They had been drinking well into the night, their breaths condensing from the biting cold as Caleb silently sat, drowning himself in wine and rum until the early hours of the morning. His eyes held so many troubling emotions that I could depict as I sat with Ben near the figure head, having spoken about why Caleb hadn’t told the crew of my being a mermaid yet. My eyes darted toward the steps that lead to the bow when Caleb stood, his cup cluttering to the deck of the ship as he stumbled, his hand gripping the railing to help catch himself. I could tell that he was drunk and shot up, ignoring Ben’s words as I hurried to the bottom of the steps just in time to catch Caleb, feeling his weight slump onto me when he staggered down the remaining few steps. “I’ve got you” I whispered, ducking
