Once she finally stepped up to her apartment, Penny inserted the apartment key and let the old cracked door swing open, keeping her tired eyes on the old, decrepit floor beneath her. The dimly lit hallway cast eerie shadows on the worn-out carpet, and the stale smell of neglect hung in the air.
“I’m home…” Penny grumbled quietly, letting the door creak to a close behind her. Her footsteps echoed through the empty hallway as she made her way to the living room. Penny stood by the door for a moment, the apartment in complete silence, before she finally looked up from the floor to see Johnny sitting on the couch with his eyes to the floor and his hands folded, almost as if he were in a complete daze.
Penny's heart sank as she took in the sight of Johnny. The room seemed heavy with unspoken tension, and Assistant could sense that something was deeply troubling the person. Assistant moved closer, their footsteps barely making a sound on the worn-out carpet. Gently, Assistant reached out and touched the person's shoulder, hoping to break them out of their reverie.
Penny took another step, her heart pounding in her chest and the silence in the room was deafening, it made her feel uneasy.
“Johnny?” she murmured quietly, almost feeling a little nervous. Johnny had never been so quiet when Penny came back from work. He was always cheerful and happy and affectionate. But today he was just sitting there. Quietly. Distractedly.
Penny noticed the distant look in his eyes, She wanted to reach out to him, but she hesitated, unsure of how to approach.
Johnny managed to look up at Penny after some time, the expression on the blondie’s face so indescribable that the ravenhead couldn’t help but frown. His heart sank further as he saw the mixture of concern and confusion in her eyes.
“Hey, Penny. Can we talk?” Johnny shifted on the couch uncomfortably, his fingers nervously tapping against his thigh.
Penny's heart skipped a beat. She nodded, her eyes never leaving his face.
Penny felt her stomach lurch at the combination of words. Talk? What did they need to talk about? Not to mention the fact that Johnny had called his girlfriend by her government name. Where were the nicknames? Where was 'baby girl'? The absence of his usual terms of endearment sent a wave of unease crashing over her.
Her mind raced. Had he fallen out of love with her? Was there someone else? Panic threatened to consume her, but she fought to maintain a composed facade.
Penny's mind was filled with questions, causing her anxiety to increase. They had been dating for a year and living together for six months, but she had never seen that look on his face before...
As she studied Johnny's expression, her heart sank further. His gaze held a weight of a thousand untold stories, hinting at hidden struggles. The suffocating silence in the room intensified Penny's unease as he grappled with inner turmoil.
“S-sure…” Penny struggled to say before slowly stepping over to her boyfriend and taking a seat on the couch beside him. Her heart raced with anticipation and worry, unsure of what would unfold in their conversation. She could feel the weight of the moment hanging heavily in the air.
As she settled next to him, their shoulders barely touching, Penny turned her gaze towards Johnny. His distant eyes reflected a labyrinth of thoughts, creating tension between them, longing for past warmth.
Once again, the room was filled with an uncomfortable silence, only increasing Penny’s concerns. Out of sheer curiosity, Penny glanced up at the quiet blondie, only to spot his blue eyes locked onto the raven's face, that same mysterious look plastered on her face.
Their gaze held for a moment, a silent exchange of emotions passing between them. Penny could see the turmoil in Johnny's eyes, the struggle to find the right words, and it mirrored her own internal battle. The weight of the unspoken words grew heavier, suffocating the air around them.
"What is it?" Penny croaked, her voice barely audible, her eyes quickly returning to the wood floor beneath her feet. Every fiber of her being trembled with anticipation, fearing what Johnny was about to reveal.
"Well…" Johnny began, his voice heavy with a mixture of sadness and resignation. But he cut himself short, letting out a deep, despairing sigh that made the ravenhead's heart throb painfully under her ribs. This couldn't be good. The silence that followed felt suffocating, amplifying her anxiety.
“It’s just that, we’ve been together for a ass long time, you know? And it’s been great. Really. Like, being with you has been the highlight of my shitty excuse for a life, but…” Johnny sighed again.
Penny anxiously watched Johnny, hoping for a sign of a misunderstanding. But his expression revealed the truth, leaving her heart pounding as his words lingered.
"...but?" Penny pushed on quietly, her voice barely a whisper. Penny felt a sinking feeling as Johnny displayed uncharacteristic behavior and weariness. She hesitated to hear his words, anticipating a difficult conversation. Time passed as her mind raced to comprehend the situation. She wasn't stupid. She knew that relationships could be complicated, that people grew apart. But she never thought it would happen to them. They were supposed to be different, special.
Love fading, shivers down her spine, fear gripping her heart, facing the harsh reality of separation. The future that once seemed so certain now appeared uncertain and terrifying.
Her hands trembled as she clutched them together, seeking solace from the suffocating weight of Johnny's impending words. She braced herself, knowing that whatever he said next would change everything.
"But sometimes when we're together... it just feels like it's... I dunno... not enough," he confessed, his words hanging in the air like a heavy fog. Penny's heart sank further, her mind racing to comprehend what he meant. Wasn't their love supposed to be sufficient? Wasn't their connection strong enough?
"I want more," Johnny continued, his voice filled with a yearning that pierced through Penny's already wounded heart. "Ya know...?"
