Chapter One
August
Rain drops hitting the vent with a loud thud, sliding down the shiney glass. It had been raining all day since she left home. But now the pouring has increased in pace. Her eyes shifted from the falling of every raindrop on the expensive vent window to her right.
The tension was thick here. She could feel it in her throat, in her skin and every part of her sentiment.
As she looked to her right, she was met with a tanned complexion that matched perfectly with the short brunette eyes. Her dress was a baby pink with white stripes. Her hair was adorned with a pink ribbon loosely containing some part of her hair in a bun.
Her light brown eyes met with hers and smiled. No one would believe she was above 50 years old. Her wrinkles were almost nonexistent. The smoothness of her skin and the childish personality would betray anyone.
August smiled back, at least that was what she thought she did. Her face would barely stretch in a smile because her mind was lost in its own world. Ocean of thoughts whirled in her mind like the Bermuda Triangle.
Her breath came out shaky and the back of her hair rose at the thought of her new job.
As a maid.
Who would have thought?
She didn't have higher education to work in a corporate firm but she also didn't expect to be working as a maid in a rich house. The worst she imagined was working as a waitress in some cheap cafe.
August looked down on her dress. A simple baby blue knee touching dress that Caroline gifted her on her 17th birthday last year. This was the nicest and prettiest dress she had which would soon be taken off and replaced by a black and white maid dress.
Caroline.
She was the woman who sat beside her and who had been beside her since her first cognition. Caroline raised August as her own, although she was just a homeless child found on a starry night. Only 5 years old.
When Caroline found her, her condition wasn't so stable. She could barely utter what happened to her. All the police and Caroline found was her little body covered in black and blue bruises. However, her past remained a mystery as August remained mute about what happened to her.
Although it couldn't be said that her muteness was intentional. Something happened that wiped her memory off of her mind totally. Or maybe she just didn't remember because she was just a little child.
The car came to an abrupt stop. Suddenly, her thoughts were lost somewhere in her memories and she was confronted with the large black and brown gates in front of the car. Two guards came out of nowhere and opened the gates revealing a castle. Metaphorically it could be called a castle because the place was huge! It had a large garden on the front and in the middle situated the biggest house she had ever laid her eyes on.
The place was adorned with varieties of trees and plants and the house was vintage, but the modern version of vintage. Her eyes were stunned. If the world had a pictorial version it would be that house. It reeked of money and power.
They were welcomed inside by a younger looking maid who hurriedly ran off somewhere after greeting them. The interior design of the house was even more beautiful. The walls were painted in rich cream white colour with a tint of golden here and there. The curtains looked as if those were made of silk and made out of gold. Two pairs of staircases go on either side of the house and a grand dining hall situated in between. It'd probably take her hours to walk around.
A few minutes later, a lady named Martha arrived. She was not old but also not young. Around 40ish with curly light brown hair, and dark skin tone. Her dark brown eyes didn't mismatched her complexion. She looked beautiful at her age.
"Oh, you must be August! And you are Caroline, am I right?" She exclaimed.
"Yes, I'm Caroline and this is August. We talked over the phone about the new job..."
"Ah, yes, of course I remember. I had urgently called Miss Anderson for the employment of a maid. As you can see this house actually needs lots of attention which requires lots of maids," she said and chuckled. August didn't deny that. That wasn't a house that was a castle.
"How are you, my dear? How was your journey?" She asked August. But it took her a few seconds before she comprehended that Martha was talking to her.
"I-I'm okay, th-thank you."
Martha smiled softly and told them to follow her. It was already afternoon and none of the family members were at home yet. Rich families had a bizarre schedule according to August who had always believed that following a proper daily schedule is healthy for your mind and body.
They walked up the stairs into the abnormally long hallway. She swore they had crossed about 5 bedrooms and 2 study rooms there. After five minutes of walking, Martha finally told them to stop in front of a corridor which looked like a quarter for maids to live in. There were at least seven to eight rooms, all the doors were coloured in the similar tint- hazelish brown, and each door had a golden plate stuck to it containing their owners’ name.
August didn’t have one yet as she just arrived. Martha opened the door with her key and entered inside.
“Come on in, August, check out your room,” she said. August and Caroline both entered and confronted a medium sized room with a small bed on the side, a study table, bedside table and a closet. The room was simply painted in white colour and had an attached bathroom but to August it was grand. Although it was out of her comfort zone, and being a quiet-introvert girl she never found her peace anywhere outside her own room and house.
Caroline owned a house of her own, it was nothing grand but it was the best place for August.
However, she was glad and grateful for what she had, at least it was nothing like what she had imagined. It was a normal room with a normal bed and bathroom and it even looked clean! She walked towards the bed and put down her small purse on the bed. The bed was soft, softer than the one she had in her place. Caroline walked to the closet to put down her bag and necessary things in it.
“Caroline, please leave it, I will do it,” she insisted. But Caroline shook her head saying, “You should be resting now before you start your job, you had a long journey after all!”
“Oh, don’t worry about it, dear. August, you can rest for now and start from dinner time, everyone will be home by that time so you can get a few hours rest before you start!” Caroline smiled at it and insisted that August sleep for now.
August sighed, “Okay, I will rest for sometime. Please take care of yourself for me, Caroline,” she held Caroline’s hand as a tear dropped from her eye. They did not share a blood relation but their bond could not be broken even by a large storm. The room shattered with sorrow, both of them cried in silence but none of them spoke as they embraced each other. Martha felt pity for the young girl who had to work like that for her helplessness. She had seen many girls come and get out of the Knight house, only a few of them got to stay only because she continued to save them from the rage of their owners, especially the eldest heir of the Knight family.
However, after a few months of firing almost ten workers, the house was in grave need of maids because the Knights’ demands were high and they didn’t want a dirty house. Martha had hoped that August would be able to stay there and assist them in maintaining the house but she couldn’t help but feel pity for the girl. She looked barely over 18, this was not the time she would work at a house. But life was not the same for everyone.
August sniffed and let go of Caroline’s hand who rubbed her eyes softly to clear the blurry vision.
“I should go now, honey, look after yourself,” she looked at Ella, “Martha…please look after her for me,” Martha smiled softly and nodded her head.
Silently, Martha propelled her outside the room and down the corridor, leaving August alone in her new room. After they left, she looked around again, the room was decent for her.
She went to the bathroom and freshened up quickly, changing into a comfortable pair of clothes. August thought to sleep for sometime although she was really hungry, looking at the clock it was already 3 PM, the dinner would be served after a few hours and if she went down to eat she would not get enough time to sleep, so she drank a whole glass of water that was on her bedside and laid down on the bed, preparing herself mentally for a new life.
