Chapter 1: The Night Everything Broke
The ballroom glittered like a dream. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, scattering golden light across the polished marble floors. The air carried the soft melody of a violin ensemble while wealthy guests in designer suits and elegant gowns mingled beneath banners that read Dane Enterprises -Ten Years of Excellence. Bianca Shane stood quietly near the edge of the hall, clutching the strap of her silver purse. Her simple navy blue dress looked almost plain compared to the extravagant outfits around her, but she didn’t care. Tonight wasn’t about fashion, tonight was about Carson. Her gaze drifted across the room until it landed on the man standing at the center of the crowd. Carson Dane, tall , striking, and impossibly confident, he commanded attention without even trying. His tailored black suit fit him perfectly, and the faint smile on his lips made several women nearby whisper among themselves but Carson didn’t notice them, at least he usually didn’t. Bianca’s lips curved slightly. Five years, that was how long she had loved him. Five years of believing in him when nobody else did. Five years of supporting him while he built Dane Enterprises from a struggling startup into one of the fastest growing companies in the city. She still remembered the nights when Carson had been too exhausted to eat, sitting in their tiny apartment surrounded by paperwork and financial reports. Back then, success had seemed like a distant dream but Bianca had believed in him, always. Her fingers tightened around the small velvet box hidden inside her purse. Tonight, she planned to tell him everything, the thought made her heart race. Carson had asked her to come to the anniversary gala tonight personally, maybe he had something important to say too, maybe.. “Bianca.” The familiar voice interrupted her thoughts. She turned just as Carson approached. Up close, he was even more breathtaking. His sharp jawline, dark eyes and calm confidence made it impossible for anyone to look away but the moment Bianca noticed the faint crease between his brows, her smile faltered. “Carson,” she said softly. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The music continued in the background while laughter echoed through the hall, but an invisible tension seemed to form between them. Carson glanced around briefly before lowering his voice. “We need to talk.” Something about the way he said it made Bianca’s stomach tighten, still, she nodded. “Of course.” He led her away from the crowd toward a quieter balcony overlooking the city. The cool night air brushed against Bianca’s skin as they stepped outside. From here, the skyline stretched endlessly, tall buildings glowing against the dark sky. Carson rested his hands on the balcony railing while Bianca waited. Her heart pounded louder with every passing second. Finally, Carson spoke. “Bianca..things have changed.” The words hit her like a warning. “What do you mean?” she asked carefully. Carson exhaled slowly, as if searching for the right words. “You know how important the company is right now,” he began. “We’re entering a crucial phase of expansion. Investors are watching every move I make.” as he said that Bianca frowned slightly. “I know that,” she said. “But what does that have to do with us?” Carson turned to face her. For a moment, she saw something unfamiliar in his eyes, distance or perhaps calculation. “The truth is” he said quietly, “my life is different now.” Bianca felt a chill crawl down her spine, “I don’t understand.” Before Carson could answer, the balcony doors suddenly opened and a woman stepped outside. She was breathtaking, tall, elegant, and dressed in a shimmering red gown that probably cost more than Bianca’s entire wardrobe. Her heels clicked softly against the marble floor as she approached. “Carson,” she said smoothly. Bianca immediately sensed something was wrong as Carson straightened slightly. “Bianca,” he said after a brief pause, “this is Victoria Lang.” The name sounded familiar then Bianca remembered. Victoria Lang, the daughter of one of the wealthiest investors in the country. Victoria smiled politely, though her gaze lingered on Bianca with faint curiosity. “Oh,” she said. “So this is Bianca.” The way she said Bianca’s name felt oddly dismissive yet Bianca forced a polite nod. “Nice to meet you.” Victoria’s lips curved faintly before she turned to Carson. “The board members are asking for you,” she said. “Your father is also looking for us.” Us? ..The word echoed sharply in Bianca’s mind. Carson hesitated then he looked back at Bianca and suddenly, everything felt wrong. “Bianca,” he said quietly, “what I was trying to tell you is …things are complicated now.” Her chest tightened, “Complicated how?” Carson’s expression hardened slightly, as though he had already made a decision long before tonight. “Victoria and I are going to be engaged.” The world seemed to stop. For a moment, Bianca thought she had heard him wrong. “What?” Victoria didn’t look surprised, she simply stood beside Carson, perfectly composed. Carson continued, his voice calm. “This partnership is important for Dane Enterprises. Her family is investing hundreds of millions into the company.” Bianca stared at him, her mind struggled to process the words. “So..that’s it?” she whispered. “Five years and you’re ending it because of money?” Carson’s jaw tightened. “It’s not that simple.” “But it is,” Bianca said, her voice trembling. Tears burned in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. “I stayed with you when you had nothing,” she continued. “When everyone said your company would fail, when you were drowning in debt.” Her chest rose sharply with emotion. “I believed in you.” Carson looked away. “And now that you’re successful…I’m suddenly not good enough?” Victoria shifted slightly, clearly uncomfortable with the confrontation. Carson’s voice turned colder. “This isn’t about worth, It’s about reality.” The words cut deeper than Bianca expected. She slowly reached into her purse and for a brief moment Carson looked confused then Bianca pulled out the small velvet box. The ring inside sparkled beneath the balcony lights. “I was going to propose to you tonight,” she said quietly. Carson froze while Victoria’s eyes widened. Bianca laughed softly, a broken, hollow sound. “Funny, isn’t it?” she whispered. She closed the box and placed it gently on the balcony railing. “Congratulations, Carson Dane.” Without another word, she turned and walked back into the ballroom. The music was still playing and people were still laughing but Bianca felt like the world had collapsed around her. Step by step, she moved toward the exit, she didn’t look back not even once because at that moment, Bianca Shane made a silent promise to herself. One day, Carson Dane would regret this night and when that day came, she would be long gone.
