In the room next door, which was connected to the boy’s room, Nancy sat on a soft velvet sofa. She was dressed neatly and looked calm. She did not stand up when she heard the news.
“Go tell Ethan Lawson,” Nancy said coldly, “that if he still refuses to marry me, I will not calm his son.”
The maid hesitated before speaking again.
“Ma’am… the master said you are only helping the Lawson family. That is why you are paid every month.”
A loud slap echoed in the room.
Nancy slapped the maid across the face.
“Who do you think you are?” Nancy shouted angrily.
“How dare you speak to me like that? Get out!”
The maid held her face and ran away crying.
Nancy laughed softly to herself.
“Everything is going exactly as I planned,” she whispered.
She walked into the young master’s room quietly. From her sleeve, she took out a small needle and pushed it into the boy’s arm.
“Do what I say,” she whispered gently.
“Go to sleep now.”
The boy slowly stopped moving. His anger faded. He climbed onto the bed and fell asleep like a puppet.
What no one knew was that the medicine did not heal him.
It only controlled him.
Each time the sickness returned, it would be worse than before.
“When I become Mrs. Lawson,” Nancy said coldly,
“I will get rid of you.”
At Lawson Corporation, an assistant rushed into the CEO’s office.
“You are late,” a cold voice said.
“I’m sorry, sir,” the assistant replied quickly. “The traffic was bad.”
Ethan Lawson lifted his eyes slowly.
“Or maybe you are just slow,” he said. “Which one is it?”
“I—”
“When you are done making excuses,” Ethan interrupted,
“go check on my son.”
“He is asleep,” the assistant answered.
Ethan frowned. “Nancy helped him?”
“She threatened you first,” the assistant said.
“But she helped him afterward.”
Ethan’s face turned dark.
“I have new information,” the assistant said quickly.
“A doctor from abroad has arrived in Mainly City.”
“Find him,” Ethan ordered.
“You have two hours.”
“What if he refuses?” the assistant asked carefully.
Ethan’s eyes were cold and sharp.
“Then you’re dead.”
Cold sweat ran down the assistant’s back.
“Yes, sir.”
“Also,” Ethan added, “check his background.”
Everyone in Mainly City knew one thing.
Anyone who offended Ethan Lawson was finished.
He was cold. He was cruel. He showed no mercy.
Even though he was only in his early thirties, he was tall, handsome, and powerful. Many women tried to get close to him, hoping to become special.
All of them failed.
The only woman he tolerated was Nancy—and only because of his son.
That night, Ethan returned home. The first person he saw was his grandmother sitting in the living room. Nancy sat beside her, acting close and caring.
“You must marry her,” his grandmother said angrily.
“If not for Nancy, your son would be dead.”
Ethan looked at Nancy coldly.
“This is the last time my marriage will be mentioned,” he said.
“I found a new doctor for my son.”
He added, “You don’t need to pretend anymore.
Even if you die for my son, my heart will never change.”
He turned and walked upstairs.
Nancy clenched her fists tightly.
“Useless old woman,” she muttered.
“My time in this house is running out.”
Her eyes turned dark.
“Who is this doctor?” she whispered.
“And how dare he try to replace me?”
Ethan walked slowly to his son’s room.
He pushed the door open and stepped inside.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
Jay sat on the bed. He looked small and weak.
“Nothing,” Jay said softly.
Ethan frowned. “Why are you just sitting there? Are you okay?”
Jay nodded a little but did not speak.
He climbed onto the bed and lay down, curling into himself.
Ethan felt something was wrong.
Jay was never this quiet.
“Did you eat?” Ethan asked.
There was no reply.
After a short silence, Ethan turned and walked out.
“Good night,” he said, closing the door.
But he still looked worried.
Back in his room, Ethan picked up his phone.
“Assistant Pei,” he said, “have you contacted her?”
“I’m about to do that now, sir,” Pei replied.
“Is there anything you want me to say?”
“Yes,” Ethan said coldly.
“Do not tell her that I am Jay’s father. Even if she asks.”
“Then what should I say?” Pei asked.
“Say the child belongs to a friend,” Ethan replied.
“I don’t want any woman using my son to become Mrs. Lawson.”
Pei paused. “Sir… she is married.”
“A married woman?” Ethan said calmly.
“That makes things easier.”
The call ended.
On the other side, Ava slowly put down her phone.
“Accept the proposal,” she said softly.
A small smile appeared on her lips.
“This is a good chance,” she whispered.
“I can enter his house, find clues, and learn the truth about my mother…
before I start my revenge.”
In the next room, two children were talking quietly.
“Brother, what did you find out?” Jane asked excitedly.
Felix crossed his arms.
“He has a strong background. He’s single. He has a five-year-old son.
People say he is cold, scary, and dangerous.”
Jane pouted. “But someone bad can’t be as handsome as my daddy.”
Felix’s eyes widened. “Daddy? Why would you call him that?”
“Because he looks like you,” Jane said seriously.
“Can’t you see it?”
