Rife with local color and laugh-out-loud dialogue, SUBTEXT, A Nervous Novel, is a love letter to New York City in the 1990s and the irrepressible gay community.

The storyline follows a family of friends as they navigate a series of significant events set in The Big Apple. A bartender with a predilection for panic and Twenty-Year Scotch, a consummately shirtless soap opera lothario with silver-blue eyes and a Basset Hound named Frank, a Broadway starlet whose vocal chops, theatrical flops, and Clairol Nice'n Easy No. 6R Light Copper curly mops harness the power to heal sorrow-filled souls, a "va fongooling" Staten Island meatball merchandiser with a mishigas for malapropisms, and a muscle-ripped, motorcycle booted, sager-than-he-should-be leather daddy are among the novel's colorful characters.

When a terrifying hate crime results in a perilously dire outcome, each of the family members is forced to take tight hold of their dreams. Together they stumble upon the universal, gemstone discoveries that exist between the lines-the subtext of life, both hidden and heart-touching. The story's ultimate message delivers a riveting, personal narrative of hopes and desires, and the disappointments that must be overcome if one is to perceive all the beauty that life has to offer.

Chapter 1
Frank Angeletti was born in Madagascar and reared in Rangoon. No, that’s not right. Frank was raised in the jungle with the help of Baloo the Bear and Bagheera the Panther. No, that’s just a lie. Frank was born in Chicago and attended public school. After graduating from Loyola University, he relocated to New York City, where his creative prowess ignited. Says Angeletti, “I kissed the folks goodbye, got on a Trailways Bus and headed for the Big Apple because I wanted to be a Rockette. I had 87 dollars in my pocket and seven years of tap lessons.". He honed his writing skills at The Village Voice and short stories and essays penned by Frank appeared in The James White Review, Christopher Street Magazine, Utne Reader and Next Magazine. He designed non-profit advertising initiatives for Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), and financed his tenure in NYC with a series of odd jobs including Front Waiter at Gotham, Maitre’d at Cafe Un Deux Trois (entertaining Liza Minnelli, Meryl Streep, and Sting on a nightly basis) and Bartender at NYC’s notorious leather bar, The Eagle. At the advertising agencies Leo Burnett, Digitas and Element 79, Frank brought to fruition some of the most memorable and wildly successful Print Ads and Television Commercials for several high-end, luxury clients including Celebrity Cruises, W Hotels, Nestle Purina and Jaguar USA. Frank is a two-time CLIO Award nominee for his digital efforts on behalf of KitchenAid. In 2007, Time Out NY Magazine hailed HOMOVIZION, his digital magazine, as “Eye-blazing, ear-popping, crotch-pounding design" and listed Angeletti among 20 NYC Digital Artists to Keep Your Eyes On. In 2016, his charity-based art installment, A BROADWAY PRIMER, featured 22 reimagined visual conceptions of Broadway Posters and played an open-end run in Chicago. The artwork raised more than 5K dollars to benefit some of the nation’s leading AIDS organizations. Frank is a graduate of the New York Institute of Photography, and a member in good standing of Certified Professional Photographers (CPP). Presently, he works as an Editorial, Commercial and Lifestyle Photographer, and his efforts have graced the pages of The New York Times, The Advocate, Out Magazine, Bon Appétit and Food Network Magazine, among others. His book SUBTEXT, A Nervous Novel is a love letter to 1990s NYC and the irrepressible gay community of a former time. The story’s ultimate message delivers a riveting, personal narrative of hopes and dreams, and the disappointments that must be overcome if one is to perceive all the beauty that life has to offer. In his free time, Frank enjoys growing facial hair, playing the piano, and long walks with his Welsh Terrier, Helvetica (“Vettie").
