“I did tell you about it, when I said Pepper and I were attacked.”
“You didn’t say the shed was still there! I thought you’d destroyed it, like someone with sense.” Jackson dashed to the door and swung it open. I was busy thinking about Pepper dying after we went there. Burning it was the last thing on my mind.
“We’re going now?”
“Yes! I’m going to grab Mitch and Sally; go get Pepper.” Jackson ran out of the room, and I groaned as I stood. Dread pooled in my gut. Pepper can’t go; it isn’t safe. But I don’t want to leave her here either.
I left the room and headed to the spot where we’d played yesterday. Pepper and Lily’s laughter rang through the air and warmed my heart. Melanie stood, watching the other kids play. I nodded to her as I passed by and went to join them under the tree.
