Left for Dead

I knew that the rouge threat was nothing to be taken lightly. My brother’s hatred for them left no room for negotiation. Heading towards the barracks to gather the warriors I couldn’t help but wonder if a mate would ease the suffering his brother felt or if the pain and loss, he felt was too thick to penetrate. Approaching the barracks, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the sound of laughter and chaos from the younger warriors in training, yet to see battle. Their innocence had yet to be taken from them like so many of us. Walking into the room all laughter silenced as they looked at me with admiration and respect. Making eye contact with each other, I prepared to tell them about their orders for patrols tonight. “We have received intel that there is a potential for a rouge threat and as a precaution we will be resuming twenty-four-seven patrols of the borders. Additionally, Tyler, Simon, and Andre will be accompanying Sebastian and I on our forest patrol this evening. Prepare yourselves and report to the East Gate in one hour. Understood ?” Respectful confirmations of understanding from them is all I needed before leaving them. One mistake, one distraction and a life is lost. I never wanted anyone else I care about to have to learn this lesson the hard way. An hour later we were preparing to head out of the gates and into the forest there was only the five of us, but that should be more than enough for a simple patrol. The forest had been silent tonight so there really was no concern at the moment but to be safe the patrols would continue. Loud Howling was heard in the distance as I see Tyler and Simon race off towards the sound, I see the look in Sebastians eyes as he hands the reins to Caseus. I watch as his eyes turn the golden color with Safire blue right in the center of his pupils. Caseus dashes towards the howls with alpha speed. I shifted instantaneously as my feet met the ground I was sprinting. I’m fast but I could never keep up with an alpha as hard as I tried. Sebastian alone with rouges never ended in anything but c*****e. My job as his beta was to save him from himself sometimes. Sebastians wolf Caseus had been the cause of many lives lost and continued to spiral. Beginning with the death of mom and dad and all the years later in absence of his fated mate he will continue to decline. One day his wolf will consume him at this rate. The howling stopped, just as I could feel myself gaining on my warriors. Approaching I see a woman laying down on the ground crumbled in a ball. Her body coated in cuts and bruises, her face swollen and mangled. Caseus stood over her. Looking at my brother in horror I pushed myself in between them. Noticeably Sebastian was back, and his beast was back in the recess of his mind. Looking back to the woman and then to Simon and Tyler. “Bring the rouge to the infirmary she doesn’t leave your sight.” Nodding the warriors rush to follow their new orders, carrying the woman until I lose sight of them. Turning to my brother, I am at a loss for words. “What the f**k man, I know you hate them, but you almost killed her. Did you even get her name? Did you consider asking her why she was here? We don’t hurt women unless we are given no other choice, even I know that bro.” I look to the ground as his glare is intimidating, and with it comes the wave of dominance. Daring me to defy him as he spoke, his growl bringing me to my knees. Groaning in pain, I hear him demand I look at him and fighting this was useless. Making eye contact I submit. Through the pain, I can hear him speak. His words got clearer as the dominance in the air dissipates. “How could you think I would ever do that to a woman without cause? The woman has been attacked and despite the contrary belief that I am a monster, it wasn’t at my hands.” I listen closely to my brother as he orders to watch her and agree to interrogate the woman as soon as she is medically stable to do so. He was right, even as a potential threat my brother would not harm a woman without reason. Sebastian was a man of his word, if he says he was not at fault, then it was my job to find the missing pieces.
