Chapter 1
The sound of his phone beeping woke Duncan up from the darkness that seem to swallow him, picking up his phone, his eyes landed on the text message that lit up the screen. "Congratulations Mr. Stone, we are delighted to inform you that you came first place in the Medical license examination.." That was all he saw before he released a scream. How could this be? Although he had worked so hard for this exams, he barely slept, constantly burning the midnight candle and thankfully the universe was smiling at him. A small tear dropped down his eyes, he was finally taking a step forward. Clara. He needed to see her, that name brought series of pains and regrets to him. They had drained him mentally till he had no will to live anymore. Suddenly something stuck, he had written this Examination before, he could remember being married to Clara. In confusion, he hurriedly checked his calender, his mouth dropped open. "What is this?" He muttered panting hard. Has he travelled to the past or what? That wasn't possible, he recalled his last moments, he could still feel the pains as though it was yesterday. It was just too real to be a dream. His anti depressants were no longer working, the therapist wasn't willing to spare him anymore time, she kept telling him to avoid stress and have happy thoughts. But how could he? Clara and her family treated him like dirt, he was not only looked down on, he was humiliated countless times. He had foolishly loved Clara whose family was rich, he knew he wasn't in their class, yet he accepted their conditions and married her. One event that broke him even more was during Clara's father, Justin's birthday. They had told him to invite his family, excitedly he had informed them of the party. His parents arrived in their best clothes with excited smiles on their faces, but he was shocked to see them with the servants taking away plates during the party. In anger, he approached Justin, who wore a smile on his face, "Why did you do that to them?" He asked. Justin's reply broke him, "Poor people ought to know their place, they seemed to forget so I placed them where they belong." Duncan was ashamed, he blamed himself for his parents humiliation. Although they acted as though it was okay, but he knew they were embarrassed. The incident left him broken and his depression worsen, he increased his dosage but there was no changes. He was introduced to very harsh condition but he had no say, he wasn't to be seen in any official outing that involved her family. He lived like a ghost, had no say, Justin dictated their lives. Then slowly, his life began to slip out of him day after day till he breathed his last. "Is this fate?" He asked as he stared at the date on the calender, "I have been reborn." Duncan had no regrets, he didn't miss his old life, thankfully, the union was not blessed with children so there was no attachment to his past lives. There was a reason he was brought back to this crucial turning point of his life, whatever the reason was, Duncan was sure that he wasn't going to make the same mistakes again. With that thought in mind, he headed to Clara's house. "You're here." Justin sent his a disgusted look before sitting across him. "Yes sir." Duncan sent him a smile. Justin gestured to a maid, "Get me a drink." The maid nodded then hurried out to carry out her master's order. As expected, Justin who never missed an opportunity to boast about his family's wealth and assets began to speak. "I just got an invite to attend the Senator Davids birthday party." He was smiling. "You know, not everyone get the chance to attend such party, I know people who don't get the chance in a life time." He laughed. Duncan smiled at him as he listened attentively. "Here's your drink sir." The maid returned with only one glass not bothering to get something for Duncan, not that he mind though. "Last year, Clara was chosen to go on a date with his son, I mean an official date, it was on the news for weeks." Justin took a sip from his drink as his eyes scanned Duncan in disgust. "My wife and I might go on a vacation to Dubai this weekend, it costs a lot of money you know, but I can afford more than that, nothing is too small for my wife." He said with a smile. "You might be wondering why Clara won't go with us, she has a meeting with some reporters, a family with a calibre like ours gets to be on the news once in a while." Justin went on. Duncan's eyes scanned through the room, they rested on the figures that hid behind the curtains eavesdropping. "We had to hire a public relations officer, I didn't see the need to but my wife insisted that we get on-" "I don't dislike your family." Duncan said cutting Justin off. He watched as Justin's face turned sour. "What is the meaning of that?" He asked, his brows furrowed. "You should be grateful for the opportunities we provided you!" "I will be successful soon, I don't need your help." As Duncan spoke, he could feel bitterness flowing through his veins. "You scoundrel!" Justin was mad, "How dare you speak to me in that manner?" Duncan got up, "I can speak to you however I want." He replied. "Look here you-" "I know you haven't heard, turn on the news, it will air soon." Duncan said his eyes cold but a small smile playing on his lips. "I didn't come here to hear you boast, I came to tell you that I'm thankful for the experience and I will make good use of it." "You will apologize to me now!" Justin snapped, "How dare a lowly being like you speak to me with such disrespect?!" Duncan's smile widened but his eyes remained cold as he got up leaving the house. Justin was livid, "that poverty stricken rat dare speak to me in such manner." "Clara!" "Yes Dad." Clara replied as she and her mother came out of hiding. "What has gotten into that fool you call your boyfriend?" He asked. Clara shook her head, "I have no idea." "He must have lost his mind." Her mother added. "He dare speak to your father in that manner." Clara was confused, "I don't know, he seemed different." "This is what happens when you let peasants eat the food meant for the rich." Her mother said shaking her head. Just then, the news came on, the broadcaster announced the results of the just concluded medical licence examination. "There must be a mistake somewhere, this is the reason that rat tried being arrogant." He muttered to himself. "I will teach him a lesson he wouldn't forget in a hurry." Justin's anger didn't subside, he picked up his phone dialling the number of the state health department, "I have a complain to report." "There must be something wrong, Duncan would never pass the medical licence examination, he must have cheated to have that results." As he dropped the phone, a smile found it's way to his face, this was only the beginning.
