Chapter 4

Tears filled Mia's eyes as she put on a hurt expression. "I shouldn't have said anything." Covering her mouth, she turned and ran. Daniel's face darkened immediately. "Did you have to be so cruel?" Throwing those words over his shoulder, he hurried after her. My phone vibrated. It was a message from my husband, Leo. Leo: Honey, I've finished everything with the Riverbend Pack. I'll be home tomorrow afternoon. I finally let out a sigh of relief. Once Daniel met Leo, he'd have no choice but to accept the truth. ***** The next morning, I had just opened my flower shop when my phone rang. It was Kimi's preschool teacher. Someone claiming to be Kimi's biological father had already picked him up. My heart nearly stopped. I rushed straight to the Dubois Pack. The moment I arrived, I saw Mia had locked my son inside the animal enclosure with her pet cat. Since he was a baby, Kimi had been severely allergic to cat fur. Even brief contact could trigger a life-threatening reaction. He was crying uncontrollably. His tiny face was flushed bright red, and angry hives had already spread across his neck. Mia ignored his terror. Instead, she kept trying to force the cat into his arms. "Don't be scared, Kimi. This kitty is my favorite baby. Give her a hug, okay? Don't cry so loudly. You'll scare her." Kimi shrank back in fear, raising his hands to protect himself. The black cat suddenly lashed out. Its sharp claws raked across his face, leaving several long, bleeding scratches. Kimi cried even harder. "You're frightening the kitty," Mia said softly. Yet her eyes were cold as she glared at him. "How dare you touch my son!" Blinded by rage, I charged forward. I was only a step away from reaching Kimi when Daniel suddenly appeared. He wrapped both arms around me from behind and dragged me backward. "Mia was only trying to help Kimi find a playmate." The corners of my eyes burned red with fury. I turned around and slapped Daniel across the face. "Kimi is allergic to cat fur. It could kill him!" I immediately tried to reach my son again. Daniel grabbed my wrist and refused to let go. Mia looked at me with wide, innocent eyes. "My kitty loves playing with children. I just thought Kimi would be joining the Dubois Pack soon. I wanted them to get used to each other first." As she spoke, the black cat hissed, bared its teeth, and clawed wildly at Kimi again. Fresh scratches appeared across his arms, neck, and face. Then she added, "Don't worry. My cat gets all her vaccinations. She's perfectly healthy. I sleep with her every night." Watching Kimi cry until he could barely breathe made my heart ache. I struggled desperately against Daniel's grip. Instead of letting go, he held me even tighter. "Boys can't be raised like this. He'll be the future Alpha of the Dubois Pack. He needs to be brave. He can't be afraid of a little cat." The next second, Kimi's eyes rolled back. He collapsed onto the ground. "He's going into anaphylactic shock!" I screamed so loudly my voice nearly broke. Only then did Daniel realize how serious it was. I tore myself free from his grasp, scooped Kimi into my arms, and ran toward the hospital as fast as I could. Daniel and Mia followed close behind. While Kimi was receiving emergency treatment, a doctor came out carrying a surgical consent form. "Could one of the child's parents please sign this?" Daniel immediately stepped forward. "I'm his father. I'll sign it." Just as he reached for the form, a deep, commanding voice sounded from behind him. "Since when did my son become yours?"
