The First Encounter
Kaia Wells dodged customers as she stealthily moved behind the bain-marie of croissants, trying so hard not to collide with any of the bartenders brewing coffee and the tired waitresses serving the never-ending customers seated at the table while clutching her tray of croissants carefully.
The smell of freshly brewed coffee and pastries filled the air, but Kaia's mind was elsewhere. She was thinking about the stack of bills her mother couldn't pay due to her illness and the pending medical bills she'd yet to receive.
As she reached her section, the hot section of the kitchen cafeteria, Chef Red stormed out in anger, his face as red as his name. "Kaia, what took you so long? Do you think I have the whole eternity to spend making damn simple sandwiches?" he hollered in anger and snatched the tray of croissants from Kaia. Kaia cowered in fear.
"The eggs you delivered to my section are rotten! Not a single one is good! Now take these and show them to the operations manager, then get new ones from the storekeeper!" He barked again as he handed over the stainless bowl to Kaia.
Kaia's eyes widened as she clutched the bowl of rotten eggs to her chest.
"Now!" Chef Red screamed again, jolting her back to her senses. She nodded hastily and moved swiftly away from the kitchen. This was not what she needed. Another problem to deal with. She already had a lot on her desk. Her mother was fading away before her eyes and there was nothing she could do about it despite being the sole caregiver.
She was so engrossed in her thoughts that she collided with a tall, broad-shouldered man just at the entrance of the office. The stainless container flew out of her hands, splattering rotten eggs everywhere.
"Watch where you're going!" the man growled, his white suit stained with rotten egg yolks.
Kaia apologized profusely while frantically trying to help him clean up the mess on his suit with her hands as tears rolled down her eyes. She knew she was in deep trouble.
Her tears and action seemed to dissipate the man's brewing anger as he looked at her.
"I'm so sorry" Kaia repeated.
"It's fine, just be more careful next time" he said with a softer tone as he handed her a handkerchief.
"Are you okay?" he asked, with a much softer voice.
"Yes, I'm fine, sorry again for the accident" she responded tearfully. She noticed the man had a domineering and dark presence. There was just something dangerous about the man that she couldn't figure out yet.
The man nodded curtly and turned to leave. "Make sure it doesn't happen again."
As he walked away, Kaia heaved a sigh of relief. That was close. Today must be her luckiest day. She quickly gathered some of the broken eggs in the bowl and headed to the operations manager's office. She called some cafeteria cleaners to help out with the floor on her way to the office.
The operations manager, Mrs Nelly, was understanding but firm. "Kaia, you need to be more careful and less distracted. This is the third time this week you've had issues with eggs."
Kaia nodded, feeling a sense of frustration. She knew she wasn't perfect, but she was trying her best.
After discussing the issue with Mrs Nelly, Kaia felt defeated. She knew she had to be more careful so she doesn't end up losing her job. She knew she was indeed getting distracted, as Mrs Nelly stated, but she couldn't help it. Not when her mother was on the brink of passing away.
As she walked towards the storekeeper's section, her thoughts continued to linger with her ailing mother. She sincerely doesn't know how long she could continue caring for her.
She requested new eggs from the storekeeper and headed quickly to her section to a fuming Chef Red.
"Where the f**k have you been?" chef Red barked at her.
"I-I-uhmmm" Kaia stuttered, not knowing what to say.
"I said, what took you so long, Kaia?! I have six pending breakfast orders, and I was waiting for the damn eggs!" he screamed again.
Kaia was too frightened to utter a word.
"I'm really sorry sir" she didn't know what else to say.
"Sorry for yourself, Miss!" he hollered and snatched the crate of eggs from the frightened Kaia.
The rest of her shift went the same way it started. Full of unnecessary complaints and avoidable mistakes.
Soon after, Kaia closed and was on her way home when Chef Toby, the kitchen manager walked up to her as she was about to enter the lift.
"Here you go", Ms Toby said, handing over a medium-sized plastic bag to Kaia.
"Good evening, Ms Toby" Kaia said, and quickly collected the bag from her.
"Thank you so much" she said, hugging her tightly. "I really, truly appreciate it".
"You're welcome, Kaia. I know you had a tough day with Chef Red. This is just my own way of cheering you up", Chef Toby said sincerely.
They both entered the lift and parted ways shortly after. Kaia checked the bag, and it was twisted bread alongside some left-over cake slices.
"At least mom would have something for breakfast", Kaia murmured under her breath as she walked down the bushy road leading to her house.
As much as Kaia was frustrated, she just couldn't shake off the foreboding feeling that something was about to change in her life although she didn't know how and when that was going to happen.
As she walked home, Kaia's thoughts drifted back to the mysterious man she had collided with. Who was he? And why did she feel like their encounter was more than just a simple accident?
She couldn't shake off the feeling that their paths would cross again. Kaia quickened her pace, anxious to get home and check on her mother.
When she arrived, her mother was sleeping, her frail body a stark contrast to the vibrant woman Kaia remembered from her childhood. Kaia's heart ached as she watched her mother's labored breathing.
She spent the evening preparing dinner and paying bills, her mind racing with worries about the future. As she sat down to eat, Kaia's phone buzzed with a text from her best friend, Talia.
"Hey, girl! How was your day?" Talia asked.
Kaia hesitated, unsure how to share her struggles. "It was okay," she replied, trying to sound cheerful.
Talia sensed something was wrong. "What's going on, Kaia? You can tell me."
Kaia sighed, feeling a lump form in her throat. Maybe she could confide in Talia...
"Talia I'm.."
Just then, a text message popped up on Kaia's phone, forcing her to pause.
"Your little dirty secret is not safe anymore. Meet me at the old cafeteria tomorrow by 5am."
Kaia's heart quickened as she stared at the dark message.
