CHAPTER 1: The Proposal Plan
Lily's eyes sparkled as she gazed at the engagement ring lying in a box of velvet. Valentine's Day was the perfect day to propose to Alex, her boyfriend of two years. She had planned the entire evening, from the candle-light dinner to the sunset view of the city. As she got dressed, Lily couldn't help but imagine Alex's reaction. Would he first be surprised? Then overjoyed? They would share a romantic kiss, and their families would be thrilled. Especially hers, as they were finally about to meet the love of her life. She could almost hear the sound of the waves crashing, the scent of the saltwater filling the air and the warmth of the tropical sun on thier skin. The Maldives, here we come!
With a final glance in the mirror, Lily grabbed her purse and headed out the front door. The drive to Alex's office felt like an eternity, her mind racing with excitement and anticipation. She rehearsed her proposal speech, perfecting the words in her mind. But as she arrived at Alex's office, her excitement was short-lived. She caught him f**king his assistant, Emily. The scene unfolded in slow motion, like a nightmare she couldn't wake up from. Lily's world crumbled. She felt a sharp pain in her chest, as if her heart was being squeezed. Her eyes stung, and her breath caught in her throat.
She tried to process what she was seeing, but her brain refused to accept it. She turned to leave, but her feet felt heavy as if stuck to the ground. The sound of her own heartbeat thundered in her ers and the world around her began to blur. She stumbled, her hand grasping for something to hold on to, but there was nothing. Just as she thought things couldn't get any worse, her phone rang, shattering the silence. She fumbled for iy, her heart racing, and answered without looking at the screen. "Hello?" she whispered, her voice shaking. "Lily, it's Sarah from the Maldives resort," a cheerful voice said on the other end. "I'm calling to confirm your booking for the holiday. We've got your rooms ready, and I wanted to let you know that everything is set for your arrival tomorrow."
Lily's mind went blank. She had completely forgotten about the holiday she had booked with her family. They were all looking forward to it, and to meeting Alex, and now... "Uhmm yes, thank you," Lily stammered, trying to process her emotions. "I'll...I'll be there." As she hung up, the reality of her situation hit her like a ton of bricks. Her boyfriend was cheating on her, and she was supposed to go on a family holiday tomorrow. What was she going to do? Lily took a deep breath, trying to gather her thoughts. She couldn't let her family down. She would go to the Maldives and deal with her heartbreak later. But what about Alex? She didn't have the guts to confront him right now.
As she stood there, frozen in time, a stranger walked past her, bumping into her. The engagement ring box slipped from her hand and the ring fell out, rolling across the pavement. The stranger stopped, picked up the ring and looked at her with a curious expression. "Is this yours?" Lily's eyes met his, and for a moment, time stood still... Her heart skipped a beat as she took in the strangers' rugged features and piercing blue eyes. He was tall, dark and handsome, with a strong jawline and a hint of a smile. "Y-yes." She stammered, feeling a flush rise to her cheeks. "Thank you." The stranger handed her the ring, his fingers brushing against hers, sending a spark of electricity through her body.
Lily immediately felt a strange connection to this stranger, as if they had known each other for years. But then reality kicked in, and she remembered her situation. She was standing on the street, holding an engagement ring, and feeling attracted to a stranger. What was wrong with her? Lily shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. She needed to get away from here, and fast. "Thank you again," she said, turning to leave. The stranger's eyes narrowed, and he took a step closer to her. "You're welcome," he said, his voice low and smooth. "But aren't you forgetting something?" Lily's heart skipped a beat as she met his gaze. What was he talking about? And then she saw it. The engagement ring was still on her finger, and the stranger was looking at it with a knowing smile. Lily's face burned with embarrassment as she realized what had just happened.
She had been so caught up in her own heartbreak that she hadn't even noticed the stranger's gaze lingering on her finger. The stranger's eyes sparkled with amusement as he took a step closer to her. "I think you might be looking for someone to say 'I do' to," he said. Lily's heart skipped a beat as she met his gaze. What was he suggesting? Did he think she was proposing to him? She shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. "No, no, it's not that," she stammered, feeling her face grow even hotter. The stranger's smile widened, and he took another step closer to her. "Are you sure?" he asked, his voice dripping in amusement. "Because I'm happy to help out if you need a willing partner."
Lily's eyes widened as she realized what he was offering. He thought she was trying to propose to him, and he was willing to play along. For a moment she was tempted to take it, but then she remembered her situation.
