A Marriage To Save My Life
|Casmira's POV|
"So, what do you do?" The guy sitting across from me asks, his eyes twinkling in that sleazy way that most men's do and I know I am already bored of this sham of a date.
"I'm a Junior Partner at Darby International." I tell him, sipping on my drink as I look around the bar, trying to find anything that seems more interesting than the douchebag I am on a date with.
He scoffs listening to my words and I give him a sharp stare, "You're joking." He utters out before sobering when he sees I am not smiling, "No way you are a Junior Partner. You're just 26. Someone's sleeping with her bosses, isn't she?"
My eyes widen at the words coming out of his mouth before I gather my emotions and give him a cold smirk, staring him dead in the eyes as I grasp my drink and throw it straight in his face—
SPLASH!
"No, Dev, I am not f*****g sleeping with my bosses. This is what happens when you actually work hard for your goals rather than getting the business handed over to you from your pedophile of a father." Saying that, I throw $1000 on the table in front of him, much more than tonight's bill combined, "Keep the damn change."
And then I am storming out of there and making my way home as I roll my eyes at what an asshole I went on a date with.
After I have settled into my pyjamas and taken a bath, I am sitting in the armchair of the study room in my town house, going through my emails and making a plan for tomorrow when suddenly an email pops up on my screen—
"Time to pay the debt you owe."
My eyes widen as I click on the link and shining on my screen is the logo I thought I would never see. A lion head surrounded by a serpent that is eating its own tail.
La Familia.
The organisation I owe my life to.
The organisation that the world knows is the most dangerous out there.
The organisation that grants every wish you ask from them but in return, they come and take a price of their choosing, no matter whether you can give it or not. If you refuse, they wipe out your existence.
And now, after ten years, they have finally come to collect the debt that I owe them.
My head is spinning as my eyes focus on the words on my screen:
"There's a town car waiting for you outside, get inside and do whatever is asked of you. If you don't...you know what will happen."
My heart races in my chest and my body feels heavy as I crane my neck and look outside the window behind me, and like mentioned on my screen, there's a black car waiting downstairs.
Knowing I have no option, no escape, I rush to get dressed in a pair of formal pants and a blouse—if I die, might as well go out in a stunning outfit—as I wear my heels on my way out and grab my phone and keys before making my way downstairs to the car.
Once I am inside the vehicle, there is a partition screen between me and the driver so I cannot see who is behind the wheel but thankfully, my anxiety doesn't get the chance to boil over before the car comes to a halt in front of an old building in the south side of the town.
The door opens and I step out, looking up and down the empty streets as I am directed inside all the while my heart keeps pounding inside my chest, leaving me unsure about what my fate will be.
What will La Familia ask of me? For the favour they did for me 10 years ago?
I was a fool to ever think that I would not be asked to repay my debt.
They always come calling.
They gave me 10 years of freedom, 10 years of peace.
And now...I have to pay them back for the life I currently have.
What will they ask of me? Loyalty? Money? My hacking skills? My bo—
"Mr. Rupert is waiting for you inside." The voice to my left says as we come to a stop outside a closed door and with that, my chauffeur leaves.
Gulping down my fear, I reach out and push the door open.
Might as well get through it.
Inside is a long conference room table, the room is dimly lit and the windows are blacked out windows like one would expect and sitting in the end of the table is a short, bald man, looking more like he belongs inside a library than a deadly organisation that grants people wishes only to demand something equally taxing in return as payment.
"Miss Young! Finally the time has arrived for you to repay what La Famlia did for you." He speaks in a jolly tone that does not belong to this situation.
I quirk my brow, not moving from my place by the door, my feet both in and out of the room as every fibre in me asks me to turn around and run.
"Don't even think about it." Mr. Rupert says with a grin on his face, as if knowing my thoughts, "take a seat."
I do as he says before he slides a folder towards me across the table.
"You have been selected to fulfil someone else's wish from La Familia." He announces and my heart thrums in my chest while I furrow my brows.
"What do you mean?" I question, opening the leather folder with shaking hands as a single paper present inside it makes my eyes widen—
MARRIAGE CONTRACT
"What? What is this?" I utter out, my voice shaking, my mind trying its hardest to comprehend this.
Mr. Rupert gives me a blank stare, "Someone wants a wife for a year, assuring that there is absolutely no harm involved for the chosen woman, but there were just certain specifications to the choice of the wife...certain qualities that this gentleman needed. Hence, your profile fits the bill perfectly."
He explains everything as if he is not asking me to marry a stranger. To pay a blood debt that I owe them.
And if I refuse, they will remove my existence from every single place on this planet.
"This...this can't be what La Familia is asking of me." I shake my head.
Mr. Rupert smirks, "And here I thought you would be relieved. The gentleman is offering a fairly large compensation and the promise of the most comfortable year you will ever spend in your entire life. If I were you, I would be above the moon thinking that I only have to pay La Familia such a small amount."
Well...when he says it like that...
No...this can't be real.
Conflicted by my own thoughts, I shake my head, furrowing my brows as I ask, "Who? Whom do I have to marry?"
And that is when a third voice breaks through the silence—
"Me."
Wait...
I know that voice.
I turn around and there he is...
Standing in all his glory—
Damien Everhart.
The man I have secretly loved my entire life.
The man who betrayed me in the worst way possible.
The man responsible for everything in my life going up in flames.
"You're going to marry me."
