan. Everyone in the house went to bed early on New Year’s Eve to rest before midnight. The halls were quiet. Nobody would see her. She told herself the plan was simple. Be brave. Get his attention. The door handle turned. Claire’s stomach dropped. Light filled the room. Connor stood in the doorway, his hair wet from the pool, water running down his chest. He stopped. “Claire?” His voice was low and confused. She forced a smile. “Oh. Wow. Wrong room.” His eyes moved over her for one second, then snapped back to her face. A muscle in his jaw tightened. “What are you doing in here?” “I think I had too much to drink,” she lied. “I thought this was my room.” “You are in a bikini.” “I was going to swim,” she said quickly. She stood up and walked toward the door. Her hands were shaking. “I’ll go. Sorry.” She let her phone slip from her fingers. It hit the floor between them. Claire bent down slowly to pick it up. She felt his gaze on her. The room was silent. When she looked up, Connor was not looking away. He looked lost. Like a man who had forgotten every rule he had ever made. “Sorry again,” she whispered. She turned and reached for the door. Her fingers touched the handle. A strong hand wrapped around her wrist and pulled her back. “Connor, what are you—” He kissed her. It was not gentle. It was hungry, like he had held it back for years. Claire’s back hit the wall. Her hands gripped his wet shoulders. Every thought in her head disappeared. Then Connor pulled back, breathing hard. His gray eyes were dark. “Tell me to stop,” he said. Claire looked at him. She knew that if she said yes, this would end, and her brother’s best friend would walk out of this room and treat her like a child for the rest of her life. “Don’t stop,” she whispered. The door clicked shut behind them. Connor’s hands framed her face as if he needed to make sure she was real. His forehead rested against hers. Water from his hair dripped onto her collarbone. For a long moment neither of them spoke. The only sound was their breathing and the distant laughter floating up from the pool. “I shouldn’t,” he said, voice rough. “Max—” “I know.” Claire’s fingers curled into the damp fabric of his shirt. “I don’t care.” Something in him broke. He kissed her again, slower this time, deeper, like he was memorizing the shape of her mouth. His hands slid down her bare back, pulling her flush against him. She felt the cold of the pool water still clinging to his skin and the heat rising underneath it. When he lifted her, she wrapped her legs around his waist without thinking. He carried her to the bed and laid her down carefully, as if she might disappear if he moved too fast. Claire reached for the ties of her bikini top. Connor caught her wrists. “Let me.” He untied the knots with deliberate patience. The fabric fell away. His gaze moved over her slowly, openly, without apology. She watched his throat work as he swallowed. Then he lowered his mouth to the hollow of her throat, to the curve of her breast, to the soft place just above her navel. Every touch felt intentional. He was not rushing. He was learning her. When he finally settled between her thighs, Claire’s hands threaded through his wet hair. The world narrowed to the weight of him, the scrape of stubble against her skin, the low sound he made when she arched into him. He entered her with a controlled thrust that still stole her breath. For a second they stayed perfectly still, foreheads pressed together, eyes locked. “Claire,” he whispered, like her name was the only word left that mattered. She answered by lifting her hips. He moved then—slow at first, then deeper, finding a rhythm that made her forget the house full of family, the years of silence, the rules they were breaking. His hand found hers and pinned it to the mattress. Their fingers laced tightly. Every time he pushed into her she felt the tension in his shoulders, the way he held himself back even as he lost control. She pulled him closer, nails digging into his back, and he groaned against her neck. When she came, it was quiet and shattering. Connor followed a moment later, burying his face in her hair, his body trembling above hers. They stayed like that, tangled and breathless, while the clock downstairs chimed toward midnight. He rolled onto his side and pulled her with him. One arm stayed locked around her waist. Neither of them spoke. Claire listened to his heartbeat slow. She traced the line of his collarbone with one finger and felt him shiver. Outside, fireworks began to crackle over the pool. Soft blue light flickered across the ceiling. Connor pressed a kiss to her temple. It was gentler than anything that had come before. “I’m not going to be able to pretend this didn’t happen,” he said quietly. Claire closed her eyes. “Good.” Morning came too quickly. Claire slipped out of Connor’s room before sunrise, changed in her own bedroom, and went downstairs with the rest of the family. The house smelled like coffee and cinnamon. Her mother was laughing. Her cousins were shouting “Happy New Year!” across the living room. Everything felt normal. Nothing was. Connor came down last. He wore a gray sweater and kept his eyes on the floor. He took a seat at the far end of the table. Claire stared at her plate. Connor stared at his coffee. “Okay,” Max said, looking from one to the other. “What is going on with you two?” “Nothing,” they said at the same time. Max narrowed his eyes. “Did you have an argument?” “No,” Claire said, too quickly. “We’re just happy. New year. You know.” Connor nodded without looking up. “Very happy.” Max laughed and shook his head. “You two are strange.” Claire lifted her cup and hid behind it. Across the table, Connor finally looked at her. Just for a second. In that second, she saw everything she was afraid of. Guilt. Regret. Fear. And something else he was trying hard not to show. Then he looked away. Claire’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She glanced down at the screen. It was a message from Connor. We need to forget what happened last night. Her chest tightened. She read it again. Then she looked at the man across the table, the man who had held her like he never wanted to let go. Slowly, she typed back one word. No.
