The Return
“Grayson, my sister is back.” Those five words shattered the calm in the car. “My friend saw her at the airport yesterday. She is back, G.” Time froze for Grayson Montclaire. Seven years. Seven years since he had sent her away. Since their marriage had crumbled. 'Please, don't send me away from you!' 'Please, believe me, I did nothing wrong!' 'Grey! I will die without you!' 'Grey! I didn't kill your dad!' 'Greyson Montclaire! You are ruthless! You have ruthlessly trampled on my, Maya Rose Harrington's, love. Let's never see each other! However, if we ever did, then let's treat each other as enemies because you and I will never be strangers. Remember my words, you and I will never be strangers.' Grayson looked out the car window, paparazzi lights flashing like a storm of fireflies. “Let's hope we never cross paths again.” ****** A few hours before, A young woman stood outside the airport, the breeze brushing against her face as she took in the scent of the city. It was the same city that once broke her heart. The flashbacks of the day came back to her. The humiliation. The betrayal. The rejection that she suffered at the hands of the only man she loved. Her eyes were calm, but something burned quietly behind them. She whispered, “Greyson Montclair… I’m back.” Her fingers curled into fists at her sides. “Let the countdown to your demise begin.” ****** A few minutes later, black coloured roll Royce opened, and moments later, a man dressed in a royal blue suit emerged. His gait was majestic and his aura, glorious. His upright posture talks about his noble upbringing, and the air surrounding him made him appear prominent and admirable. He was none other than Greyson Montclair, President of Montclair Enterprises. Today, the media was in a frenzy, two of City A’s most powerful empires, the Montclairs and the Prescotts, had just announced a joint venture. The project was to be led by a mysterious architect named Rose had the industry buzzing. Greyson Montclair and Archer Prescott, long-time rivals known for sabotaging each other at every opportunity, had joined hands. And just hours earlier, news of Archer’s engagement to Greyson’s sister had gone viral. Enemies turned allies? What was this sudden twist? Did Mysterious Rose make it possible? But who was this Rose? “Mr. Montclair, when are you marrying Talia Harrington?” Greyson ignored the silly questions and walked inside the venue with his date, Talia Harrington, whose eyes were anticipating the answer to the question being asked. Inside, chaos brewed. “Bro, thank God,” Noah Montclaire muttered as Greyson arrived. “Rose just backed out of the press conference.” Greyson's jaw tightened. “She never attends banquets.” “She vanished again,” Noah hissed. “The media is going to kill our project before it's even born.” Madame Guilia Montclair murmured, “Perhaps picking up this project was a mistake.” “Let bygones be bygones,” Greyson said quietly. His mother smiled coldly. “That's exactly what we have been doing for seven years.” Noah erupted again. “Archer is screwing with us. I swear I'll break his—” “Noah,” Greyson snapped. “He is marrying Amelia. We don't need a scene.” The tension didn't lift. Even Talia Harrington's sweet arrival couldn't cut it. “Aunt Ruby,” Talia greeted softly, bowing in respect. Spotting the Montclair brothers, she smiled. “Noah. So nice to see you.” How could she miss the chance to appear beside Greyson, especially with the world watching, waiting for their engagement? She was desperate to marry him. But the man she longed for had never once looked at her that way, and she knew exactly why. That witch had ruined her every chance eight years ago. But this time, she'd get what she wanted. By hook or by crook. “How are you, Talia?” Mrs. Montclair smiled warmly. Ruby had once adored Talia's elder sister. Now, all she felt for her was disdain. “You're looking pretty as always,” Noah added. He'd always treated Talia like a younger sister, thanks to her bond with Amelia. Talia tucked her hair behind her ear, shy and poised. “Thank you, Noah.” Then she looked at Greyson, but he remained silent. Because he hadn't looked at anyone like that since her. Then Archer appeared beside him, smugly, “Congrats on the engagement, Montclair.” “Shouldn’t I wish you, brother-in-law?” Greyson replied coolly. Archer grinned. “Don't you know about yours? Your grandmother plans to announce it tonight.” Before Greyson could react, Lillian Montclair had already taken the stage. “You better not be joking, Archer,” Greyson warned, but the man had vanished into the crowd. And Greyson knew that Archer wasn't lying. Lillian had long wanted Talia to be his bride. But never had she gone this far. His family adored Talia, including his mother. At thirty-two, he was under constant pressure to start a family. But how could he remarry when his first marriage had ended in ruin? Why Talia? His ex-wife's half-sister, of all people? When Greyson arrived on the floor, the room had fallen silent. All eyes were on Lillian Montclair, who was holding a microphone in her hand. Lillian had waited seven years for this moment. Talia, her chosen granddaughter-in-law, was finally within reach. “Good evening, everyone,” she began. Montclair Industries has shared two wonderful announcements tonight, so I thought, why not one more?” She smiled wickedly. “Tonight, I'm delighted to announce that my eldest grandson, who has led our family with unmatched excellence. He has found the woman who will stand beside him through life's storms.” Gasps swept the room. Lillian continued her speech, much to everyone's speculation," No one knows better than our generation the importance of a right woman by a man's side. Only a right woman can lead a man to further success." A fond smile bloomed on her face as she announced, "And that beautiful and incredible woman is no one else but Mr Harrington's beloved daughter. A round of applause to welcome Miss Harrington!" The lights of the surroundings dimmed suddenly, and a tall, slender and elegant figure entered the doorway, making people awestruck. Her face was still not clear, but from her figure and gait, it could be estimated that the person was elegant and beautiful. And who could be this much more elegant and beautiful than Talia? Talia Harrington was a supermodel, known for her seductive beauty and Rose. Or that's what the audience thought. When the lights fell on her face, Greyson's grandmother gasped loudly. And so did everyone else. The only exception was Archer, who controlled himself from bursting into laughter. Truly, it was an impossible task to do when all you wanted was to laugh and laugh and laugh until he was left with no laugh to laugh. However, it was a pity that he just couldn't. He, too, had to act all shocked and troubled like the whole of the Montclair family. For a long time, Greyson didn't know what was happening around him. He looked at everyone's confused, startled and angry faces. It was only when a soft figure crashed into his back and wrapped her warm arms around his waist did he came out of a stupor. This feeling of softness against his hard body was familiar to him. Way too familiar. His youth was spent in those arms. This soft fragrance of lavender mingled with cinnamon reminded him of the mistakes he had committed in his teenage years. The same mistakes, he wouldn't mind committing ones again. He blinked his eyes as a word escaped his lips like a bitter taste. "Maya?" The beautiful woman hugging his back smiled against his body and spoke in a sickly coquettish voice, "Grey, I missed you so much." Immediately, Greyson caught her hand and removed her body that was attached to his back. His brown eyes stared right back into her pitch-black fiery orbs. Greyson was looking at her in confusion and bewilderment, certainly not in anger and shock like everyone else. Yes, he was just as shocked as everyone else. But most of all, he was confused. What the hell was his ex-wife doing in front of him after seven whole years? Did he not tell her never to appear in front of him? Who called her here? Why?! Standing there as an embodiment of elegance, she wasn't the same woman from seven years ago. She had always been beautiful, but the wildness and wickedness flaring in her eyes masked by phoney coyness, it was not present all those years ago. The good wife was gone. Before them stood the ex-wife, with vengeance flowing in her veins.
