Chapter 16 Running the Risk It was getting daylight when the guard returned with the horses. The canyon was narrow and the horses had kept a good trot in single file down the only trail leading out. The guard had caught the last horse in the string after about ten minutes of trying. He threw a half hitch over its nose and rode it bareback. He caught up with the other horses not long after, but couldn’t get around them to the lead horse. It forced him to wait until he came to a place where the canyon widened enough to get past the string to the lead horse. He arrived as the camp began to awaken.
