Chapter 1.
I slumped on my mop, exhausted after cleaning the pack house's sumptuous halls for the better part of the day. When I arrived at work at five in the morning, the sun had hardly risen; this was no typical day. There was a big celebration coming up, and the mansion needed to be flawless. A muscular warrior suddenly brushed by me, shoving me purposefully and laughing defiantly as I staggered to keep my position. "You filthy servant, get out of my way! He growled, "Get to work, you lazy scoundrel!" I murmured, "Yes, sir, sorry, sir," with my shoulders stooped and my gaze downcast. This made it simpler to stay out of conflict with those who are stronger than I am. This wasn't how life had always been. I used to be the Black Moon pack's Alpha's daughter, not a slave. Born soon after the death of our mother, the former Luna, my twin sister Esther and I were our father's sole offspring. Our father's sorrow was so great that he was unable to look at us since our faces made him think of our mother. Therefore, our grandparents raised us instead. On our eighteenth birthday, in front of the entire pack, during the shifting ceremony, everything changed. We became full-fledged members of the Black Moon pack after this occurrence. That day, I shuddered to think of how my father had looked at me with hatred and scorn while beaming proudly at Esther. Esther changed into a stunning silvery-white wolf with ease, but I could not break free from my human form and was left in front of the pack to face their scrutiny. That night, everything changed drastically. I had not seen my wolf emerge, but Esther had, one that looked very like our father's. This small distinction completely changed our roles in the pack: Esther was accepted back into our father's fold as his real daughter, while I was punished for my alleged shortcomings and left out altogether. The harsh words that my father had spoken to me were still fresh in my memory, hurting as much as if he had said them in front of the whole pack. "Someone like you is useless to me. You are not my daughter; you are a failure. You are not deserving of the title "daughter of the Alpha." For runts like you, there is just one place." That declaration marked the beginning of the end for me. In the blink of an eye, I was banished from my grandmother's comfortable house and placed in the desolate, filthy Omegas' quarters, where I was forced to serve as a slave. I had to quickly become accustomed to this harsh new world and learn how to take care of myself, my responsibilities, and social hierarchies. However, this wasn't the worst alteration or betrayal I went through. No, my twin sister Esther, who is my own flesh and blood, was the one who truly betrayed me. Overnight, she became someone entirely different. She basked in the affection and pride of our father, as well as the benefits of her new position, as the official Alpha's daughter. She did not miss a chance to remind me of the glaring difference in status between us. Although my sister was never a saint, she became extremely vicious after she gained actual power, and I ended up becoming her main target. The day following our birthdays together, she called me into her opulent room at the pack home, flashing a devious smile. There, with calculated cruelty, she told me I was going to be her personal maid. She didn't have to explain why; it was just a means to make sure I was always faced with the glaring difference between her lavish life of comfort, luxury, and the best things, because she had a wolf and I didn't. I never thought I'd be here, helping her while I tidied up the house in preparation for her engagement celebration. The wedding, which was scheduled to occur under a bright full moon, was just a few days away. Her destiny was to marry Johnny Owen, the nearby Red Moon pack's Alpha's son. Both packs looked forward to it much, as it marked the beginning of a new partnership in addition to their union. This wedding was arranged since traditionally girls were expected to marry and could not take on their father's role. I remembered Johnny from our days in school. Because of how close our packs were, we went to the same high school. He was a senior when I started my freshman year, having been my classmate for four years. Johnny was the epitome of perfection, with a flawless As in taking advanced classes, leading the basketball team, and being the centre of attention for all students who own uteruses. And to top it all off, he was incredibly humble and compassionate. He was nearly too good, if good could exist at all. But then I thought back to the day after Esther and I had our shifting ceremony, when he suddenly stopped recognising me and avoided me at all means. He had behaved as though I was invisible the few times he had been to our house. I couldn't really hold him responsible; after all, who would want to hang together with a wolfless outsider like me? "Lily!" I was startled out of my reverie by Mrs. Dawson, the head Omega, who roared from across the corridor. "Are you finished yet?" "Almost done!" I answered, rushing through my assignment. It was a foolish assumption to assume that Omegas and slaves would have some friendship. Instincts won out, even among the lowest-ranking wolves. Be it omega or not, there was only one constant in the wolf hierarchy: subjugate your adversaries. And Mrs. Dawson was a very good player of that cruel game. When the men's work fell short of her standards, I knew all too well what she had them do. Several times, I had been the unwilling object of their unwanted approaches. I smothered a shiver and returned my attention to the work at hand, polishing the parquet until it shone in the low light. Now that the floor was perfectly clean, I hurriedly put the mop and bucket in the basement. I had a fleeting thought: maybe I could sneak in a little nap. Not many slaves like us had access to beds; the fortunate ones had received a bedroll and sometimes a pillow as presents from my grandma. Those things felt like priceless indulgences in the middle of this suffering. I headed for my bedroll, wishing for a little relief from the pain in my shoulders and back. I was ready to settle down when Mrs. Dawson gave me an order that dashed my hopes. "Up, everyone!" The packhouse reverberated with her voice. "The Red Moon have arrived!" I briefly closed my eyes, lamenting the passing of my much-needed break. It was clear that day would bring me no peace. "The Alpha wants everyone to welcome them outside! Now move!" I sighed with resignation as I got out of my makeshift bed and walked slowly towards the doorway to join the procession. Mrs. Dawson suddenly grabbed hold of my forearm and jerked me in her direction. "Make sure nobody sees you, runt," she growled. "You don't want to incur the Alpha's wrath - or Miss Esther's." To put it simply, my father and Esther wanted me to stay under the radar and not cause any problems. They pretended that I didn't exist in order to hide the disgrace the family was experiencing. I pretended to nod obediently and to be subservient, and at last Mrs. Dawson let go of me. It was not going to be a good meeting.
