When I woke up, I took a shower and got dressed. The nap was great, but I was going to be late if I didn’t get a move on. This thing didn’t start until eight. It was already six. The early dinner service was just starting in the dining room when I arrived. Usually, dinner was served in several stages. The early service fed the night shift and the third service fed the kitchen’s day shift when they got off. Other members of the pack could eat at whichever of the three services they wanted. Dinner was basic but plentiful. When I took a bite, I realized there was more to it than just being basic. That night’s selection of meat was tough, chewy, and no fun to eat, with a gravy that was too salty, and grilled cabbage on the side that was so bitter it made my lips hurt when I chewed it. Ma
