CHAPTER 21Bannister had a list of investigative priorities for his second day back from LA. First was a surprise interview of Kevin Middleton, a microbiologist who worked in the most secure lab at the Centers for Disease Control. David Ash, the CDC’s Director of Security, had made arrangements for Bannister and Ramirez.
The FBI agents arrived at the CDC’s security center early and were given access to a briefing room. David Ash escorted Middleton to the room and left after introductions were made. Middleton was wearing khaki slacks, a blue polo shirt, and loafers. He had on glasses and an Atlanta Braves baseball cap. To try and put Middleton at ease, Bannister shook hands with him.
