Chapter1
The Celebration
Edward Jason stood inside the grand ballroom, smiling with courtesy as human beings congratulated him. The room becomes full of laughter and bright lights. Waiters moved among the guests, carrying trays of champagne and sensitive appetizers. Edward wore his finest health, but even the high priced material couldn’t make him feel snug tonight.
He had labored so tough for this moment. After years of conflict, he had established himself. No longer the failure his own family used to whisper about, Edward turned into now the top of a successful employer. However, while he glanced at the expressions of the prosperous and influential, he sensed that something was missing.
Clara, his spouse, stood next to him, her hand lightly placed on his arm. She donned a mild blue dress that made her appear angelic. Her mild smile brightened the spirits of all those she talked to. Edward checked out her, his heart constricting with feeling.
He nodded, forcing a smile. “Just taking it all in.”
Clara gave his arm a mild squeeze. “You deserve this. Don’t forget about that.”
Her words eased some of the anxiety in his chest. Edward leaned down and kissed her temple, his lips brushing her smooth pores and skin. “I wouldn’t have made it without you,” he whispered.
Clara’s cheeks flushed, and she or he smiled shyly. “Go talk to your visitors. They’re here for you.”
As Edward came back to the gang, Clara stepped away. He watched her walk toward the balcony, her moves swish and calm. She constantly liked to take a second to herself on occasions like this. Edward is well-known how she by no means craved interest, even though she deserved all of it.
But tonight, something felt off. There changed into a frightened energy within the way Clara moved as she turned into wearing a heavy mystery. Curiosity tugged at Edward.
He accompanied her outside.
The balcony becomes quiet, the cool nighttime air a welcome comfort from the noise inside. Edward stopped in his tracks when he noticed Clara. She wasn’t on my own.
A man in a darkish fit stood close to her, protecting a folder. Clara seemed worried, her fingers clasped tightly in front of her. Edward couldn’t listen to the whole thing they had been announcing, but one sentence prevented his heart.
“It’s completed,” Clara said softly. “He’ll never understand.”
Edward’s stomach turned. His chest tightened as he watched the person hand Clara the folder before slipping away into the shadows. Clara turned around, startled to peer at Edward's status there.
“Edward,” she said, her voice shaking barely earlier than she compelled a smile. “You scared me. What are you doing out right here?”
“I should ask you the same question,” Edward replied, looking to keep his voice calm.
Clara hesitated. “Just dealing with a few charity paintings,” she stated, holding the folder tightly in opposition to her chest.
Edward stared at her, his thoughts racing. Clara had continually been honest with him or so he notion. Tonight, she felt like a stranger.
Without every other phrase, Clara walked lower back into the ballroom. Edward stood there, watching the spot where she was. His palms clenched into fists. What became Clara hiding from him?
The celebration changed into still in complete swing whilst Edward went back inside. Clara moved through the crowd, her smile vibrant and captivating as she spoke to the visitors. Edward couldn’t prevent watching her, attempting to find any sign that something was incorrect.
Before he could approach her, the room grew quiet. Edward turned towards the doorway, his heart sinking.
Sophia Carter had arrived.
She lingered inside the entrance, her pink gown clinging to her form flawlessly. Her black hair cascaded in waves throughout her shoulders, and her eyes glittered with self-warranty. As she entered, human beings murmured, their eyes monitoring her every motion.
Edward tensed up. He hadn’t laid eyes on Sophia for years, yet he hadn’t erased her from memory.
Sophia had formerly been part of his lifestyle. Her father, Harold Carter, rescued Edward's family from financial ruin whilst Edward turned looking to set up his popularity. All expected Edward could marry Sophia, yet he opted for Clara instead. The refusal had damaged their households’ bond, and Harold had by no means pardoned him.
At that second, Sophia began heading without delay toward him.
“Edward,” she remarked, her tone velvety and welcoming, yet her grin changed into a point. “It has been quite a while.”
“Sophia,” Edward responded, maintaining a calm tone. “What has led you to this location?”
Sophia leaned her head to the facet, her eyes glowing with delight. "I couldn't pass up the risk to rejoice in your success." “People are discussing the development you’ve made.”
"Thanks," Edward spoke back shortly.
Sophia's grin grew broader. "Yet nonetheless so serious." "I observe that marriage hasn’t altered that thing for you." Her eyes darted to Clara, who changed position on the alternative side of the room.
Edward’s jaw tightened. “What do you want, Sophia?”
Sophia laughed softly, the sound sending a chill down Edward’s spine. “Relax, Edward. I'm not right here to cause trouble. Not tonight, at least.”
Before he may want to respond, Harold Carter joined them. The older man’s presence changed into as commanding as ever. He greeted Edward with an organization handshake, his smile well mannered however his eyes were cold.
“Edward,” Harold said. “Congratulations. It’s precise to see Jason call thriving once more.”
“Thank you, Harold,” Edward replied.
Harold leaned in barely, decreasing his voice. “But don’t overlook where you came from. Or who helped you while you had nothing.”
Edward nodded, his stomach twisting with unease. Harold’s words have been a reminder of the debt his own family owed the Carters, a debt Edward concept he had repaid lengthy ago.
Harold stepped away, but Sophia lingered. She looked at Edward with an expression he couldn’t quite examine component enjoyment, part assignment.
“You’re going to want me extra than you observed,” she stated softly. Then she walked away, leaving Edward status by herself.
The rest of the night passed in a blur. Edward’s mind was spinning with questions. What is Sophia planning? And why had Clara been so secretive in advance?
By the time the visitors left, the ballroom became quiet. Edward observed his status using the balcony once more, staring out at the town lights.
Clara had long gone to bed without pronouncing an awful lot. He thought about the folder she had held so tightly. He thought about Sophia’s cryptic words and Harold’s warning.
Edward pulled out his cell phone and called Victoria, his younger sister.
“Edward?” she spoke back, her voice sleepy. “It’s past due. What’s wrong?”
“I want your assistance,” Edward said, his voice heavy with frustration and resolution.
“With what?”
Edward glanced returned at the empty ballroom, his jaw set. “Finding out the fact.”
As he ended the decision, a notification popped up on his disp
lay. It became a message from an unknown quantity:
“Stay out of it, otherwise you’ll regret it.”
